Starts next week, anything catching anyones eye or have anything in mind?

Willie has mentioned not many will go but what will represent him in the Aintree hurdle? He said Footpad and A Fire would go Punchestown.

I really fancy Landofhopeandglory to run a huge race in whatever he goes for. Hopefully at aintree. On further viewings of the triumph he took a while to get going and if more use was made of him i think he might go close.

Id back him on the day myself. The bowl looks between Cue and N River so be a no bet race.

Really think one of O learys horses trained by Noel Meade is been plotted for the National cant think of his name. Also like Bishops Road.

I see the forum favourite horse labaik is going into the sale ring at Aintree. Tbh probably the best time to cash in on his potential but will certainly be interested to see how much he goes for.

Impossible to trust any of them when they've all beaten each other. Defi is miles ahead of them anyway and will sluice up again.

He should, but it always seems like that at aintree, and there is always shocks with festival winner under-performing. Ill be looking on the day as its hard to know how many runner there will be and what the prices will be like.

Id be backing LAND if he was over 8/1 in a smallish field.

Native River should be more suited by going back to a flat track. Won the 3 mile novice at Aintree last year. If he runs in the Martell Cup/Betfred Bowl or whatever it's called now, he should take plenty of beating.

Like an idiot i agreed to meet with a few college friends in Monaghan next weekend so i'm going straight from Liverpool to meet them :o

Have yet to book my flight back(Friday night or Saturday morning), would Dublin or Belfast be a handier airport to get to Monaghan from taking into account the Buseireann fiasco as i'll be using public transport?

    Thanks for any info.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,553 ✭✭✭✭Copper_pipe

A quick look in Skyscanner show Belfast to Liverpool is a lot cheaper than Liverpool.

Not sure about getting there though.

John McKinley do Monaghan to Dublin airport alright but I don't know if any going Monaghan to Belfast

The cab strike was a small section of private hire drivers threatening to block routes into the city. They've backed down.

The train strike is still scheduled to go ahead on the Saturday. But it looks like they still have trains going to and from the track....to the determent to the reset of the City!

Carlingford Lough not running in the National, Last Samurai will be top weight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45 Roundtd181

Very little build up to Aintree. Who do you fancy lads? I like Cap Soleil in the mares,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

I actually think Aintree is gonna be very poor this week. Mullins & Elliott will be keeping their big guns at home as they battle it out for Trainers Title.

We had 19 winners at Cheltenham and I'd say a lot of those will be kept for Fairyhouse and/or Punchestown.

The Bowl and Melling Chase look like awful races (especially The Bowl) and I have to say even The National doesn't fill me with excitement. Harry Fry isn't running Neon Wolf, Unowhatimeanharry or Americain. Buveur D'Air, Defi Du Seuil and Altior will be the star attractions and all will be long odds on so not really a betting proposition.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 7,269 ✭✭✭Gamebred

Is Altior running here? thought he was going to Punchestown or Sandown?

Might bite winging fences should be some sight, the absolute state of them novices hurdles and bumpers very poor looking at the entries grade 1 in name only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,474 ✭✭✭longshotvalue

Jeez just had a look and altough itll all be worth watching the races are very poor really, there really isnt room for both aintree and punchestown.

Just need to find that aintree special horse that wins at a huge price and just makes no senses

You could be right actually, I just presumed (and hoped) he'd be adding some star quality to Aintree.

Forgot about Might Bite, hopefully he adds some of his usual excitement to the meeting!

Top weight Carlingford Lough and Foxrock are among nine withdrawals from Saturday's Grand National at Aintree.

Thank goodness for the NRNB. CL was forecast as one (of the two possible winners) from one of my Oracles.
    - Which forecast the 1st & 2nd in the GoldCup this year (SJ & MR), but was off a fair bit off last year in the GN.
Hopefully the other one can do it (priced @15-20), will post up anyway on Saturday.

Are you seriously holding back on a "tip" for the Grand National?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,681 ✭✭✭BumperD

He had a crystal ball last year, intertwined with a Russian horoscope, meshed with some weather algorithms that churned out a loser . I cannot be bothered digging up the piece but it's there last year if you want a laugh.
The Gold Cup alleged tip can be filed under "fake news".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,553 ✭✭✭✭Copper_pipe

I'll be laying off some of my Pleasant Company bet id say.

Place lay for a 100 and let it ride then :)

Will put up on Saturday, as mentioned last years was of no use (there's no guarantee with such things).

But the same fella said of the Gold Cup "It will be won by a 7y/o outsider". Have a look at the 1st & 2nd, the only other 7yo wasn't a fav, as such didn't have a bet on him (Native River) just the other two.

If anyone is a bit superstitious, perhaps this (from the oracle) may be worth a consideration for the big day:

It wasn't a great result in the GN, previous years were much better. For the GCup though in March, couldn't have asked for much better in 1st & 2nd.

Sure as long as everyone else picked the winner themselves last year, no worries. There was 'only a few' to choose from....

    1st. Rule The World 33-1
    2. The Last Samuri at 8-1
    3. Vics Canvas at 100-1
    4. Gilgamboa at 28-1
    5. Goonyella at 12-1
    6. Ucello Conti 25-1
    7. Vieux Lion Rouge 66-1
    8. Morning Assembly 16-1
    9. Shutthefrontdoor 12-1
    10. Unioniste 28-1
    11. Le Reve 50-1
    12. Buywise 33/1
    13. Pendra
    14. Triolo D'Alene
    15. Just A Par
    16. Many Clouds

    Also ran:
Silviniaco Conti, First Lieutenant, Wonderful Charm, Ballynagour, On His Own, The Druids Nephew, Rocky Creek, Sir Des Champs, Holywell, Shutthefrontdoor, Soll, Boston Bob, Aachen, Double Ross, Le Reve, Gallant Oscar, Onenightinvienna, Kruzhlinin, Katenko, Black Thunder, Ballycasey, Hadrian's Approach, Saint Are, Home Farm, The Romford Pele.
    Did not run: O’Faolains Boy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

I picked the winner last year. It's in a thread there somewhere.

This year it'll be Cause Of Causes, Vicente or Rogue Angel. My Oracle told me.

Whoooah! That Predictor thingy says, "In the GN this year a XXXX year old MAY be the winner"

That's not a prediction FFS. Any aged horse in the race MAY be the winner.

Nope, it specifically names two horses for the GN this particular year. One of which CL is now withdrawn. For the G'Cup in March it did say a '7yo outsider', and last year for the GN it also gave a particular age (but did not place).

Of course it's not an exact science (nor indeed any type of science), so take with a large spoon of salt (as with anything, from anyone).

Sizing John was not an outsider, he was 7/1 4th Fav!

@9 on the day, and like MR(below) bit higher before that. J/4F and near 'ten-fold' isn't clear favorite territory.

Acca - is it that you believe the Oracle has mystical powers and can pick winners by seeing into the future?

Or are you actually claiming this guy knows his stuff, pay attention?

Anyone calling a 7/1 shot an "outsider" in a race where the favourite is 3/1 does not know their stuff.

I laugh at people giving a tip for a grade 1, grade 2 or grade 3 but this is just embarrassing.

A tip for the most competitive race of the year, where luck has a big part to play and every horse is trying to win.

I am not sure he knows the meaning of a tip.

He was 66/1 for the Gold Cup in January after he beat Sub lieutenant, Puppy Power was admanant that he would stay. He had dropped to 40's before he won the Irish Gold Cup after which he was 14s.

He may have been returned 7/1, but he was well fancied and backed. I'd say if Henry was sad about losing any horse it was Sizing John.

I suppose the prize money won just about covered the cash spent on Alary!

Carlingord is a non runner that a loser.

MR placed (e/w arrays 5 from 6). CL is indeed a loser (or Void more recently - ever since NRNB started to be offered), but was my only other main selection.

Agree the GN is very much a lucky dip event, and as such have utililsied some lucky dip sources just for this particular event.

Cooper has some interesting rides on the first day.

Irishracing.com have Empire of Dirt best price showing up as 6/1 with Boylesports. Would have been tasty if was true!

Think Identity Thief is no a brainer without the fav in the Aintree Hurdle. The horse clearly has gone mad with the chasing game.

A poor race that aintree hurdle. I'm not sure if I could back Cooper on any ride very hot and cold at the moment.
