New Volkswagen Arteon - replacement for the CC.

This is the CC's replacement 4 door coupe, just launched at Geneva. Like it's predecessor the CC, it's based on an extended version of the Passat platform:

    volkswagen-arteon-elegance-1.jpg?itok=miKVagmO

    volkswagen-arteon-elegance-11.jpg?itok=Kcgfehwb

    volkswagen-arteon-r-line-3.jpg?itok=QwjXptTf

Front profile reminds me very much of the Audi R8 while the side profile is similar to the A7, rear has a similar profile to the original CC. Interior looks like it has been taken straight from the regular Passat except for the updated infotainment system from the facelifted Golf. It's a bit the interior wasn't a bit more adventurous.

    Essentially a poor mans A7.

Design-wise it looks like a blatant ripoff of the Renault Talisman

I like the exterior but it is a pity they didn't spend a bit more to make the interior more premium and less like regular passat.
pricing will be key as one report says they are putting it up against 5 series/merc e class. if they do that it will be a rare sight.

    It's pretty ugly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

I like it. I also like the interior of the current passat. It can look very decent with good spec.
I have experience of driving back to back a loaded bmw x5 m50d and a passat highline both with white leather. The passat was not massively inferior. Biggest difference was sound proofing.

Yeah, they both have 4 doors and 4 wheels!

Hillarious but if you can't see more of a resemblance than that you'd best try Specsavers!

Have seen claims of a certain model of a new car looking like an existing model of car on this forum for far less similar looking designs.

If it was a Renault that heavily resembled a VW you'd have all the fingers pointing..

Edit: in addition to 4 door and 4 wheels i would also quickly notice the sloping c pillar the almost identical front light clusters, the chromed grill slats and the suspiciously similar chrome qurter panel detail which runs into the drivers door, the heavy lower indent on the bottom of the doors... although i guess some people just see 4 wheels and 4 doors ;)

They are saying this will be pitched against the BMW 4 Series GC which means it will be pitched against their own Audi A5 SP too but unsurprisingly no mention of that.

    Engines will be:
    petrol - 1.5 litre 150bhp, 2.0 litre 190bhp and 280bhp
    diesel - 2.0 litre 150bhp, 190bhp and 240bhp

I love the exterior but the interior is very bland Imo. In 3-5 years I would certainly consider a used one but I would imagine to get one it would have to be a UK import as I don't see too many selling. It is very hard for any car to head towards the three German prestige marque's in price and break the badge snobbery of many potential buyers.

Will the 280 make it to Ireland? There is no 2l TSI Passat here.. only the 1.4?

I know its only a design model but look at the size of the air vent on the passengers side!

That's what a normal Passat has.

That's how the passat dash is. It's not a continuous air vent.

Ah, I probably should've sat into a new Passat before commenting :pac:

Don't think I'd be a huge fan of this new Arteon if the front looks the same as their design model.

That is the production model, it's not a concept.

Regarding engines, I'd say we will see the 1.4 petrol and the rest will be 2.0 dervs. Will be interesting though to see if a PHEV makes an appearance at some stage since they already have the running gear in the Passat GTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

VW are gone mad altogether with the parts sharing. That interior is worse than a 90s Corolla for parts sharing.

Steering wheel, handbrake button, start button, climate control switchgear, gear shifter and light switch lifted straight from any and every VW made after 2013.

It'd be nice if something in there wasn't from everything else, to make it a bit spesh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,795 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

This 2.0 diesel across the board is getting very annoying.
Surely they will release some proper engines in that or at least a phev with the 2.0L petrol instead of the 1.4 in the passat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I read there was talk of a 3.0 litre petrol engine for the PHEV but with the Passat GTE drivetrain already available it's hard to see them passing on it initially anyway. If the market for these type cars in PHEV starts replacing declining diesel sales then I can see there being more choice among PHEV cars.

Ok, so I have read a few more articles / posts across the web about the Arteon and lo and behold it turns out I'm not the only one who noticed the uncanny resemblance with the Renault Talisman...

The Renault undoubtedly took some styling cues from other German cars.

Do you want a medal or something? I dislike the way any new car has to be a copy of something according to some people.

No, but some agreement or at least a bit of discussion around the design instead of dismissive comments that it shares only "4 wheels and 4 doors" would have been nice :)

There's a chance it will, skoda sell the 280 superb which isn't a car that would have been imported years ago.

Wonder how many 280 Superbs have been sold?

As for the Arteon, I think the engines are a bit un-interesting tbh.

As VW's "Flagship" I think it should have a more "exotic" engine for its top of the line model... a 3.0 V6 TFSI or Bi-Turbo TDI V6 would've been nice (But obviously Vag don't want the Arteon to tread too close to A5 territory)

Jesus wept. The Talisman was unveiled in July 2015. Months earlier, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, VW released the 'Sport Coupe Concept GTE' as a vehicle to demonstrate the their new 'design language'. The Arteon is pretty much a carbon copy of this concept - from the outside anyway. VW did not rip off Renault design. Clearly.

First VW to make me sit up and take notice for years, and I own one. Nice.

I can only imagine the boardroom battle to get that wing/door swage line detail incorporated. Very un-VW.

Is that a sort of clamshell bonnet, as in does it intersect the wheel arch or is that just how it looks?

I love the back but the front is too similar to Peugeot 508. Good spot as I would have taken it to be just another Passat at first glance.

R-Line 2.0 TSI 4-Motion with 280HP and 7 Speed DSG is currently listed on the German VW site for ~50k.

Did you do a comparison to a same spec Passat?

Highline Passat with the 280ps is 46k, but has a 6 speed DSG. R-Line Arteon with the 280ps is 50k but and has the 7 speed.

€4k is a bit rich for an extra cog!! :pac:

Indeed, although the Arteon also get's dynamic chassis control in the R-Line while that's an option on the Passat. There's probably other differences as well, but my German is very rusty.

Ah no , i was only being pedantic.

4k is not a huge price difference to pay between a Passat and Arteon even if they were like for like IMO but with the extra features/spec it closes the gap even further.

Will be interesting to see the price difference over here.

    Which one would you prefer - a fire-tested 6-speed DQ250 or a new(ish) 7-speed DQ381?

I think it looks quite well - although I'd avoid the TDI's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,654 ✭✭✭kyote00

Probably because the gearbox could fall out under the car and VW will call it consumable
    OSI wrote: »
With 3 years of warranty covering your arse, why wouldn't you go for the 7 speed?

Nice looking car, but not sure about the front end... would like to see it in the metal. Rear end looks great.

99% of sales will be one of the TDi variants...

    FYP

Product guide has been released, but isn't up on VW.ie yet for some reason.

    All 2.0Tdi versions on the initial release - 150,190 & 240hp.

    Starts from ?43,295 ex. Works

Pretty decent standard spec on the entry model, lots of tech stuff and 18's, but cloth interior. Elegance model gets Alcantara/Leather, R-Line still doesn't get full leather, but gets 19's and Sports Seats with Alcantara/Leather.

Shade under 56k for the 240hp DSG 4Motion R-Line - not sure many of those are going to be sold.

They've sold a few standard Passat's with that engine. Mickey_32 on here has one? A serious weapon I'd say!

What is the consensus on price then? €44k odd for entry level? Wonder will they do good finance rates to get it off the ground?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

It's a good bit cheaper than the A5 Sportback anyway. I'd say standard trim is probably higher too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,742 ✭✭✭carsfan2

It's a pity they didn't change the interior more from the standard Passat.
The exterior is pretty and I could see the 150/190 hp versions selling well if low rate pcp available.

Not once new A5 Sportback 2.0TDI 150 engine is released from June onwards. There probably wont be more than 2-3k in it which is just too close.

If they priced Arteon from late thirties it would have done great. Its probably 4k overpriced.

The vw will likely look more exotic that the a5 sportback though because that new A5 in 4 door form looks poor to me.

There's no such thing as a new car bargain.

If a finance deal is the main sales driver the product can't be great.

VW are bringing left hand drive versions around the dealers at the moment.
Bob flavin has a video up of the cars in naas. Looks nice.
Left field alternative to 5 series e class etc. Maybe.
