As I came home this afternoon I found a small bird sitting on the path. About 2 inches high,body mostly gold/brown bit of white on brest area and bright yellow on part of wings. Around his beak bright red. Absolutely beautiful . Was unsure what to do as I thought maybe his mother might be around. But then thought maybe he had fallen out of a nest and couldn't fly. Tried to pick him up as I didn't want the cats to get him. After a few attempts he flew off. Why was he on the path and why not fly away sooner rather than run which he did the first couple of attempts to catch him. And please tell me what bird this is.thank you

A Goldfinch and it sounds like a classic case of concussion from flying in to something, like a window.
