    Hi all

I'm a total newby to training, I started training with a person trainer last week, While under pressure doing weights a get a sudden thumping headache which lasts for a couple of hours.

For example today I was doing 120kg leg press, 12 reps, on the last press I got the pounding headache to the point I had to stop training.

Last week I have up all sugars and I'm on a low carb diet and consuming roughly 2100 calories a day.

Blood pressure was fine last year but going to get this checked again just in case.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? would my diet have something to do with it?

    Thanks
    Jason

Cant give medical advice here, but I know at the gym I go to the notice on the eqpt states that if you find it hard to breath, get headaches etc STOP AND SEE YOUR GP.
I think you should take that advice.

Yeah my Trainer has told me to see my GP, I was just wondering if this has happened anyone else after they gave up sugars etc.

    Are you drinking enough water
    Also yes go to doc

I drink 4-5 litres of water a day so I doubt it would be dehydration.

Yes I'm booking the docs tomorrow to get checked over, I'm hoping it's the sudden change in my diet that's causing it.

I had a dull headache for about 3 days last week when I came off the sugar.

    Thanks

You probs need some sugar, carbs and a BP test.

I had something similar before, I had also cut carbs and sugars. I was also guilty of holding my breath which doen't help. Headaches didn't last hours though and I found water helped. I went to the Doc just in case, my BP was up, I think you'd be wise to see yours, no sense in risking it

Thanks for the help, Do you know what I actually think I did hold my breath on that last rep try g to push it out, that could well be part of it.

Going to get my BP checked in any case though.

Yeah it's possible you're basically trying to burst blood vessels in your head doing that! I would bet money you went purple on that last rep.

Probably unrelated but I gave up sugar too and replaced my milk choc with dark chocolate.I got dull headaches and stopped training but the headaches persisted. It turns out I have a tannin sensitivity which my Doc didn't know about.Had to stop eating dark choc, nuts etc and anything with Tanins in it.Headaches disappeared after that.
id go with the posters above but just detailing it here as what you describe is exactly the way I was but it took me months to discover the problem.

It was happening a female friend of mine some time back.

When she saw her GP it eventually emerged that she had dangerously low levels of intrinsic factor (i think) which meant she couldn't absorb vitamin b12. My point is,if you get headaches you should always get them checked out

I used to get that all the time on a leg press also - mainly from holding my breath too much, the pressure in the back of my neck caused
by pressing into the back pad or straining neck forwards. Stopped using the leg press and had never happened since.

Would be no harm getting it checked anyway
