The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel follows Miriam ?Midge? Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she?s ever wanted. Sorry for digging up an old thread but watched the first two episodes of this last night and it's very enjoyable so far. Rachel Brosnahan is great in it.

Worth a look if you're looking for something to watch on amazon.

I just finished watching it yesterday. It's not perfect but I think it's the series I've must enjoyed watching in a while.

I'm on S01E03 and so far there's been at least 1 Coen Brothers reference in each episode:

E01: The elevator guy is the same elevator guy as in Inside Llewyn Davis
E02: The Barry Sisters are mentioned, or are part of the soundtrack (I can't remember which). They were also part of Maude Lebowski's record collection.
E03: The lawyer is the same actor who ran the Gaslight Cafe in Inside Llewyn Davis.

    Edit:
E04: Three singers in the Gaslight wearing Aran sweaters, just like in Inside Llewyn Davis.
E08: Somebody gets beaten up for the same reason that Llewyn Davis gets beaten up in Inside Llewyn Davis.

Given that they're all Llewyn Davis references bar one, I think the Barry Sisters could have been a coincidence. I wonder if I missed any references in episodes 2,5,6 & 7.

Listening to some podcast and they mentioned that Amazon were doing a series on Lenny Bruce. I had never heard about this and Goggled to see if it was out and this is what I came across for Lenny Bruce.

No idea why I never gave it a chance when it cam out considering all the awards it won.

The pilot is great and I think the rest of my Sunday will be watching Mrs. Maisel.

Got 5 episodes in today and I have to say what a Marvelous show it is.

One that really should have a wider audience.

Finished it tonight what a fabulous and really enjoyable series.

Rachel Brosnahan is really great in the lead role.

    its just seems extremely irritating

    What does?

I started watching it yesterday and finished it today, enjoyable overall. Felt it had a strong start and then kinda got meh for a few episodes and then picked back up for the last few episodes.

Looking forward to next season, interesting to see where it goes next.

I was a bit annoyed as after starting it i found the 2nd season wasnt out yet, i heard talk of Amazon picking it up for the 3rd season, so was under the impression the 2 seasons had already ran and it didnt do well ratings wise, which is usually why a streaming service picks up a show thats good.

But no worries, only a month or so to wait for two :)

Got an e-mail saying season 2 is available now. Looking forward to it, season 1 was brilliant.

I watched the first two episodes of season two and really enjoyed them.

Amazon sparing no expense with the sets and set pieces that's for sure.

    The Catskills episodes were fantastic.

Zachary Levi is a nice addition to the cast.

Good to see Zachary Levi getting decent roles again now, hes had a rough time since Chuck, which i always felt was undeserved.

I haven't watched this season yet, but ill devour it in a day or two over Christmas :D

So finally started this, episode 5 season 2, its decent so far.

    The
    wedding scene
in like the second or 3rd episode was so cringe, i had to turn it off and go to sleep and finish it the next day. How can someone from that time drop so many offensive lines without batting an eye? Took me right out of the show, i know its a comedy drama but at least show some accuracy to the times..

    And then in episode 5
    Lenny Bruce
dropping a star wars reference.. the shows set like 20 years before the first star wars movie is released

But eh, other than those instances, great show so far :D:pac:

4 episodes in and loving it Cary Elwes joining the cast is a great addition.

    Renewed for a 4th season.

Finished episode 5 of season 3 and it might be my favourite yet Lenny and Midge just having fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Finished the season tonight and I think it's been my favorite yet.

Alex Borstein deserves to start winning a few more awards for her performance in it.

I just love the whole style set pieces and costumes of the whole show.

Finished the 3rd season. I was on the fence during the first season; lots of laughs, but with some gratingly painful '50's stand-up American 'humour'/'humor', and some OTT performances. After a settling-in period though, got to love it. Season 2 was fantastic, and loved season 3. Really glad there's a fourth season on the way.
Rachel Brosnahan was excellent- plays the whirlwind chatterbox brilliantly. Great supporting cast as well. Beautifully shot. Just such a great show.

I’m watching season 3 episode 5 and the sound keeps going out of sync.

I’ve tried other stuff on Prime and Netflix and don’t the usual close the close, disconnect the headphones, etc but I go back to the episode and after a few minutes it is out of sync again

I can’t the thread for this show is only two pages. Is this because the show is excellent and there is nothing to complain about?

Very underrated show, which I think contributes to it flying under the radar a lot. On paper, it's not even a show that would normally appeal to me, but it soon becomes very endearing, despite some annoyances. Lots of great performances, especially the lead. Really looking forward to season 4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭Useless Lump

To be honest after posting I realised I never hear people discuss or see anything online other Brosnahan winning an award (which which seems to be why I thought it was more popular).

Just so funny. And more than just funny.

It's a great show, just so refreshingly different but in ways maybe why people haven't gotten on board at the same time.

Maybe if it wasn't for Rachaels awards it wouldn't have been kept afloat as long even so thankfully it has and looking forward to the new season might wait till it's all out think it's 2 a week.

New season (4) coming out 18th Feb on prime. The Sophie Lennon character played by Ozarks Jane Lynch was outstanding. Such a simple phrase “put that on your plate” was unbelievably funny when said on a stage set for a serious melodrama performance .

That was a great season and Lenny shone throughout and that clossing few minutes of the final episode now nicely set up for the final season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭cdgalwegian

2 episodes down in Season 4. It reminds of Mad Men in certain ways, viscerally with the colour palette, being the immediate one. Both are a biting satire of the American way, with its driving superficiality of image, especially social image and drive for achievement- where the benefits of this are supposed to outweigh the disadvantages. The characters in this just happen to be hilarious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,990 ✭✭✭cdgalwegian

Class series, though seems to be running out of steam story-wise now, so although delighted it has another series, not surprised this will be the last one. If it maintains the quality by the end, this will probably finish as one of the best comedy/drama series around, yet one most people have never heard of.

great cast, but its run out of steam and basing major plot points around an actual historical figure was always a messy distraction.

star turn from herself but i reckon no harm to put a cap on it at this stage tbh

Finished season 5. Been putting it off for ages, as I didn't want it to end. From the off I didn't particularly like the zipping forward and backwards to the different time periods throughout this season, but you could tell it was to tee up the finale, and didn't mind it after a short while. The season, though a different format from the previous ones, was just as charming and funny as they were. And the finale was Marvellous.

It’s an interesting one alright. I can only relate my own experience and maybe it’ll resonate with others.

On paper this looked like my kind of show. Any excuse for more Tony Shaloub on my TV is a good thing and I was really looking forward to seeing Alex Borstein branching out a bit. Once I started watching neither disappointed but I soon realised it wasn’t really my kind of show. I can’t really figure out why exactly. I did find Tony Shaloub’s character a bit too melodramatic but I think it was a load of very little things that put me off. I stuck with it til season 2 and somewhere in that season I kind of drifted away.

It wasn’t that it was a bad show. Far from it. It was very well executed but I also didn’t feel I liked it enough to come on here to discuss. Once I drifted away I also didn’t feel strongly enough about the show either to complain.

I may return to see how i fare with it as a rewatch, especially as all five seasons are in the can now. It may be one I pick up over a Christmas holiday or some extended period like that. We’ll see.

    I finished season 5 yesterday.

The series is absolutely wonderful and I would have loved for it have two or three more seasons but it was a great ending but an ending that was spoiled by the decision to have season 5 full of flash forwards. Showing how it would all turn out impacted on the drama and tension of what was unfolding for Midge and Susie behind the scenes.

And rather than showing the future the time should have been devoted to other things like Abe bonding with Esther, Rose’s matchmaking, etc. and it should have ended with the the look between Susie and Midge in the studio, there was no need for those final two scenes.

That said, it is a great series. I keep recommending but it falls on deaf ears.

I'm surprised it didn't much attention but maybe after superman launches it'll get more eyeballs. Seeing her in this, it's no wonder she got Lane!
