Student Paramedic Recruitment February 2017

Just thought I'd create this thread seeing as there isn't one already for February. Tests this Thursday.
I attended a course to prepare. I thought it wasn't that useful because I had practiced a good bit on those tests and was expecting something more focused on what it was like in the link rather than psychometric tests in general.

Once you understand what to do you're pretty much there. Just do some online tests or keep repeating the practice ones, although you learn them pretty quick so other sites would be better.

I thought i was well prepared but the time limit really puts pressure on you so if you can't figure out a question just skip it and come back to it at the end once you've gone through all the questions. Even though i had that mindset it still held me back and ended up hurting me.

Not sure if it's frowned upon to discuss the amount of questions and time you have here but you really don't have time to waste. Good luck!

I wonder how many are going for it.... Boards has been pretty dead since the campaign before december 2016. There were only a handful on here talking about the December campaign as well.

    Thank you :)
The only way really is practice.
I'm surprised myself there isn't more discussion on boards. Hopefully that means there's less candidates but will still have to pass :)

Best of luck with it! Yeah it seems very quiet alright. I would have expected more especially with the DFB panel being suspended/delayed.

Hope the tests go well for you!

How long are the tests? As in how long are u there for in total does anyone know? In for 3pm, out for?

Best of luck to everyone doing it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 199 ✭✭Hana98

Tests are 12minutes each. So should be out before 3:30. I know there's another group in a 2 as well. Good luck to everyone :0 :)

Dunno if this question will apply to anyone here....but is there anyone out there on both the ICV panel and the Student Paramedic panel?? I'm on both and am nearly at contract stage for and ICV position. I just got a text there on Thursday for a training place in Ballinasloe for the Student Paramedic August 2017 training place....I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I sign a contract and begin working for the ICVs will it affect my ability to go ahead with the paramedic campaign...as in I may end up working on the ICVs for only two months and then have to hand in my notice to go for the student paramedic place....

Not sure how this all works...do the HSE frown upon people working few months on the ICVs and then leaving to go to train as paramedic... or is it the norm. If anyone has any inkling to this please let me know! thanks :)

With regards to the number interviewed this time round, I was candidate 132 so I presume quite a lot were interviewed?

Heard it was like that for the last one too.

Candidate number would be from everyone who submitted an application. So would be much higher as anyone can submit one but then be ruled out for not meeting requirements, passing tests etc. Also assuming thats what the number means although you'd assume it would be linear like that. Then again I submitted my application right at the end and got a fairly low candidate number... Or maybe there were less applicants than I would have thought.

    Where did you all place?

Also emailed NAS HR on sunday / monday night about any news re future classes didnt get a response ðŸ’😢

Said it to another guy already but if you want exact numbers guys ring up NRS and ask for your overall position. Others did that and were given it. I think it was NRS they rang.

Then say you're number 10 on this panel, and your overall position is 110, then you know there are 99 from the other drives. Then if you subtract the 39 we know are from the panel before december, you will get the amount of people on the December panel.

What were you guys marked on 4 or 5 topics?

Glad a few more faces have popped up in the forum! It gets a bit dead :P It's a unique experience you don't really get to talk about with anyone as we don't meet each other. And also one not many have gone through or are going through. Wish there were more of us on here.

I rang HRS today and they advised that they can't give your order of Merit until there has been an expression of interest. They told me to ring back after EOI

Anyone know when eventually qualified does a student paramedic get a choice of region to be posted to? for e.g I live in Carlow, I wouldnt want to be posted to the other side of the country! Wouldnt be practical for me to even apply as I have a mortgage etc. Carlow, Kilkenny, Kildare, Laois, Wicklow would be doable for me but any other posting e.g Cork, Kerry, Galway etc just wouldn't be practical for me.
Is there any flexibility in this regard? Do they try to place people as near as possible to accommodate people choices?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭mar2313

I've been wondering the same thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 458 ✭✭Parapara2017

No, you're posted where you are needed.

As a Student Paramedic you will need to attend the college in either Tallaght or Ballinasloe (driver training is in dublin though).

As a student paramedic they will TRY to place you near to where you live for your observations and placements etc. Although I imagine its never too bad.

Your internship could be anywhere in the country, then on successful completion of the internship and registration as a paramedic. You will be offered a place anywhere in the country.

Think I saw someone mention one guy they worked with lived in Donegal but worked in Kerry / Cork.

Wonder do they even ask you if you have a preference once qualified :-/ surely you don't have to take the first place you're offered?

No they don't. In the job description / add info, it lays basically everything out and mentions once qualified you can be stationed anywhere in the NAS operational area.

I think there is an internal transfer system available to you after a few years but no idea how useful it is.

Also you're either offered a temp or permanent contract. You don't get other offers afaik. And if declined you would have to pay the HSE / NAS the cost of your training.

I don't think that's true, i understood that if you drop out of the training course you have to pay the full cost of it. Also, they can't expect you to accept the first job offer you get. I'm pretty sure it works on a panel basis like it does for the training course.

Unless you fulfill 2 years work with the HSE you will have to pay the full or part of (minus service given) the cost of your training. The idea isn't that you have to pay for the hassle, NAS are not a private college, they're training you to work for them. If you don't hold up your end of the deal, they're not going to have trained you for free.

During your internship you are stationed anywhere in the country afaik, then you will be offered a new contract which can also be anywhere, including the same base.

Its the same in any other service, the guards will post you anywhere you don't get a say, the army, PSNI, Australian services etc.

I wonder if the security scare caused a delay with recruitment, I know incoming emails werent going through.

Folks... Parapara knows what he/she is talking about. The info being given is correct. Like it has been said it's a "national" ambulance service so that means nationally! It's all down to the luck of the draw and where bodies are needed once you are ready for your internship.

Once you complete the paramedic coarse You are assigned an area of the national ambulance service you don't get a choice it's not an offer its you are going to x see you on Monday you can apply for transfers which yes work on a panel basis but you may be waiting a good length but until then you will be working in the assigned area given to you
