Not directly but lots of Irish in Qatar, lots of Irish people fly Qatar Airways via Doha onto Asia and Australia.

Also, potential for oil price to be affected.

Giant US airbase located in Qatar that is involved with attacks in the region.

While it's good to see a country with such a horrible and twisted regime being ostracised, it's pretty damn rich of Saudi fúckin' Arabia to be claiming moral high ground in any situation.

Nah. I'm interested in your viewpoint. You didn't give us anything to reply to. Anyone could read about Qatar on the net. Surely if you went to the effort of posing it on a forum you have an opinion.

    Was thinking the same.

As for the US, I'm not sure how happy they'll be give their presence there. Also, oil prices rising won't be too popular with them.

It's a bit worrying. Saudi were never going to qualify for Qatar anyway.

You'd have to be a pretty reprehensible place to be ostracised by the likes of Saudi Arabia.

Don't think Saudi's actions are much to do with a reprehensible place and appears more to do with Qatar not doing what it is told and not following direction in relation to Iran.

I guess the gas pipeline from Qatar through Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria and into Turkey that the US and Britain have been pushing for is out of the question now. No point in them continuing to support ISIS you would hope to cut off the muslim Shiite influence in the region.

I agree , the pipeline is probably been a dead duck since the russians landed to boost assad. The support for IS etc...is now a waste of time and money
The qatar rulers are now probably cheesed off they won't be selling the gas in europe via that pipeline and perhaps didn't want to give us the current strategy

also reckon trump in his recent visit saudi arabia gave them grief about IS and the new arms deal has unpublished T&Cs attached relating to IS and terror sponsorship

Trump campaigned on anti IS platform and it would be a great win if they were wiped out.
His ego would explode and his popularity rocket if he pulled that off

Well, it hasn't so far with slavery accusations so unless the Qataris get caught with a smoking gun, I'd seriously doubt it.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Saudi is much worse than Qatar when it comes to twisted reqimes! Qatar is mild up until the point you break the law.

Saudi Arabia accusing another country of sponsoring terrorism... must be the wrong flavour of terrorism, I suppose.
Or do you think they're worried because Qatar is spending more on sponsoring terrorism than them?

Either way, going to be an interesting world cup in 2022 :D

I'm sure that's true for Western workers who arrive with lots of money to spend but their abysmla Human Rights record speaks for itself. Migrant workers from South Asia are essentially treated as slaves and being worked to death building stadia for the 2022 World Cup. The decision to award that tournament to Qatar remains represhensible.

It's a shame so many Western expats choose to go and live in such an oppressive society, though I can certainly appreciate the chance for a luxurious lifestyle (behind closed doors) and low tax/tax free salaries are enticing.

90+% of Qatar imports come via Saudi, currently the land border is closed.

Etihad, Emirates & Flydubai will all cease flying to Qatar from UAE.

Qatar Airways cannot fly over Saudi & UAE airspace and will have to send all traffic via Iranian airspace.

Not surprised by this Qatar did not want to back Saudi Arabia policies against Iran.

Bull****. Trump and Allies in the Middle East are trying to put the stop to Iranian influence in the region. Iraq is already a Iranian puppet state. Syria is also.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,201 ✭✭✭Doltanian

The good news is Qatar is not a huge Oil producer, however it has enourmous gas reserves. Luckily Europe gets most of its gas from Russia. Expect the market to get spooked and Oil prices to surge. Another reason for stirring conflict. Every time you fill your petrol or diesel tank you are indirectly funding Islamic terrorism.

It's likely the flight paths will re-route via Iran and Turkey, so probably an extra hour, hour and a half flight time.

Bit of a pain but not a massive issue.

World cup and football decisions are supposed to be done independent of politics.
So Qatar's relationship with its neighbors would be irrelevant.

(Of course on a logistical level this certainly doesn't help)

    Government take: 85.22c/litre
Cost before tax & duty: 51.68c/litre
Retailer & distributor margin (est): 11c/litre

    No.

EU gas imports are very roughly 1/3 Russia , 1/3 Norway and 1/3 elsewhere.

    Extra-EU_imports_of_natural_gas%2C_shares_%28%25%29_of_main_trading_partners%2C_2016.png

Note: the UK is a nett importer of gas and will be getting more LNG from the US in future.

Also Japan and China have reported progress in recovering methane hydrates from the ocean floor. So Qatar may find a smaller market for it's gas.
