EDIT - €2.87 with paypal conversion rates.

I know of Adaway and other adblocking apps that you can get for free on Android, but most of them require root, or else they are not particularly effective.

Adguard is more than a blocker of ads for phones and tablets, it is also a web filter.
It works on Android and blocks ads from all applications (browsers, games, etc..)
This app does not require your device to be rooted , this application will be able to intercept advertising on the fly without any intervention on your part.

If you pay in Russian rubles, Paypal will do the conversion automatically which brings the price down to €2.72. (€2.87 using paypal conversion)
Please note that the code is already in the link, no need to enter it again
(for those who want it, the code already registered is "AWARENESS_2017") I preferred to leave it out because if you try to enter it a second time, it increases the price.

LINK choose Lifetime licence and either "Android" or "Premium" (Premium price is €5.07)
    https://m.adguard.com/en/purchase.html?currencyId=1&promoCode=AWARENESS_2017#1/36500/MOBILE

Here are some Frequently Asked Questions.

How does it work ? Need to be rooted?
Adguard will create a VPN server on the phone that will redirect all connections from your device to the Adguard application. This VPN is local only (as it is just for the application), and contrary to some, it does not provide any protection for anonymity and the connections do not pass through a server In Russia. The simple purpose of this local or "virtual" VPN is to block ads on the fly and the most important without needing to have a rooted device!
There are other techniques to achieve this, but the VPN technology is in my opinion the most successful.

How is it downloaded and installed?
The application you find on the Play Store is not the correct one. Google make their money through advertising, i doubt that they will ever allow the correct full version.
It must be installed directly from their site via this link:
    https://m.adguard.com/en/install.html

    How is it configured?
By default, you must first activate the protection, it is better to reboot the phone.
Then go to the "Settings" and then "HTTPS Filter". Click on "Filter HTTPS connections" and follow the steps. It should ask you to create a code on your device,  Scroll down a little and check "Do not filter websites with VE certificates" so that Adguard does not scan any banking apps that you have on your device.

What is Adguard based on to block ads?
On lists and it's good, we'll check that everything is in place. Go to "Settings" and then "Ad Blocker". Be sure to check only these lists:
    - English Filter
    - Spyware Filter
    - Social Media Filter (if desired)
    - Mobile Ads Filter
Reboot Adguard to make them effective.

Firefox displays a message about security, what can I do?
Follow all the steps just above. A final step is necessary for you. Stay on "Settings" then "HTTPS Filter", go all the way down and click on "Install the certificate in the Firefox browser". Follow the steps and you Firefox without ads!

I still have ads, have I missed something?
No, the blocker is not perfect and it is based on a database to detect the ads. I would say that its efficiency is between 90-95%.

    And for Youtube then?
Again, this is far from perfect ... However, a trick exists to reduce the number of ads, have shorter ads and no ads in the course of video. To activate the option, go to "Settings" then "Advanced", then "Low level settings" and finally check "pref.root.clear.youtube". Revive Adguard to make it now effective. (On paper, you would have to be root for it to work but I still noticed a clear improvement simply by checking this box).

What happens if I change my phone?
By purchasing a license, you will have the possibility to create your customer space. It is via the customer space that you will "deactivate" the license of your old device and will allow you a new activation!

Adguard Premium is normally €22.45 per year, and Adguard Android is normally €8.95 per year.

I use it on the TV box

I don't use it on the fone, sometimes it affects online apps.

I downloaded twice, once for the phone & one for a tablet. Both say "Your license is valid until the end of time " :D

It's really easy to just switch on or off especially if you swipe down from the notification bar. I have been using it for a while hence 55,000 ads blocked :)

Breaking HTTPS on every connection you make.

Do I trust a sysadmin at a company with ?5000 worth of hardware to do transparent proxying? Yes. Do I trust some russian ?2 app to do it? Nah.

Doing this gives the developer access to anything you do, including banking, google traffic, etc.

245 pages on Xda & people are still using it with no problems.
    Good online reviews too.

You may not have selected lifetime license. Maybe email them and mention that you may have made a mistake? Or purchase it again for lifetime.

@ED E, if paranoia is rampant, then maybe you should give the internet a miss.
Antivirus software has access to everything for years, if it didn't, it couldn't function properly.
Imho Facebook/instagram are the ones to be worried about.
As mentioned above by Discodog, it has nearly 250 pages on XDA, where it has been dissected and examined by many coders.
It is safe, and is well worth getting, as it protects you. There is an irony there..

I am also unsure why you said Russian as though it was a negative thing. I am pretty sure that it is the Americans who have a worrying trend of spying on our browsing history and details.

Anyway, here is the XDA thread for anyone that would like it.

    The same for me.

Yes, unfortunately it seems that the original offer has expired, but €5.48 for a lifetime license still looks okay to me.

I think it is still an 'offer', just not one as good as the original.

i am only using it a few days and have 52000 ads blocked

does that mean it has 52k ads in its data base that it blocks or it has 52k blocked for me.

seems a hell of an amount!

Every time I check it it says protection is disabled. Is there a way to keep it enabled all the time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

Yep, it is a small bug apparently, on some devices, email them from within the app when it happens and i think they will send you a patch for your device.

Same happened to me on my moto g, and i read these threads:

    https://forum.adguard.com/index.php?threads/adguard-enable-doesnt-survive-lock-with-wifi-off.5875/

    https://forum.adguard.com/index.php?threads/okay-im-stumped-cannot-enable-protection.8368/

They sent me a patch on Saturday night (I emailed them on Friday)

Ordered it this evening anyway. Still good value if it turns out to be as good as I'm reading :)

Not the same. I have used that and Adaway and AdBl0ck.
This normally sells for a lot higher. It is good and it is not just a browser filter, it blocks all the cr*p that you do not want, on most things. In-app advertising, in-app spying, in-app malware etc..
As well as the junk inside web pages.

(I realise that i am promoting this a lot in this thread, but i think it is worth it, definitely worth getting for the price now,  and you can watch XDA thread if you are worried about any changes).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Pity I missed this, I'd been meaning to get it after seeing it recommended on XDA before.

Is 349 RUB the regular price or still a discounted price? I was thinking to get it for my mam and dad too as a lot of ads can be deceptive and they might think they have to download or click something so want to avoid anything like that.

Can you promise to report back here if you ever hear of anything unscrupulous about the app being reported on XDA? :D

349 rubles is still a quite heavily discounted price for lifetime license, it is just not the original offer.(Original price in OP)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Ok cool, think I'll go for it so!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

    Anyone using it on PC?

If the ads are blocked, does that mean all the annoying popups are gone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

Another question both for Android & PC: Some sites detect if you are using an adblocker and wont let you proceed unless you disable it. So how does that work with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,994 ✭✭✭✭Discodog

I haven't used it on the PC. I use the uBlock Chrome extension that works very well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Using Ublock on Chrome here too, was recommended by someone else on boards and is working well. No point to pay extra as Ublock is free, so just need something for Android :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

I use uBlock as well, but accidentally clicked premium  so i have this for pc now too..
uBlock is just as good and free. Yes, it is detected on some sites, not all, so maybe they use different detection methods.
The main reason (same as above) that i got this, is for Android. I did not mean to click premium.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

Even with ublock or AdBlock Plus etc, some sites will detect the ad blocker and will ask you to disable it.

My question is does adguard work differently?

On PC I use Opera as well which comes built in with a very good ad blocker but the sites dectet that as well.

Oh and Opera comes with a free built in VPN. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Wow, I see if you change the currency to EUR, it's ?22 something for the same product, so I guess ?5 odd is pretty good for lifetime if that's the regular price? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

Yep, €22+ is the asking price here and the rest of the World (it used to work on aliexpress too, but now just a few sites.)
The Russian price is promotion though, i think they are celebrating their 5th birthday.
So it will go back up in rubles too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Just tried to buy and seems I can't do it via paypal, it's returning an error and saying return to the merchant and choose another way to pay:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

So I got a license for 4 devices. I couldn't pay via paypal so used my card. It's showing as around ?18, but that might jump to about ?20 after fees?

Seems it's the one license key for each device I'll use it on.

Set it up but is there any way to hide the notifications? I like to keep my android clutter free and I've now a:

    VPN is activated by adguard

    and also

    Adguard Filtering all internet connections

in the drop down menu, which is almost more annoying than ads :D

EDIT: Are these stats being made up? I've literally just installed it and not really used any aps at all and it's telling me it's blocked 164 ads?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

They have been accused before of having crazily high stats blocking, but the number actually comes from the amount of snooping/adverts that are taking advantage of your browsing. It is all documentd much better than i can say it, in their forums linked above. You can get a breakdown of everything that it has actually blocked.
Many of your intrusions are probably down to everyday apps/games that you have previously installed and given permission to.
In Android Marshmallow at least, you can block all notifications per-app. Go to Settings -> Sound & Notifications -> App Notifications, choose the app, and then select "Block All". This works great for apps like Adguard which seem to require a persistent notification.
From here (I did not look further, and may have got a more detailed answer if i did)
    https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/86506/how-to-hide-ongoing-persistent-notifications-on-lollipop-lockscreen

Very suspicious of this. Within a few hours its shown 531 ads blocked. Within seconds of installing it had blocked 3 ads?? I did have a browser window minimised at the time but would be surprised if ads are being blocked when the browser is not in use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

While it is called adguard, it is actually a web filter.
What you and i perceive to be ads is only about 1/4 of what actually are. They have addressed this in their forums many times.
It is somewhat explained here, but you do need to go into their forums a little bit more to get the full picture.

Googled for about 20 minutes trying to remove the notification bar for the VPN and it doesn't seem possible ;( It's an android thing apparantly, not adguard, but the fact adguard uses VPN means it is always displaying :(

I am not sure what you are seeing, i am using a moto G, have a Xiaomi redmi note 2 also running it, but i do not see those notifications. Is it a setting? (Xiaomi not really reliable as it is not mine and i only saw it twice since installation).

Re: Whatsapp, go to social media settings.
It may be a bit over protective for some, but it allows you to turn off those settings.

Bought it. Doesn't seem to block YouTube ads. That's one of the reasons I bought it. Everytime my daughter is on YouTube I end with a few new apps installed.

I have a feeling this might be related to this app, I'm having issues that when I play back audio, it goes silent after a few seconds. If I close the app playing the audio (whether it be music or a what's app message), then it plays again but will stop again after a few seconds. Very annoying and not sure what's causing it ;(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

It sounds similar to this - https://forum.adguard.com/index.php?threads/espn-radio-stops-playing.19608/
I used that forum for an issue i had on an older phone (android 4.4) and they were quick to reply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,847 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I don't know really. It's happening to me in What's app voice messages and in VLC music player. It just randomly goes quiet after a few seconds, but sometimes it plays the whole thing and there's no issues at all.

Also, adguard doesn't appear to be running and it says protection disabled when I open it as and the VPN thing isn't there either. Would there be anything else I should check associated that might be blocking it I wonder?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,211 ✭✭✭✭Suckit

Uninstall it completely, and try reinstalling it? Also, while uninstalled check if you have the same issue before reinstalling it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭EGriff

Just got this for a fiver so the offer is still semi going. Thanks OP. The adds on mobile sites are have gone to the dogs lately, those ones you have to scroll through are particularly annoying.

It should still be 174 Rubles (€2.69) for a lifetime licence. I just checked it there - https://m.adguard.com/en/purchase.html?currencyId=1&promoCode=RETAILMENOTCOUPON#1/36500/MOBILE
