Not the best photo, I've never seen this insect before. It's was a bit bigger than an inch long, incredibly loud buzz of them, what appears to be a pretty gnarly stinger and pretty aggressive. Any ideas?

I can't see the markings but the shape suggests a Wood Wasp.
