Sports or Hairdressers car?

Would you classify an Audi TT 350BHP with a 0-100KPH of 4.8 seconds a sports car or is it a sports coupe?

Can a sports coupe be a sports car?

I'd like not to bias the question with my opinion.

    Then that's all that matters.

Is it pink and does it advertise a Salon?

If the answer to this is yes, then it may just be a hairdressers car.

TiTs, that's what you're thinking, just sayin.

With acceleration like that, it's sporty but not fast IMO.

Sub five seconds to 60 isn't fast these days? That's gonna be well ahead of the vast majority of cars on the road. That's a gee hair slower than a 911 Carrera and a second odd faster than a Focus ST and nearly a second faster than a Civic Type R. That's not fast? Eh what?

Not as far as I'd be concerned, I don't drive a fast car (not much use for it) but have my own set of standards.

Not trying to bend anyone out of shape but for me it would have to be pretty special to be 'fast'.

    0-60 sub 3 = fast.

Is that not super sports car territory? Is a Porsche 911 not fast?

I know this is semantics, and everyone has their own opinion.

But honestly, calling a TT a sports car isn't right, is it? Sports cars are fast, evil beasts that eat the planet, a name that makes you imagine Porsches, TVRs, and other crazy insane cars, not an Audi TT.

Yes, it's a lovely little car. hint.

Nothing against the MX 5 (a cracking car) but it's not the first car you think of when you hear the term 'sports car' is it? Be honest now ;)

Maybe it's me but these are cars you buy when you want a sports car but either can't live with one or can't afford one.

Stopping now as it's off topic, OP asked for opinion and gave mine.

Probably but was asked and gave my opinion, that's what I think when I see a TT, MX, MR2 (old ones were nice) etc.
The Supra, M3 would be cars I'd see regularly and think of as 'sports' my tuppence.

Clearly an Audi TT is a woman's car so definitely doesn't come under the sports category or any variation thereof.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I think the reason people see the audis as lesser sports cars is because of all the aids and the cars balance, they're great tools for going fast but don't require as much input or skill by the driver.

Something like an MX5 is just a sports car, it's not much good at anything else, audis are often great all rounders. They're a way to dip your toe into sports cars without having it bitten off.

The four seater M3? Sports saloon yes, sports car, especially by what seems to be your definition, no. And few of the M3's since the first one would beat a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds. The first one the E30(and the most valuable of them) got to 60 in just barely under 7 seconds. "Not fast" by your definition. The Audi would murder it(though I'd far prefer the E30). There are a shedload of Ferrari models, "pure" sportscars, that the Audi would murder.

This, it's down to perception really, some cars you look at and go wow, others you just see someone who's nipped out in the wife's car. Wrongly most of the time I'm sure, but that's how it is.
I'm sure the op doesn't want to spend his days explaining to people their misconcetions and would rather just

Though to be fair you could say that of the majority of modern cars. I can't think of one that doesn't feature driver's aids and a few of them.

I don't think they are ever fully off in the audis though. The likes of the GT86 and MX5 off means off, in the audis it's sort of off until it thinks you've had enough and turns itself back on again.

Not that most people would ever really need to turn off traction control outside of a track setting but on track the audis TC can really interfere, which makes them a poor choice for a purest.

They vere to much towards safety too, I don't think it's much good at lift off oversteer like the hot hatches, loads of understeer which is annoying on a track rather than rewarding.

I know, people don't need that and most will never drive it on a track or anywhere near it's limits but it all goes against the reputation of the car as a sports car.

    It's an Audi TT.

If I asked someone what kind of car they drive and they told me a Sports car, I'd immediately switch off and roll my eyes to heaven without rolling my eyes. People who own/drive fast cars don't call them sports cars. People who nothing about cars call fast cars/coupes 'sports cars' as they're clueless.

    Sooo....

I asked the local audi dealer about lead times etc. for a 181 audi TT. Cue them saying, shur, take one away for the weekend. I bought it rather than return it.

It's the 2l 230 BHP auto* version and not the TTS, but it's significantly sportier than my previous non slouch car.

It was a demo, spec'd up for just over €60k, registered 1st March, 2017 - purchased for €49k straight (no trade in).

Is it a sports car, I dunno. It's the best/most fun car I've driven by a country mile.

I read a review recently saying that the MK3 TT is a far better performer than the MK 1 version which was better known for its aesthetics. Maybe that's where the hairdresser preconceptions are.

    * unless you're a rally driver, I think these cars perform better as autos.

I had a first Gen TT but with the quattro (mostly FWD), the turbo and the small 4 cylinder engine and the drivers aids it was a bit soulless to me. Would I still call it a sports car? Sure why not. I now have a RWD mid engined Porsche with a very loud flat 6 engine :D

You can, I have done (wouldn't recommend it as it's a fairly short lived and usually painful experience. Bikes aren't too slow compared to a jet either,
BUT You can't stoppie a jet though.;)

Yes it is a motors forum; my comment were made in relation to 'fast' cars, as stated previously I'm not trying to get on the wrong side of anyone just pointing out that, for me, a 'fast' car would be something special, not something you'd see parked outside the local hairdresser. :p
