    Hi All,

Is there anyone on here living in Droim Liath that I could PM? Looking at houses in the area and wanted to ask a couple of questions.

I see there are plans for a SuperValu at Collins Lane along with a cafe. Plenty of houses going up in that part of town. Hopefully it goes ahead

Last week I got the train from Dublin to spend some hours in Tullamore exploring and shopping. My first time in the town. Well I was there many years ago when a family member was in the hospital. My first time to explore the town I guess

There is an excellent range of shops. I visited a few and specifically went to Guy Clothing as I have been following their Facebook page a lot. I only got a gift voucher to be used later but the staff were very, very welcoming. As I was entering a mother and her son were exiting and commented how nice the staff were.

I also visited Galvin For Men and the owner is a true gent. Quite a busy shop.

I walked Fiona´s way to use up some time. It is a superb amenity and I gave and received a salute & hello from all.

Afterwards I went to Jenny's Kitchen in the shopping centre for a full Irish breakfast and sorry but I was quite disappointed. It gets good reviews and many locals use it but I was unhappy. I gave it 2/5 on Tripadvisor. Maybe I got them on a bad day but I give 5/5 to almost everyone. Was not impressed with this place-.

Two pints in the bar in the Central Hotel from a friendly barman and a walk around the very pretty town park and I got the train back to Dublin

Very impressed with the shopping in Tullamore and the friendly people

Nice to hear you had a good time, agreed on Jenny's Kitchen for breakfast, if you every come back again I would suggest Flynns for breakfast

Hopefully they can get some type of similar replacement industry on the site at some stage. Even if there was a gap of a few months between the old and the new. At least there’s a bit of time to start looking and planning. Also the IDA need to start planning to build another park in town. It’s things like this that the Just Transition money should be spent on rather than greenways and new shiny footpaths.

Two more pubs in town have bitten the dust - "The Newtown Bar" and "Paddy & Bishops"….the latter closed suddenly only recently - having only re-opened in July last year.

I believe Paddy and Bishops is open again. There was a falling out that has been resolved.

Another takeaway joint (Mars Pizza) to open soon in the old Tormeys Butcher shop across from Bridge House.

Looks like the pizza place in the Old Post Office has closed down. Noticed it wasn’t open last week. The Small Town Pizza website just mentions Adare now and has dropped the Tullamore one.

Thats a shame it was a nice set up but just didn't seem to get the bums in seats

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 372 ✭✭brennarr

Yeah, such a pity it’s gone. Was nice to have some decent pozza in town.

Strange though the way they erased all mention of the Tullamore restaurant on their social media and website like it never existed.

I was honestly a bit disappointed with their pizza, it was OK but not outstanding. Very short time before they pulled the plug. It's going to difficult for anyone to make it successful in that location IMHO, the planning restrictions around signage there is a big problem

Visited the new aldi a few times.very quiet yet.wonder did they make a big error opening this second one with all the competition.time will tell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 985 ✭✭✭medoc

The advantage of the second Lidl was a better location than the first. That advantage isn’t there for the second Aldi. Why go to the new one when the old one on the bypass is much easier to get to. Hopefully they get to start work on the SuperValu early in the new year. At least that brings something new to the town.

Does anyone have any idea what is going into the new building beside the NCT?

`People who live in the town itself can walk to it (including my Mother), it's opened a week lads 🤣🤣

    Hello all.

We just purchased a house in Tullamore, hopefully will be moved in the next month or so.

So I'm looking for some insider knowledge!

Best pubs, cafes, restaurants, schools, playgrounds, activities and anything else of interest.

I grew up in Offaly, close to Ferbane so would have spent some time in my youth (20 years ago) out and about in Tullamore but not too familiar with it now.

    Appreciate any tips.

Best pubs in town - Eugene's, Digans, Brewery Tap, Fergie's, Harbour Bar and John Lees.

Food - Chanapa Thai, Lana, Browne's, Captain House, Old Warehouse, Brewery Tap (bar food) or Maunsells (they do a delicious carvery)

Coffee Shops - Foxy Bean, Flynns, Chocolate Brown or Quigleys.

The town park at the top of high street is a popular spot to go with small kids. Grand Canal greenway runs right through town and a great amenity for walking, cycling or running.

Plenty of activities to do in town - depending on your area of interest - plenty of clubs on facebook if you look.

Sorry, @brokenbad just noticed your reply today.

Thank you for all of that info, we're pretty well settled in. Very happy to have made the move and enjoying life around Tullamore.

I've been to a good few of the pubs for a pint. Highlights so far have been Eugene's, The Harbour Bar and Fergies.

The Old Warehouse is very good for food. Had a good evening with family in Captain House. Plenty more to try too.

We both have been out running on the Greenway, it's a great amenity. We've done a couple of Parkruns too.

I'd recommend the Farmers Market on Saturdays too, we picked up some very nice food there.

I even went to see Offaly beat Westmeath in OCP a couple of weekends ago. Sure what more could you ask for!

Open a while now, and still fairly quiet. Hearing a good bit of negative feedback about it.

One thing I've heard, is that you need to watch out for the use by dates on products. That a lot of stuff, seems to be lying around a while. I've only shopped the it once myself, so only going by what a few local people have mentioned.

Also heard, a lot of cars have been clamped there. I don't know all the details, but I know two people who were clamped, whilst in doing their shopping. Not sure what the rules are regarding parking there, but I do know a lot of people are turned off with the clamping stories.

Another negative aspect seems to be it's location. Kilbride street can be a bit of a nightmare especially at the weekends. This has gotten even worse, since the new Aldi opened. I've got caught there myself, a few times in the last few weeks. It would certainly turn me off going to Aldi when it's backed up with traffic. You seldom have that problem with the Lidl just down the road.

Struggling to find a decent barber, I won't say where but the 2 places I've been so far have been pretty poor. I'm wearing the most asymmetrical haircut I've ever had for the next few weeks.

    Any recommendations?

Really? So nobody is going to talk about last night in the town? Culture night by the sounds of things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭Eddie B

Probably because most people are happy enough to let them at it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,539 ✭✭✭Quitelife

it’s happening all over the country - towns and villages been destroyed by a protected section of Irish society . Politicians in the dail won’t allow the topic be mentioned and the judges are told the prisons are full , Tullamore , Tuam , Longford. Charleville, Ennis , Limerick .. the list is endless ..it’s getting worse though everywhere as numbers increase and garda numbers reduce outside of Dublin

A woman there this week extremely distressed after being clamped … said she was only in doing her shopping when it happened…very poor stock of meat on shelves.

Bespoke Barbers at the top of High Street - Muirt is a decent barber but don't let any of the young lads near your hair….

Heard rumours over the weekend that Browne's The Venue is closing……hopefully not true. Not good for Tullamore Town losing another business in recent months after Quigleys and House of Value on Patricks St.
