Couple of small niggles with the phone. First is you can't watch hd neflix on the phone itself. Doesn't have the drm licence. Second the Bluetooth won't connect to my sphero bb8 robot..
Otherwise happy enough with the phone. The onboard DAC for music is average so I purchased a dragonfly red and it's great.
    Thanks
    Mick

Just curious as to how you are aware of this Mick? :)

Very much liking the look of the Oneplus 5 now that my htc m8 has kicked the bucket. Just wondering if there is anyway to save a few quid on it before I go ahead to buy. Also anyone recommend a good case or general must have accessories for it??

    Thanks a lot!!

Well, there is no way to get actual money off the phone as they never launched the 10% discount here for students in Ireland!

However you can get 20 Euro off their official accessories (so basically a free case) if you use this link to buy the phone :)

If by macro you mean bokeh, swipe to the right in the camera app, tap your subject and the background should become the cool bokeh :)

Is there no standard macro mode,as in taking photos of close ups

nah, no macro mode as per say. There the second lens, which is the 'zoom' lens aka if you want clearer quality. but you can do that on any setting, be it manual, auto or bokeh by just press the x1 button, or sliding it to go further (and loose quality really). You could just stand really close to your object, the OP5 has a pretty good focal point and you can getpretty close to things without loosing focus, then use bokeh and that will give it a cool effect :)

2 essential things missing from the One Plus 5 OS I've discovered.

    1. No silence or do not disturb scheduler.
The slider on the left of the phone isn't an ideal replacement. You can forget to switch it off and miss calls easily and it's a pain in the ass to have to do it manually.

    2. No badge notifications on app icons.
Every android phone I've had have them.
They're extremely handy if you're not a fan of being spammed push notifications from the likes of Facebook.

Of course you can buy apps / launchers to replace the functionality but I don't like the idea of having to put 3rd party software in place of what should be on the phone in the first place.

One man's essential is another man's meh - I'd presume many people (like me) didn't even miss such features :) Still, maybe have a hunt through the OnePlus forums. There may be a thread or place to suggest improvements and, who knows, these may be implemented in the future.

I'm assuming it's the little "F" icon that pops up at the top when it's someone's birthday and such but not sure

Can't think of why OnePlus don't have these actually. They are handy.

I assume it's a little 1 etc on apps that you have a notification for.

I have them set on Nova Launcher.

I think android don't have them. Samsung and HTC have them built into their skin.

Just read that they're gonna be introduced into Oreo, along with notification previews from the home screen after long pressing the notification badge. Nifty!

I don't think I've ever had an Android phone that came with them.

The beauty of Android is you can install an app and change what you don't like. I use lawnchair, which is a modded pixel launcher which gives me these notification icons. I also have the full Google assistant by simply setting the phone to USA English and installing the Google home app. There's lots of little tweaks you can do with very little effort, even make the phone more like vanilla Android.

Know what they are now, and that's what I thought they were, but the name badge was a bit confusing :)

I've never had it on a single android phone and I've had at least 10+ phones in the last 7.5 years.

I guess it's just certain ones that do this.
I have an ipod touch that has these badges, and I think they look awful personally, but android should be about choice.
If they are something that can be brought in for personalisation, then I say let's do it :D

Interesting we've had it on every android phone in the family even a Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 running Android 4!

It's not baked into all implementations, although why it wouldn't be is lost on me. Nova + TeslaUnread mean not having to worry about it.

Only Samsungs that I had were an S II and S III that I don't think had that feature on them :)

You must have stuck with manufacturers that had this feature!

Did you try that LawnChair Launcher from above?

Thanks for that I was trying to use an app called Lawn chair on the play store thinking it was the same and for the life me I couldn't figure it out and couldn't see why people liked it!

I am now that I figured out the lawnchair app on Google play is something totally different! :pac:

That think in the store is an abandoned project, by the look of it!
I found that myself before and was wondering where the praise was coming from!!! :D

Probably asked all the time but does anyone have an idea when the 128 GB 8GB ram OP5 is back in stock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭clickhere

I had a problem with my one plus 5 last week, you could not see anything on the display. The phone looked like it was off, but the notification light was working. The phone would ring ok, and you could answer it by guessing where the ringer was. I got on to customer support and arranged to send it back. It was a 6 day turnaround from sending it off for repair and receiving it back. There was a problem with the motherboard, so I really impressed with the speed of service. Just taught i would let you know, if people are worried about the after sales service.

if you're feeling strong banggood have a pre-sale on these, 401 including air shipping. You can use the BG points then to buy covers, dash chager etc etc BUT customs could put over 100 on the phone and then there is also the wait. someone in a postroom said they can only check 1 in 10 packages so i'm going to give it a go :-)

I asked on OnePlus Live Chat yesterday but the rep couldn't provide me with any info.

I checked the website this morning and there is a 8 GB RAM/128 GB Storage version available to buy. It's the OnePlus 5 JCC+ limited edition (it's not to my taste unfortunately).
