Uncorked Model S 75 and 75D are about 1 second faster 0-100 than Gumbo's table above. This was standard for cars produced around July 2017 and later.

How does one check the corked/uncorked status?

    😂

So, no way of finding out by checking SW etc?

When Tesla uncorked the cars they generally changed the graphics on the screen to the newer figure.

I wouldn't know which was the old v new graphic. Might have to test it out 😃. I've yet to test the 0-100 on the MY with AB.

You should definitely be able to notice it without any tools.

    75D 0-60 in 5.2

    Uncorked 75D 0-60 in 4.4

It feels like a lot more tbh.

Yeah, I don't think mine is uncorked then. Definitely doesn't feel like a 4.4 second car. My MYJ has AB and the S has a lot less punch than that. Pretty sure it was registered in June 2017 too. I'll reach out to Tesla in the New Year.

I think uncorking was from July 2017 onwards. But you'd have to reckon that as it's just a software unlock, that any SC could do it if asked nicely?

I came across a FB post about it here where the chap who got his uncorked had his first registration in March 2017

    It was a free upgrade

I'm not a car person at all but the model S has been on my wish list since it was announced. Finally at a point where the amount I can spend on a car has caught up with Model S second hand prices so have started seriously looking at the model S for our next car. Would appreciate any input on versions to buy/avoid.

From reading this thread and some YouTube my shortlist is as follows:

    1. 2017 or newer to get facelift model with MCU2 and avoid potential battery issues with some of the older versions.

    2. 90kWh as we need a minimum 300km real world range (don't think the 75 would manage this?)

    3. Ideally full leather

There's lots of other features I'd like but the three above are most important. I've also been told to avoid ones with Air suspension as apparently these give a lot of issues and are expensive to fix?

This will likely be the nicest car I have ever owned and the hope is that I'd keep it for a long time so will be budgeting a small amount yearly to keep it repaired and in good condition, but would like to avoid any very expensive surprises if possible.

Not in a particular rush to buy but likely our current car will require decent money to get it past the NCT in March next year so will hope to be buying before then.

Any advice on the above and what would people consider a good price?

Ideally you want it to be CCS enabled. Enhanced AP is also nice. A facelift 75 should do 300km real world range, but a 90 will do it with spare.

If it has a sunroof, make sure it works.

If you’re willing to go to the UK, I can recommend a dealer. I’ve never recommended a dealer before. I picked up an S in London a few weeks ago.

Facelift 75 will do 300km real world motorway range and the sat nav is very good. If it is going to be tight, just follow its instructions, i.e. "stay under 110km/h to reach your destination"

CCS is pretty much a must now, but it only costs €291 to upgrade (last time I looked)

MCU2 is not necessary, but it rejuvenates the car and gives all the latest software updates (€1550 if not done already)

If you get a 2018 or newer car, it will still have battery and drivetrain warranty (although you are unlikely to need it)

Prices are all over the shop but the cheapest facelift Model S sold in Ireland that I know of, a 172 S75, went for €16k. This was absurdly cheap imho and you are unlikely to score a bargain like that for the foreseeable

Never imported a car myself before but if there is significant money to be saved I'd definitely consider it. Can you PM me the dealer?

Didn't even know it needed a CCS upgrade, thought the Leaf was the only non CCS car available. Is there an easy way to tell if it has CCS?

I'd avoid a sunroof, known weak point for water ingress, echo the Mark II style over the nose cone era which were all but built in tents, air susp is Merc (along with a lot of other parts) so well designed, Tesla control arms and suspension parts are known weaknesses but not an expensive repair, the battery has a limited life fuse that needs replacing around now or the next year or so for a 2017 era.

CCS upgrade is under the rear seats so nothing you can visibly see, there is a physical adapter you put in the Tesla charge port that allows a CCS plug to fit.

When you mention leather I assume you mean fake leather, 2015 was the cut off for real leather in any Tesla S

Look up the North, way easier than UK route

Nice - that's what I was thinking. Factory uncorked from 7/2017 build dates, but available to earlier builds on request to your local SC.

Def worth getting, although obviously there is a small range penalty. The GOMs on the uncorked 75Ds seem to all show about 330kms range, vs 370 on the uncorked models 🤷‍♂️

Good points. I just had the fuse done on my own car, just a month or two out of warranty, but I am rather assertive, so got it done for free. Also had it done last month on a flipper pre-facelift and it cost €243, so not the end of the world. Needs doing every 7-10 years or so

Very much depends. Typically the only way you are nearly guaranteed to save money is to smuggle one in from the UK via Northern Ireland and have it in private ownership up there for a reasonable time (minimum 3 months, I would do 4 months to be sure)

There is barely any saving getting a car directly from Northern Ireland, and again, it is up to you to prove it was privately owned up there. If Revenue do not accept your proof, you are fucked

The €16k facelift 172 Model S 75 I mentioned, was already on Irish plates. It will be very hard for anyone to beat that, even going the smuggling route…

If you have a lot of patience and can jump at a good deal like that 16k S 75, that's great. I saw one earlier this year…a 7 seater I was just not in a position to buy and I wasn't looking either. It was posted in here.

There's a lot to be said for the choice available in the UK. You might not make a saving necessarily, but you will more easily find what you want and can bring it home in a day, or have it transported if you don't want to collect. I found and locked one in within a couple of days. The only risk is that you fly over and find a sh1tbox, so it's important to find a reputable dealer or have a couple of cars lined up to view while over there. Definitely more attractive if going the schnuggling route 🤩

I'll keep on eye on the Irish and Northern Ireland market for a few months anyway but if nothing has cropped up by spring next year I'll consider the UK route. Thanks all for the help. Now to see if I have the patience to wait for a good deal 😂

I noticed the brakes were a bit spongey when I test drove the car, so organised a brake fluid check for today. It was the only recommended check on the APP, so must be due (every 4 years).

Ranger recommends brake fluid replacement. Said there was moisture and discolouration, so needs doing. Not surprised, but have to be done in service centre. It's not a mobile job.

Wondering if I should have Tesla do it, or go to the local Atlas garage? The latter would obviously be more convenient. Haven't got a price from either yet.

I’d go independent.. I got the rear brakes overhauled on my S the other week with no issue.

    +1

I got the front brakes on YOUR car overhauled a few weeks ago in my local garage with no issue 😀

How much did the rear brakes set you back?

@unkel That Tesla has 4 callipers at the rear so I replaced all 8 pads at the rear and replaced the two parking brake motors that engage the parking brake and it got rid of the fault on the dash. I used cheap Ebay parts but the brakes were so seized that it took the mechanic about 4 hours to change them so I I ended up paying about €400 all in. But at least I didn’t have to replace the discs or the calipers. Annoyingly the front pads that you got done aren’t contacting the disc properly so I reckon they still need work.

Its also telling me now that it needs a new 12v battery, and one of the xenon bulbs blew the other day, but there was a spare one in the boot so that saved me €140 (very expensive bulbs!!)

Still need to top up the AC gas and see if that gets rid of the A/C warning. Hopefully it just needs a top up and isn’t a leaky compressor or something

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,192 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I'd ignore the 12V battery warning, the battery is fine, it's probably just a time / mileage based trigger like the pyro fuse. I was pleasantly surprised though that the 12V is easily accessible under the frunk. Must be the same for all AWD pre-facelift cars. The one in my RWD pre-facelift was a bitch to get at very deep down behind the frunk

Bit of a bargain could be had here, CCS, MCU2, EAP, 2 full years NCT, asking €19k

Yeah a quick search shows it was close enough to that. Fools and their money…
