    Hi all,

I thought you might be interested in this:

For the first time on Irish radio Near FM present The History of Irish Marathon Running. Produced and presented by Dave Hooper, with additional narration by Jimmy Magee, this hour long documentary traces the history of marathon running in Ireland from its imperial beginnings in the early 20th century, to the golden days of John Treacy, Jerry Kiernan, The Hooper Bros, Neil Cusack and Catriona McKiernan right up to the Rio Olympic games. With contributions from all of the above and more.

Tune in on Tuesday May 30th at 6pm on Near FM

Near FM can be heard online at http://nearfm.ie/livestream/ or on the TuneIn app or alternatively if you live or commute around North Dublin you can find Near FM on 90.3 on your dial.

For anyone who cannot tune in on Tuesday at 6pm I am happy to follow this post with a link to the podcast for stream or download.

    Looking forward to this.

Afaik, Dave Hooper is a nephew of Dick Hooper, so I'd expect this to be pretty good. :)

Hi there. I'm afraid not very good for the last year and a half. Only able to do 30 mins real slow these days. Trying to rectify that this summer.

    Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Finally got to listen to it!!

    Very enjoyable.

Also very important that so many of the people who contributed where interviewed.

Don't wanna sound morbid or anything, but time eventually catches up with us all, and that documentary will be of an absolute nugget to future generations.

Fantastic! Really enjoyable listen, and great company during an evening 10 mile run. I'll remember this show over the coming weeks as the volume mounts up, and I begin to question what it's all for.

In terms of great performances, Fionnuala deserved a mention, given her 20th place Olympic finish in Rio (ahead of Paul Pollock's 32nd place), and Sonia's 8th place finish in London was a great result, but you can't fit everything into an hour-long radio show. The interviews with the greats were fantastic. Really enjoyed it.

A really enjoyable listen - I got a shiver up my spine when Treacy said "...and you'd be running along, chatting to people, and you'd do 26 miles in 2:42, and that was easy running"

As a Hanson devotee, I can't bring myself to comment on Pat Hooper's recipe for success.:)

As a non-Hanson devotee, I subscribe fully! I was even starting to feel guilty about not completing 20, 24 and 26 miles on consecutive days, when I realized that I'm not chasing a 2:12 marathon, and relaxed a little.

While I suspect that these legends wouldn't agree with the current-day over-reliance on GPS watches, I wish they had those types of records of their training cycles, so we could look back on their data and see what's required to make champions.

Would be very interesting all right. Great article on LetsRun that has a month of Sonia's training before she won both World XC races in 1998: http://www.letsrun.com/news/2015/05/sonia-osullivan-shares-her-training-log-with-letsrun-com-how-did-the-villanova-grad-win-the-world-cross-country-title-twice-in-2008/

They probably have it written down in notebooks I'd say! I bet they have records somewhere.
