Car warranties

Just bought a 2013 Ford Galaxy. Collecting it on Monday as the dealer is getting it nct'd before i take delivery.

My question is this? Should i expect a warranty of more than 3 months for a car worth €20k?

    I'd bloody well hope so!

Are you buying it from a Ford dealer?

It will be for engine and gearbox only most likely but I would suggest getting it looked over independently anyway especially at that money

The time to ask that question was before buying.

Haven't signed the paperwork to collect yet. Only put down a €100 deposit

Buying it from a Toyota main dealer

A Toyota main dealer, I can still walk away if not happy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Toyota main dealer should be giving you Toyota Dealer Cover, which is a 12 month bumper to bumper warranty that can be used in any dealer. Insist that you get that as opposed to a dealer warranty. There is usually a booklet you have to sign. They may try and fob you off as the warranty costs them a few quid but it's worth it's weight in gold, don't buy it without this warranty.

Car has to be less than 8 years old and under 150 kkm, mileage on warranty is unlimited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Would that cover still apply to a non franchise car?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yes. They can do a 2 year version for toyotas, but other brands get 1 year. Rovers and MGs used to be excluded back in the day.

There's a years breakdown assist included too.

    UPDATE

Got a call while at work today, on the same day I applied for finance on the Galaxy I also applied for a Nissan Qashqai with a main Nissan dealer.

After hearing nothing within 48 hours I presumed it was declined.

Turns out it was actually approved.

it's a 2014 (141) reg, full main dealer only service history and 80,000 kms

Repayments are cheaper than the galaxy
    Tax is cheaper
car is newer by 1 year
    comes with 1 year's warranty.

I haven't handed over my Focus or the part cash payment for the Galaxy yet. (so I assume the deal isn't done?)

    Seriously considering taking the Nissan.

Nissan is finance in my own name, Galaxy jointly me and the O/H.

The Nissan isn't nearly as big inside as the Galaxy. I'm sure you know that.

Yeah, I've driven both, as someone familiar with that whole area which would you go for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    Depend what I needed tbh.
Is it herself that'll be driving it?

The Qashqai will do the "I'm a yummy mummy, look at my jeep" thing where the Galaxy won't.

If you wanted less space, then the likes of an S Max would be cheaper than a Galaxy, or something even smaller like a Verso/Zafira would be comparable to the Qashqai in terms of interior space.

I'll be the only driver of it, as the boss woman doesn't drive, she tried and gave up. I've 4 kids all in hence I need a 7 seater.

The Nissan dealer is giving me €5500 for the focus with no cash deposit.

The Toyota dealer is giving €3750 plus wants €1000 cash.

That Focus cost me €8k 17 months ago.

Qashqai is €3k cheaper than the Galaxy with less mileage and 1 year newer.

My insurance on the galaxy is up €245, on the qashqai a refund of €150.

Get the Galaxy if you have 4 kids.

Or something like an Alhambra/Sharan or even an S Max

2 litre diesel Auto? My reading of them is they don't have much going against them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭bmwguy

If it's for carrying kids and their gear then definitely the galaxy. By a mile. Its purpose built for it.
Won't be much space for gear left in the Nissan.

1 of the kids doesn't live with me(previous relationships) the other 3 do, but having all 4 and their luggage does happen.

It's like squeezing a whale into a bloody sardine can, impossible.

Any advice on the Galaxy? As she's an automatic gearbox with €570 tax.

Strange that a certain Cork Toyota dealer has 4 automatic galaxy's 2013. All €20k

That's the same place I'm supposed to get it.

What do you make of that dealer?

They were Fiat dealers for ages and always had a good rep as far as I know.

Maybe they sold a few ProAce passenger models to a charity or fleet or something, but it's odd to have so many near identical cars. I'd be hoping they're not long term ex rental. Mileage seems to low for that, but I'd be checking the owners name on the logbook.

So you'd recommend them? Yeah they were Fiat as long as I remember, warranty issues probably cleaned them out.

Would having 4 Galaxy's make you suspicious?

I asked for the lowest mileage example of the 4. That's 127,000 Kms.

    All are Dublin registered.

Look.i think you have answered it there in that post. Galaxy or similar. Qashqai is not similar. An aunt had 4 kids in 4 years my cousins and she had a galaxy the whole time they were small. Loved it. I drove it once but it was an older model. Autobox, that's surely a bonus? It's not a sporty driving machine it's a people carrier so i would only go auto.
Do you think the tax is expensive at 570?

The Mrs is saying space is the priority.

I drive trucks for a living and love the auto box, never owned a car with one.

Do the Galaxy and Qashqai have similar depreciation?

I think I'll be picking up the 131 by the looks of it.

€570 isn't the most I've ever paid, that honour went to my 1.8 Petrol Mondeo at €636.

Just making sure that the right decision is made with assistance from yourselves.

Most rental companies keep their fleet very up to date, and dispose of most of their cars once the season is over. They often keep a few automatics in various sizes all year round for a few years to cover the off-season.

It is quite possible that these 4 fall into that category. I might be completely wrong too, but to have 4 of these that are all the same all D reg, with the auto box is very unusual.

All purchased in the first week of March according to motortax.ie.

My focus was Ex rental in the U.K. Before being exported to Ireland in 2010

I'll be insisting on the warranty Colm has mentioned, if they do great, if they don't honour the warranty i might follow through with a similar threat like your friend's.

How long are they gone from Fiat?

The garage? about 3 or 4 years since kearys lost the Toyota franchise id say.

I didn't even notice that Kearys had lost that franchise, that tells you how much notice i take.

My first time in that dealership was in 1996, they were well established Fiat dealers at that time. would you know what they are like if a customer plays hard ball? Do they back down?

The older Fiat's (Punto's, Stilo's and MK1 Bravo's) were very troublesome from what i remember, it was probably costing them too much on warranty work to make it worth while, Toyota on the other hand..................

Kearys are doing well for themselves so.

Stilos were a pile of crap how many are left I bought 2 puntos new one in 98 other in 02 and both were back at least 10times with problems, bought a 04 avensis in 07 and no issues at all.

If they just bought these galaxy's at auction or from a rental company, I don't think a Toyota dealer cover warranty can be given. From what I remember the used car being sold has to have been traded in against a Toyota.

Never had a Toyota, only for the back of a Corolla verso is too small i'd have gone for one.

The Fiat's of that generation were poor i agree.

they were probably auction cars, not as much as a disc holder on the windscreen, all have been issued with new number plates with the dealer branding on the end of them.

is a 12 month basic engine and box warranty all i an hope for?

4 cars all the same year, price and same county registration is admittedly odd.

I asked the dealer straight out was it an ex rental car, he said no, it was used for airport transfers, Dublin - Cork etc.

They were traded in for 4 Toyota Verso's i was told.

It is currently sitting in an NCT centre awaiting a cancellation or no show to be tested i was told at 5pm.

Did they show you the name on the log book. Happy days if it wasn't a rental, plus your u can get the proper warranty if they were traded in against Toyotas.

I'll be asking to see the logbook tomorrow when I'm due to collect it. For now the car is spending the night in the car park of the local nct centre which is madness.
What is the warranty I should get so? The dealer is telling me 12 months.

It needs to be the proper Toyota dealer cover warranty. A Toyota Ireland backed warranty and not a garage warranty. There should be a booklet to fill out (at least there was back in the day when I sold them anyway)

    This
    https://www.toyota.ie/service-and-accessories/warranty-and-assistance/toyota-dealer-cover-warranty.json

The only way they couldn't give this warranty is if the car wasn't traded in against a Toyota, so if the story about the 4 new Versos is true then it shouldn't be a problem.

It doesn't matter that it's a Ford so?

I'll definitely be looking for that.

My O/H has the dealer tormented to tax the car for the year if he wants to secure the deal as the car being traded in was just taxed.

The owner of the company said 'we'll sort something'

I've been approved for finance on a 2015 galaxy as well but it has the 1.6 engine, i can't find any good reviews on it.

The applications were made on the same day but different garages.

The dealer cover warranty is black and white, where a garage warranty can often be vague, the Toyota one will work in all dealers, not just Grandons, in case ye have a falling out, need a second opinion, or they cease trading. On such a new car, you need all the protection you can get.
It doesn't matter that it's not a Toyota.

Off topic but I have to ask. Why did you buy a second one if the first one gave you so much grief?

I had a 1999 Bravo from new and never had any issues until I sold it in 05 but my mechanic always said the same about the puntos and he too could never understand some of his regulars having no end of trouble with them but still went out and bought another one!:D
