No word. I asked them on twitter and no response. I would think it is up there with M&S at this stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Vanquished

They removed "Limerick soon" from their twitter account bio recently.

This would be their third aborted/botched attempt at opening here. They look like a pack of spoofers at this point!

Definitely! At this stage, I'd much prefer it if Treaty City Brewing opened up a place of their own, and maybe supplement their own beer with other craft beers.

I asked them about it on twitter in like December or January and they said that they would have an announcement in the next week or two. Still waiting. I don't really care anymore to be honest :pac:

Maybe they are making the right decision and maybe reviewing their current operations.

I have been in Oslo, their bar in Salthill, a couple of times over the last few months and if I were them I would be disappointed with how it was being run and the service .

It would be great if Treaty City opened a pub in the city centre. They're a fairly fledgling business so they'll have to be careful before making a move like that.

Love the name of their new creation - Hell's Gate. Pity the Council is planning on building a huge steel bridge across Hell's Gate though

I wonder if the reaction on here and other social media got them to change their mind. All of their proposed locations had obvious issues (nothing has ever had decent success in the old Crafty Fox in the last 10 years, etc) which were pointed out pretty much straight away.

They changed their head brewer last year as well. That might have changed their priorities for a while too.

Whatever about the Galway Bay crowd, one of the lads who ran The Blind Pig is renovating the old Daffy's pub on Catherine Street and hopes to open later in the year. Work is going on at the moment.

Can't comment on how it is doing in general, as I've only been there 6/7 times, but those times I was there it was always busy.

It's been fairly busy every time I've been in there. But I'd say the overheads are huge too.

Where is Daffy's? Is it where Bourkes used to be?

I think it's a few blocks up from there. Possibly next to the old High Stool?

No, it's on the block before that as you're going out of town on the right. It used to be a great place about 10 or 15 years ago.

Ah Daffys "International" bar, way ahead of the curve, if i remember correct, you used to able to get all sorts of beers in there shortly before the craft revolution....(same kind of stuff that the Bierhaus in Galway had at the time), I also have some vague memories of them remaining open very, very late.....provided you took your drinks to the basement!

The new GBB bar will be called The Wickham Tap.

Here's a link to the tweet
    from the other week.

Delighted to see progress being made there. We'll have a lovely little triangle of bars in the area now with Mickey Martin's and Mother Mac's both nearby as well.*

(* I know there's a Flannery's on Wickham Street too, and the Still House on Thomas Street, and near the corner of High Street, before anyone points them out. :P )

I think it's a great location. The public realm upgrade works on Thomas Street have breathed new life into that part of town. It's probably our nicest street and a good template for what the other streets of Limerick could be. I think places like The Wickham Tap or Flanagans restaurant, The Old Firestation, etc, if this hadn't been done. Wickham Street itself is crying our for upgrade work and I hope the Council see that you could have a street of nice shops, caf?s and restaurants there instead of a thoroughfare for cars.

It was AWESOME!! you could ring the lads anytime up to 4.00 in the morning and be escorted down the alley way, in the side gate and up the stairs to the Mecca!!!
It was mighty, remember going in there on night after the Sin Bin and walking out the following morning around 800 am..
The mix of people was incredible, definitely an eclectic mix if ever there was one
    HALCYON days😁

For all intents and purposes it was Limerick's version of a speakeasy. Was there one Friday night when the cops raided it. It was one of the nights when the owner had sent a bus up to Gort to pick up about 50 Brazilian people to bring back to Limerick and give the place a bit of an exotic vibe. Anyway, some time after midnight the Gardai forced their way in and down to the basement and pandemonium ensued. A stream of Brazilains, maybe many of them with visa issues, jumped over tables and legged it out the back and into the lanes of Limerick.

many a night everyone quiet as a mouse looking at the tv screen as it showed the cctv images of the guards knocking on the front door.

    Happy times

Gerry Powers, you forgot Gerry Powers and Norberts.
They'd probably suit a Bermuda Triangle better though.

Set to open on the 4th of july, the outside of the pub is finished off and looks totally different. Cant wait for it to finally open, so looking forward to my first pint in there.

Excellent! I was in the Oslo in Salthill on Monday, and the Salt House on Tuesday. It'll be great to have something like them closer to home.

    Will it affect Mother Macs?
The owners/management of Galway bay Brew were handing cards to some barstaff in Nancys did not go down well

There's room for a lot of these bars, great to see a bit more choice beer wise in Limerick.

Lots of people don't go drinking on school nights so finding pubs quiet in midweek is pretty normal.

The Wickham Tap will be a craft beer bar only and there's no other bars like it in Limerick. I doubt there'll be much midweek action but how many Limerick pubs do much trade during the week. Thursday through to Sunday will be the bar's focus.

Mother Macs springs to mind?! They pride themselves on their craft beer selection, have a rotational tap, and frequently have craft beer brewers in to give talks.

Ya they have a good craft selection, and the Meet the Brewer nights are great but they also stock the regular beers; Heineken and Guinness and such, so they appeal to more than just craft beer drinkers. The Wickham Tap wont be stocking Heineken etc and will appeal to craft beer drinkers only. They will also have more than 1 rotational tap.

Best of luck to them all...bettwr than empty units...but I still don't get the craft beer thing. Most of them taste rank to me to be honest but each to their own and all that.

It's just beer made properly, to be honest. Decent ingredients in higher concentrations. Some hoppy, some malty, some sour, some strong, some light, some a mixture. It's no mystery.

Guinness is just one example of a stout. Heineken is just one example of a lager. There's always been a wider variety available internationally, but now we're starting to catch up with it in Ireland too.

I know all that, I've yet to find one I think is nice I suppose. I'll stick to my Peroni for now.

Opening this evening, anyone heading in? Unfortunately I'm stuck at work but i will definitely be in there this weekend, hopefully they'll still have some 200 Fathoms left. Looks good from the pics that ive seen and some of those pics also show that there's 19 different tap on offer. It took a long time for them to open this bar but its gonna be well worth the wait.

I'm planning to head in at some stage anyway. Was trying to find out the opening time from the Facebook page but couldn't see one. Might see if they've said anything on Twitter instead.

It is a bit like the kind of food so many people were raised on before the Celtic Tiger era - bland, boiled to death and very plain ordinary food.

The Irish palate was generally not used to cuisine from around the world where flavour and spices were the norm.

Now look at what we have to choose from - food from all over the world, full of flavour and cooked in a way that isn't just boiled.

Craft Beer is a little like that. Guiness and Heineken on the other hand are the mashed spuds and boiled veg of 80's Ireland.

And many people haven't yet got the palate to appreciate beer with a flavour.

In your opinion. Taste is very subjective.

Sorry but that is the snobbiest load of codswollop I've read in a long time. Its beer, you either like it or you don't. You also have no idea how developed or otherwise anyone's palate is.

That is exactly the kind of drivel that drives me nuts about craft beer and one of the reasons stopped going to the likes of the blind pig...and will be unlikely to go to Galway bay. Each to their own and all that but waffling about peoples palates not being good enough to appreciate beer is kind of laughable.

Jesus I hope this place just doesn't end up being another typical place for Hipsters drinking their "craft beer" from jars and spouting tripe about what is and what isn't a good beer. Comical stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 159 ✭✭JoeLapira

Why does everyone just associate Craft Beer to Hipsters. Myself and a lot of the people i know who are into craft beer are far from Hipsters, and by the way they wont be serving drink in jars. In fact its normally just hipsters who are the ones enforcing the craft beer snobbery on people and alot of them barely know what they are talking about. I for one have no problem with those who dont like craft beer, its their choice and I also enjoy the occasional pint of Bud or Guinness depending on my mood but in my opinion the are so many beers better than the 2 i mentioned but each to their own. Its great for Limerick to have a place to go for craft beer enthusiasts, along with Mother Macs, and hopefully it succeeds and becomes a long standing member of the Limerick pub scene.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 402 ✭✭Exeggcute

The knee-jerk hyperventilating in response to my daring to mention the word palate is precisely the perfect example of the inverse snobbery and ignorance prevalent in Ireland.

It is not snobbery to explain why so many people in Ireland react with disgust to craft beer because of the strong taste. It is a simple fact. They are not used to it because they've been accustomed to a severely limited range of lager and beer offered by multinationals.

Do you think it is a coincidence that the like of Budweiser, Heineken, Carlsberg and Guinness are all popular and all notoriously bland in flavour?

That is a deliberate thing on behalf of the brewery - bland appeals to a wider range of consumers.

That is is why Guinness has been significantly altered over the years to "water down" its flavour profile. The Guinness with the most flavour is the Foreign Extra Stout - the one that is exported.

I like my Budweiser just as much as the next guy, but the attempts to associate craft beer and why it is different with hipsters and snobs is just pure tripe spouted by people who don't know what they are talking about.

The usual Irish attitude to sneer at anything that dares to deviate from the herd.

Well it was more in reference to the comment about not having the palette for appreciating beer if you drink Guinness or Heineken than the establishment itself. The comment seems to fit the stereo type imo.
