Three Championship races are part of this event in July (running concurrently):
    • The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 24 Hour World Championships
    • The World Masters Association (WMA) 24 Hour World Championships
    • The Irish National 24 Hour Championships

Due to this event being held in Belfast this year, there will (hopefully!) be a lot of extra interest here, with some of the big names of ultra-running descending on this fair isle in July, so I thought it might be good to start up a thread nice and early to chat about all aspects of the race.

I know that the American and Australian teams have been announced thus far, and the UK team is to be announced next week, so we can get a bit more chat going about favourites etc once we know exactly what runners are participating.
    Let the fun commence!

During Poland's 24 Hour Championship held in Park Zdrowie, Patrycja
    Bereznowska
set a NEW world record. She ran 256.246 km* (159.223
    mile...s)
beating Japan's Mami Kudo previously held record of 255.303 km (158.637 miles)
    set in 2011.
When we asked about her new world record, Patrycja said, "I still find it
hard to believe. I did not plan to make a record and only to fight for the
podium. After 12 hours, I realized that this was a good day to try for
    more."
"I look forward to racing in Belfast with other strong women's teams
from the USA, Japan and Sweden", she added.

The UK team has been announced as well:

    Men
    Robbie Britton
    Marco Consani
    Dan Lawson
    Pat Robbins
    James Stewart

    Women
    Jess Baker
    Sharon Law
    Debbie Martin-Consani
    Beth Pascall
    Ali Young

Definitely some strong contenders here, individually as well as for the team medals

What happens if the world champion runs a slower time than the winner of one of the other races (assuming this could happen theoretically at least?)

two different races...whoever wins WC is world champ ..whoever wins open race is open race winner..though will look messy on Duv results website.. if he is slower the the open race winner he'll get some slaggin on plane home..

Are the Irish team entered in the Irish championship?

Yes they are and so is Thomas Bubendorfer (Austria), Vilnis Pleite(Latvia), Rolando Espina & Rex Brillantes (Phillipines) and Jan Uzik (Slovakia) as this is open to any competitor that is a registered member of an AAI affiliated club.
An Irish Runner taking part but not a member of an affiliated club will not be included.

    I have a question:

Someone said to me last year that when you are being passed on the course for this race, that you will be passed by faster runners on the inside, so shouldn't run on the inside edge of the course. I found in practice however, that mostly, people passed on the outside. What's the official rule for this? It'll be more important than ever this year as the course is going to be so crowded:eek: and there will be so many faster runners constantly overtaking.

Hope everyone's training is going well. 11 days to go:eek:

It's not an official rule its just etiquette that people being lapped will move out of the way for those competing at the front end of the field. It falls under the DBAD rule though sadly not everyone abides by it.

In any race if you envisage being lapped multiple times though its probably best off to move out and run a wider line in general, you will lose less time vs trying to bob and weave out and back over and over as you get lapped.

Does that then not add significant mileage as a result?

With course a 4m width you are not exactly talking huge amounts (maybe 1%), similar to a 10km on track. Again this is etiquette much like starting in the right position at the start of races and not impeding your fellow athletes especially when there is the likes of World Championships on the line for those not in the Open race, it is a matter of respecting your fellow athletes.

Game face A. Be selfish. You're training for this one for the best part of a year. Not the time to be worried about etiquette.
You are in a championship race, stick to the inside and if someone wants to overtake you that's up to them to worry about.

In a 24 hours race it doesn't matter all that much as long as most runners are reasonable (which almost all of them are). The only time this becomes an issue is when runners are running 3 abreast, blocking the path for anyone approaching from behind. In that case they can expect some verbals.

That's good to hear - thought I'd seen on Facebook that one of the main contenders was out injured but might have got that wrong. Can't remember what page it was even on now !

??? Must have crossed wires somewhere. Don't know who you are talking about but it was definitely a male I was reading about. Seems from the bit I read that he had been bragging that he would win the event but is injured now? To be honest I'm a little sketchy on the detail but it was definitely a male runner.

Ah right, apologies. There was a rumour that one of the US runners was pulling out. I made a few enquiries and it wasn't true.
Anyway no matter, did you not hear? I'm going too win it. I'm going to run 290k in about 12 hours then head into the city centre and get pissed. I'll then head back about 10am and walk another 10k to make it a nice round 300k, can't wait!

Mad that the leaders have already done 40k in 3 hours flat, I'd gladly take that and fook off home for a kip never mind run for 21 more hours:pac:

So the leader has done almost a marathon in just over 3 hours.... wow. Can they possibly keep up that pace for 24 hours...

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think Kouros record is 7 min/mile average for the whole 24 hours which is something like 3:03 marathon pace.
