Heard rumors from a few people about an M&S Foodhall opening beside LIDL in omni. Anyone know if it's true? Would be great if it was!

Looks to be true going by the planning notices on the Swords Rd and on the hoardings next to Lidl.
I can see Tesco making an objection and the traffic there on a Saturday doesn't bode well for adding another supermarket!
Fingers crosssed it will become a reality.

What ever about Tesco objecting, the traffic into mainly and the outflow from the Omni is literally out of control at this stage. You cannot have one entrance in and out.

DCC should be not agreeing to anymore shops until it's sorted out and to be honest, I don't see how it will be sorted out.

Yes, according to Cllr Andrew Montague

They could put another entrance here

Would be very easy for them to run a road from Lidl, through the patch of land behind the Topaz/McDonalds - maybe make it a left turn only just to keep traffic flowing.

It's crazy how much they've added in there over the years while keeping a single route in or out.

I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put the exit of the underground car-park right onto an already busy roundabout?

I wonder if there also could have been a way for them to add an exit through the road between the centre and the Maxol (currently used for deliveries) back when they redeveloped the buildings that now house Boots & Deals etc

It is an absolute disaster, really is reaching the stage now where someone is going to get into a serious accident.

M&S is shooting up the building looks fairly big, I wonder if it is going to be two floors.

But they seriously need to sort out a second entrance and exit.

Here is the view from the back - surely there could be access that way.

AFAIK it is owned by a single family. So it is not as if it is run by a faceless American giant.

Not sure how much blame they should get for the way Tesco looks after its shop, but they've definitely made a bags of the place in many other ways - in particular the extension, which hasn't been full in the 10+ years it's been there.

They don't seem to like people relieving themselves on their land - only explanation for them having one (manky) set of toilets for the whole centre.

The omnipark.ie website has been down for at least a year at this stage. unbelievable. Management are a complete disaster.

Great for finding stuff that should have gone out ages ago. Bought a 2005 bottle of Jameson 18 there last year (in a damaged tube) for 88 quid. A new bottling is 130+ quid; a 2005 is closer to 300 and nobody really cares about the tube.

I've been hoping M&S would finally get to Swords but I suppose Omni is not too far away.
Still holding out hope that a big M&S (with clothes & home) will open in Swords eventually!

    From MKN site:

"Construction work will start in Spring 2017 on a new 1,320 m2 unit for Marks & Spencer supply food store. The store is due to open Christmas 2017."

With one road in & the usual insane Xmas traffic, should be a crazy opening ;)

I read somewhere it wouldn't be open till December which surprised me really.
Looking at the current progress it could be open by late August early September.

Don't want to turn this thread into a rant about how bad Omni management is at long-term thinking, but was in the upstairs bit last week and saw that they had planning permission up to turn the unit that used to house Menarys into a gym studio.

They don't seem to have any strategy for driving footfall up there - all of the tenants bar the wool shop are effectively appointment-led destinations (hairdresser, driving licence office, estate agents). Not to mention the fact that two of the units don't allow access on that floor.

It's the same way they seem happy to have a churn of cheap clothes shops in the main centre rather than try to think ahead and build a better balance of retailers. As long as rent is being paid, who cares?

Still no word on what's going in between the new M&S and Lidl in the smaller unit. I hope it won't be left vacant like a lot of the Omni already is :pac:

Fit for Less is the gym going in. They have the small gym in the old Total Fitness in Clare Hall too.

The same crowd behind Energie fitness (their very ugly website says they'll have a gym in Finglas soon too - on the North Road where all the car dealerships are).

It seems like €259 is the standard for a year's membership, so the Santry branch may struggle to compete with Ben Dunne (swimming pool, more studio space) & FlyeFit's new Drumcondra branch (much better opening hours, probably bigger studio too).

Isn't that on the first floor of the Omni itself? Not the small unit between Lidl and M&S?

Yeah apologies, was answering post a few back where someone said a gym is going in the old Menarys. Haven't a clue where its going. Their instagram has a floor plan, but no measurements, it doesn't look big anyway so could be right that its upstairs and not outside beside Dealz.

Noticed the hoarding has come down in the last few days. Shouldn’t be long now although the internal fit out doesn’t seem to have started yet.

Drove by the new building the other day - there's fencing & a path/kerbing installed to the side and while it's hard to know for sure it looks like it's there to stay (maybe being used as access for deliveries at most).

If that's the case it means the centre will still have a single entrance/exit, with every car forced through the roundabout outside Topaz. Can't understand why they would add to what is already a major bottle-neck, or why they're being allowed to do so by planners etc.

I’d say that side pathway would be used for deliveries/emergency access but yeah it’s really crazy leaving the entrance as is!

Hard to understand why M&S are opening in Santry, not a commentary on Santry or Ballymun just seems unusual.

Not at all unusual, no good option in north of Dublin. once you pass Clarion Quay. They'll draw people from a large catchment. Would imagine it will be very busy from the beginning.

Not really that hard to understand. They have no shop of that side of the city. The north/west side of the city is covered with Blanchardardtown and Liffey Valley. I'm surprised they didn't go into the Pavillions or Airside when they opened.

Irish Planners, and Dublin ones in particular, appear to have a deviant fixation with single entrance/exit layouts into the very largest developments.

It would appear that the craziest, least realistic proposal will AWAYS get the nod from Local Authority Planners.

It's not a new thing,as can be seen in so many of Dublins city-centre developments since the 1970's,most of which feature either single or very closely spaced entrance/exits.

Part of it,I suspect is the LA not wanting to have charges of being Car centric levelled against them, but thus failing to recognize the reality of such developments being TOTALLY reliant on Private car traffic for footfall.

The almost total lack of high-frequency main and local based Public Transport options result in this skewing of business, but none of the big guns in Planning are willing yet to break that vicious circle.

The poster boy for this amateurish cack-handedness,sits just outside the village of Dundrum in Dublin 14,where centuries old roads & traffic infrastructure remains untouched,in order to spite the very essence of the "Dundrum Town Centre" dominating the landscape.

Incredible to think that somebody actually sat down, and planned a scenario in which one single Retail Development can (and regularly does) impact directly upon a major European Motorway Route as in the M50/M11 Rosslare-Rest of Europe gateway....

Hopefully, the Dundrum "crew" were'nt involved in the Santry gig,but knowing Ireland, there's probably a Brother or Sister in Law in there somewhere...

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

this isn't a good option though, the Swords Road at Omni and Santry Avenue will be fulltime car parks.

That's the only conclusion I can come to.

If someone lives in Swords for example and is driving past Omni would they be inclined to detour into Omni/M&S and get stuck for hours on end, ok not hours on end but it would be a nightmare to go in to M&S for a bag of salad or what have you and try to get back onto the Swords Road.

there's already a TESCO in Omni with their Finest* (questionable) range, Lidl with their Deluxe range and an Aldi within a stone's throw with their own high quality range.

Overall for M&S just looks like a weird place, maybe the decision maker was having a fit at the time!

M&S worldwide went through a retrenchment a few years back, sold off Brooks Brothers in the US, got rid of flagship store on Blvd Hausmann in Paris, and closed their Dun Laoghaire food-only shop.

As I say Santry looks like a weird choice for a food-only M&S shop.

Traffic in the Omni was already going to be a nightmare with the run up to Christmas and this is just going to make it worse. Honestly, it'll put me off visiting the centre at all. Don't get me wrong, I like that they're adding more shops, but the traffic situation is a joke.
