I want to use Google Code/APIs (or possible something else!)

Total noob here (even though I did study Java in college 17 years ago!).

I want to use data from Google Maps from a project. Google Maps displays data in a certain way. I want to be able to access the baseline data and essentially display it in a different way.

I'm not sure how to go about tackling this. Is there a starting point? Should I be looking to learn code (what ever that might be) to access the data?

Any tips on where to start?

What do you mean when you say baseline data?

I want to know the number of vehicles at a particular point on google maps. Google maps displays these as red lines etc. I want the metric value

It's not possible. Aside from anything else, Google does not know the number of vehicles at a particular point. Their traffic figures are based on average travel times of users of their navigation products (among other things). The only method that they expose traffic information in is "duration_in_traffic" (https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/directions/intro), and that's only if you have a Premium (paid-for) Maps plan

I spoke to Google yesterday (they rang me after submitting an inquiry). They do allow access to data points but its a five figure cost.

I am going to research "duration_in_traffic" and see if that can do what I want. Average travel time is good but what I want to do is use (say for example) average travel time, do some calculations on it, and display it in a meaningful way.
