I was wondering if anyone has seen anything similar, I was up the attic at the weekend and noticed these weird looking things over in the eaves at the gable side of the house.

I may be wrong... but that looks like a wasps nest to me.

They can come to inhabit vacant nests, so might be an idea to get it removed.

I don't think they re-use them, they build a new one each spring. If they're empty now, they'll stay empty. Though that small one looks like it might be a new one under construction (this is the time of year the queens come out of hibernation).

Spot on! Good to know... should have Googled first!
"Normally wasps and hornets will build a new nest each year. On occasion a new nest is built next to an old one; this is simply due to the location being the ideal situation for a wasp nest. Wasps prefer to nest in dry, dark and undisturbed places, which is why they use loft spaces so often."
