If it's an all out strike then all services will be affected (apart from Dublin Bus I'd imagine).

It looks like I'll have to take a taxi from Kent station.

I thought there was some kind of private shuttle bus for the airport? Would imagine taxis will be very busy in the morning.

    FYI
Some Train routes into Cork also are being effected. The Irish Rail site has details.

    no Cork commuter trains running.

Looks like I'll be driving to Cork airport - then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭phater phagan

Thanks guys for the info. Is the route to the airport well signposted from N22?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 508 ✭✭✭purpleisafruit

From N22, it would be well signposted. Get off at Kinsale Road and just follow the signs. If you're parking up for a few days book in online as it'll be a little cheaper.

Total chaos coming in from East Cork. N25 is like a car park.

According to Irish rail website and their twitter account, Cork commuter services cancelled all day, and most intercity services cancelled or curtailed. Any link to everything being grand from 11am?

96FM just tweeted that Cork train drivers will go back to work at 11am.

Does anyone know if they will strike again tomorrow?I am booked on a 10 am train tomorrow from Heuston to Cork.
Edit:I booked a bus ticket just in case.

Those train drivers should be disciplined.

The dispute has nothing to do with the train drivers and so what if theres a bus stop next to Kent Station.

These people must think they are irreplaceable.

Because it was not the action of a single individual driver in reality there is very little that the management can do without stirring up a bigger row with union reps and other members of the trade union movement.

It is even possible that the managements own union would object to disciplinary action against members of a fellow trade union acting in a correct manner, ie. not passing pickets of a trade union in dispute at a specific location.

I would guess that a single train driver passing a picket where his fellow drivers did not would be in more trouble than those who did not pass the picket.

The sensible worker would consult with his shop steward or union rep before doing anything and then would go by his advice. Any confrontation with management would be referred to the union rep for decisions on what course of action to take.

It would be unfortunate but logical that the workers would be docked pay for not attending work, possibly on an hourly basis so nobody wins.

Nothing unfortunate about it. The strike has nothing to do with the train drivers.
I don't recall the buses not running when the train drivers were striking a few years back.

Very annoying for so many people who had little or no notice and many who have prepaid tickets who were badly inconvenienced and ended up having to also pay for alternative transport arrangements. Paying on the double.

This is the mind set that is on show and in action :

GoBé Cork Hi Carol, we had intended to run services as scheduled however when our first service at 06:30am this morning was due to depart, the driver and passengers was met by NBRU members who had left their picket and threatened our driver and passengers. On health and safety grounds a decision was made to suspend all services from Cork. The safety of our passengers and staff is our priority at all times.

Does anyone know if the Black Ash park and ride is still running while the strike is on? I know it's run by the city council but I think the the drivers are Bus Eireann.

Need to plan an alternative for getting to work tomorrow if it's closed!

    Why werent the Gardai called?

A similar incident happened a few years ago where Bus Eireann workers blocked a GoBe Bus from leaving.

    IMO they are thugs.

If that happened, then that's disgraceful. What about the concept of 'peaceful protest'?

Are there pickets outside the Aircoach stop in Cork or have they gone on strike too ?

Doubt it. Aircoach is a private company. I would imagine they're having a bumper week of bookings.

They didn't join the strike - Bus Eireann workers picketed Irish Rail and Dublin bus. Supposed to be illegal to do it, so that's probably why they didn't last. I think Dublin Bus and Irish rail would be entitled to sue the Bus Eireann union for money's lost if the secondary pickets continued.

I support the Bus Eireann strike - although it is a pain in the backside for me - but I think spreading it to trains and Dublin Bus etc. is a mistake. It will not be seen as a fair fight by commuters if that happens. I know that the government want to privatise everything, but public transport services are as important to most people as water accession, and many less well off people need expressways service for hospital and work purposes. If they become privately run companies I can see fares skyrocketing, and like many things in the country the service will be operated by only a few. Look what happened to the garbage collection in Dublin. It is poorly run and expensive. Well that's my rant done for today.

The problem is the fares are constantly going up. I have a 35 minute journey to work and it's nearly 20 euro for a return ticket. I can park all day for 9euro. I prefer getting the bus as I can read or whatever but the prices are crazy. This is made worse by the amount of people using travel passes (nor talking oaps here) and they're off into town to go shopping (for non essental items). Give em a reduced rate fair enough, but free is not sustainable

A huge problem with buses in Ireland is the drivers. A huge amount of them have no skills in customer service, some barely have basic manners or communication skills.

On top of that (and maybe linked to above somewhat) it's not possible to rely on bus schedules to get you where you need to be, on time.

And finally the price. Often much too expensive. I suppose the people that actually pay fares are subsidising the huge amount of free pass people.

Let the company go bust and start again with civil drivers.

I'd have to agree with this. Some of them make no effort at all. In fact, I'd have to say that and many of the non Irish drivers I have come across tend to be far more personable and professional in their approach to their jobs.

It's the same as any job. There are good and bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

I think the drivers make very little difference to the problem at all. If I have to get a bus I'll get it, regardless of whether he's a dickhead or the soundest guy on earth, or whether he's Irish or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,987 ✭✭✭mikeym

Bus Eireann might aswell be scrapped and a new bus company should be setup.

The unions wont budge and the only option is to give a huge cash injection to Bus Eireann at the tax payers expense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,950 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

Why can't they protest in a way that doesn't affect the public or risk turning public mood against them, like a 'no fares' protest??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

Yeah it's become a bit of a balls alright, I'm going to have to pay for a cab from Ballincollig to Cork and then back again, that's €40 down the drain.
