Any updates when the service goes live?

  • Administrators, Computer Games Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 32,532 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Mickeroo

Got a leaflet through the door advertising the service so I don't think it should be too much longer. They seem to be moving pretty fast with the rollout anyway.

Yeah will do when I get home after work. There wasn't much detail on it though, just an advertisement really.

Your best bet is to PM their reps on this site with your address and eircode and they will be able to tell you.

    Great idea, thanks.

Siro be even better, but I stopped and chatted with one of the workers for a few mins, he said it was Virgin Media. Do Siro have any work vans or anything?

Have only seen one Siro van knocking around infrequently. Was chatting to the guys in our estate (Pontoon Rd) and they said it was Siro that they were working on. Quite a few of them, down from Donegal / Derry, the Vans were all DL regs and Tohill was the contractor's name on them.

Their availability checker says available soon when I punch in Main Street. I think someone here said their reps were going door to door so will probably available by end of summer.

That availability checker came up with a host of green lights when I entered Pontoon Rd. in it about 3 wks ago. I notice that it has since been pulled from their site.

Actavo are making very good progress with the cabling. We should have installs in Q 4 this year. If that happens, it will put Eir & Siro to shame.

Actavo are doing very well, sure Eir cabinets in the town centre were only providing a 24mb service less than a year ago, and only a 100mb maximum now, it will be interesting to see which areas Siro will be available.

I think they screwed up my internet, they're working in our estate at the moment and I came home to a dead phone line yesterday :o

Might just be coincidence as the neighbour's is still working but still :pac:

There's more work. It appears going on both in Willow Grove and along the pontoon road.

Shame I'm due to have sky installed and the maximum speed they could promise me is 12 Mb per second :(

12Mb in the town? Doesn't sound right. Where you living?

Quite a few places around Castlebar have 12mb and under if you check the Eir coverage map.

Thats pretty shocking in this day and age. I do know a guy who lives not far out the Newport Road, closest exchange is at the Dunbeg estate but he is connected to the Islandeady exchange. Can only get 4meg down at the best of times.

If you're only just getting it installed you should still be within the cooling off period. Only issue is you'll be without internet until Virgin are up and running most likely.

When i was renting in St Patricks Av across from the hospital the house was roughly 20 metres from a supposedly live fibre cabinet but couldn't get a fibre connection.

There's a sort of jesuitical distinction that needs to be made here.

The NBP intervention isn't directly about the government making sure that every premises in the country has at least 30Mb/s; the intervention is about making sure that there are no areas in the country where it's not considered commercially feasible to provide high-speed broadband services.

Castlebar town isn't one of those areas. Much of the town can already avail of fibre to the home. Most of the rest of it can already get VDSL, and two operators are planning to launch fibre to the premises networks in the very near future.

Sure, there are a number of premises that can't currently get 30Mb/s, but given the scale of the project, DCCAE aren't going to be interested in a town that will soon have three competing fibre networks - and they'd almost certainly fall foul of state aid guidelines if they did.

Now, if there are entire areas of the town where all three operators make it clear that they have no interest in building next-generation networks, then there's a case to be made for adding those areas to the intervention.

Huh. You should be able to do better than 12M there. In any case, that area is on SIRO's roadmap, but hard to say when.

Have you a source for that info? They have barely 50% of the town cabled. Its a pretty tall order that they will have the rest of it cabled by then.

Thats what we were told originally a few days back over the phone but it seems they have changed since and cant guarantee a date or when they expect to be ready to go live. Guess we wont find out until we see the player in the jersey...or in this case the ad in the paper!

I'm sure it will be a phased launch, no point having 100's or 1000's waiting on the same launch date!

Are we sure that it's ftth at the top of my easte thers one of them green boxes that they use for fibre to the cabnit
