Cultural norms for visiting in Ireland

    Hi,

My BF and I had a difference of opinion on a visit we made yesterday to a friend.

This is my BFs friend, he is recently married and has a <1 year old baby.

We visited, had a cup of tea, stayed for about 45 mins and then headed off. I was the one who said we should go. My BF said he thinks it was rude not to stay longer.

They mentioned were going to a public event in their town with the child, so I wanted to give them time to get there.

They invited us to go with them but I politely declined, reason being I wanted to get back and finish redecorating my bedroom.

The original invitation had been for an earlier time, and I believe this was so they wouldn't miss the event. We had to come later and I believe they only invited us to the event to be polite as they didn't want to rush us out.

What do you think? Was I rude to leave and not join them?

I did bring a gift for the little baby!

I'd say you were right. Nothing worse than a guest who overstays their welcome.

You made the right call IMO. You read the social cues correctly while your boyfriend didn't
