Mouse Replacement

    Howdy,

My trusty original perixx MX2000 scroll wheel broke on Thursday. While it didn't cost much 4-5 years ago, it was perfectly suited to me, its a big mouse for big hands! I actually bought two so that i have been using the same mouse at home and in work, which was convenient. It was superseded by several models since (of the same name), but the build quality etc. is apparently pretty bad going by reviews. Pic below

    Perixx-MX-2000.jpg

In essence i am looking for something as similar as possible as a replacement. In essence the things would like is a big right handed mouse, being able to change DPI on the fly, and a thumbrest/button.

I see the Logitech MX Master has most of this (except the dpi switch) this, but is quite pricey.

If anybody has any cheaper suggestions that would be great! Doesnt need to be wireless or anything fancy.

As it happens, I've got it back working.

I'm not too familiar with the terminology for mouse internals so bear with me but in essence one of the axles snapped of the mouse wheel, the one which goes through the unit registering the scrolling motion. I superglued it back on using a tweezers to hold it as best i could perpendicular to the wheel. Put it all back together and its fine for now.

Not sure how long the superglue will hold it (especially as it likely isnt perfectly perpendicular), so no doubt i will be back here again, so your suggestion, and any others that come in are still most welcome!

Logitech M705 - no DPI switch (not sure why you'd need it in the office tbh) but otherwise a near perfect mouse.

Been using one since last June and reckon the AA battery will last well into 2018.

G602 or M570 trackball might suit you too.

There is a thread here in PC gaming, it might not something you need in it, maybe not if its for work..

I use the G502 for gaming and it is really great for that with dpi settings and a free rolling scroll wheel button but it may be a bit small for you if you like a bigger mouse as it is narrower than my old G500 which I use in work but I have gotten used to it

Just on the DPI switch, for me its nothing to do with gaming, I do a fair bit of GIS and some CAD and for the most part at a large scale its good to have a high ratio of pointer movement to mouse movements but this is intermingled with detailed that need more precision, and hence higher mouse to pointer movement ratio if that makes any sense!

That actually looks more or less the same shape as the one I have cheers! Yeah shovel hands unfortunately mean a clutch type grip on smaller mice (mouses?) for me, which enevitably end in pain and /or cramp!

Does it have a DPI switch?

Edit: Logitech seem to be the go to based on the recommendations so far. Don't suppose pcworld or other would have them out on show to try for size etc.?

They do also have a storage system on the mouse with 3profiles. Which you can use on yhe fly.

    And softwear to have macros.

Its a great mouse there now in with a new company but you might be able to find one some where

I'm using the G602 and really like it, for what that's worth.

Really liking all the buttons, and as small as they are, they're all easily identifiable.

AFAIK most stores don't have any stock of the cool mice, so order from Amazon & send it back if it ends up being the wrong shape.

I can also recommend to watch some reviews by RocketJumpNinja, he goes into a lot of detail explaining how to choose a mouse.

I have a Mionix Naos 5000 mouse that looks very similar to that. The 5000 is an old version but it's replacement the 7000 looks identical. Might be worth a go.

Anything above 3000 is completely pointless and unusable. It's marketing babble past that.

I have the 4 presets on my mouse set to 400/800/1200/1600. The mouse goes up to 5600. I use 400 for most fps games and 1200 for windows.

Get yourself a good optical sensor mouse. You will likely not use above 1600 dpi ever.

RocketJumpNinja just did a video on the Logitech G102/G203 (€33-37), says they're 99% as good as the G Pro (€60+)

Well, baggage handlers across 4 flights in two days managed to re-break the scroll wheel on this, so think I will be looking again!

I'll check out the suggestions above - and if anybody has anymore they would be very much appreciated.

Maybe get a clamshell case along with whatever you order?

It was in a rigid suitcase, didn't save it though! The repair was never going to be as strong as the original - I just shouldn't have brought it with me.

    Got gifted one of these.

Great price considering the quality here.

Comfortable, Nice feel to it. Doesn't feel cheap at all. The software is solid. all keys can be remapped /changed to anything you wish even key combos . Great for sim gaming but also to work with. hardly have to use the keyboard thanks to all the handy extra keys on the mouse.

Can adjust colour scheme to anything you'd want if that kind of thing is your bag.

That's a whole load of buttons!

There's a Logitech g402 Hyperion on the amazon prime sale, for £31 which I think I will go for. I also placed a low bid on advert on a Logitech MX master as its nearby and I can collect. I don't normally low ball, but I don't want to pay more than for getting the new g402 off amazon. Reviews say its good for palm grip etc which would suit me, and looks sizeable enough for my large hands.

Anybody got a g402? Any comments on it?

Been using a Zowie FK1 for a year or so. Seems good to me but a similar Razer Deathadder is my only other experience with premium mice.

I have one for 3+ years and I love it. Don't really have any complaints with it.

The two buttons that stick up on the right that allow you to adjust the speed can sometimes be bumped by kids or people who wouldn't use computers often. So if you have a lot of "non-computery" people it might be worth going simpler.

It's perfect for me though and seems to be pretty bulletproof!

Edit: Actually not quite three years yet:
You purchased this item on 12 Sep 2014.

I've never owned any Razer gear, however...

I started gaming about 13 years ago. Mainly I was a UT2004 player and was heavily involved in the UT community (multiple server/IRC/Teamspeak admin, Clanbase Nations Cup competitor, etc).

My point is I've been exposed to plenty of people that have owned and used Razer gear. The amount of times they've had to replace their equipment due to quality or longevity issues is astonishing to me.

IMO Razer is only premium in the price you pay for it. It's not premium quality.

I've had the same Logitech MX518 since about 2005 or 2006. I actually remember buying it in Currys or PC world for IIRC about €70. It's been with me to god knows how many LANs, house moves, etc. It's also taken quite a bit of abuse along the way. Never once has it let me down. About the only thing that's changed is the rubbery coating fading after so much use.

Razer definitely have a spotty track record for build quality. Logitech are bulletproof in that respect I'm not wild about their styling which is the entirely superficial reason I didn't go for one.

The G203/Pro & G403/703 are very conservatively styled.

Cheers, yeah my current mouse has a DPI switch, and seeing as two of us use the computer its convenient for changing it to our preferences. No kids luckily, and the dog hasn't shown any interest in the computer yet so should be safe enough!

I ordered it anyway - my only concern is if i don't find the shape as comfortable as the old mouse, of which i have two, one in the office and one at home, so i never use anything else! I can always sell it on and try again - saw a lot of cheap ones on amazon which seem to be a similar shape to my old one, so can take a punt on one of them in that case.

Anyone using a G403 (not the 402), looks like Logitech toned down their spacecraft-like styling they went a bit wild with for a while. Seems to resemble the old mx518 a lot.

    I went from a G402 to a G403 Wireless.

The G403 is bloody amazing, the only slight downside is that it sports a measly 2 side buttons.

I count 5 on the side of my G402. I only ever use 2.

I use it every day and for 9 hours plus most weekdays and I had to look down to count how many buttons were on the side. Shows how much use I make of those extra three!

Right, so i got the G402, and have a couple of weeks use with it now. Its very good (for what i use it for) however its still doesn't fit my hand as well as the old one, although this is likely because the old one is the only mouse i have really used for four odd years or so, as i had one for in the office and one for at home.

The only thing is that is it quite light, the old one had weights in it to give it a bit of heft, which i preferred.

I think given enough time it will eventually feel as natural as the old one.

I dont play FPS, but the "sniper" button or whatever its called is quite handy when i need more accuracy in drawings etc. just for a few seconds without having to changed the DPI back and forth.

    I decided to order a G403... I'm in love. It's the perfect successor to a MX518.
