    With your money.
I like the look of the new Hyundai Tucson.
Plenty of power and can seat 5 comfortably and the back seats fold for more boot storage. You could find a few bags of meal or feet in there.
    They do look good too.

I changed my car before Christmas and was looking for something similar, 2t towing puts you into 4wd territory €€€€ in most of the suvs or opting for the higher powered versions in some of them. Best I could find was vw tiguan new model 2.0tdi 150bhp has 2t towing but still only 2wd. I'm getting 48mpg short trips and 55mpg on longer steady runs. What's your budget?

legal towing capacity wouldn't be near 2 toone

Ah well there goes my suggestion. Maybe muckit could get a smaller trailer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,207 ✭✭✭99nsr125

    A double cab pickup

Rear seats mostly only good for kids

I don't know of any cars with a heavy enough duty rear axle for what you require.

    Only Jeeps, 4x4s and Vans

Done a good few miles in a D-Max, like em, better than Hi-Lux in my opinion

    Not affiliation
    Just an example

Budget?! We'll find the money somewhere! It would be 3-4year old machine, prob €20k max l would be thinking of. I like the look of the tiguan and wouldn't have thought about it.

My wife has a 2015 passat and from the plate on the door pillar I think it is rated to tow 2 tonne.

Yes, 2025kg is the maximum trailer design gross weight allowed (must be braked).

However on such Passat BE licence is required to tow anything heavier than 1370kg design gross weight.

Plenty crew cabbed cruisers, pajeros out there. Don't bother with those jeep cars e.g Dacia dusters.

Have an early model Tiguan, 09' 2.0TDi 140 bhp, it's a really nice drive and decent towing capacity, mine is the 4motion 4wd model, economy is ok'ish 43mph over 10k kms with occasional towing.
Boot space isn't big but otherwise it's a practical compromise between a family vehicle and a tow vehicle.

OP look at Skoda Octavia Scout, they're a Skoda version of the Allroads, AWD, 150bhp, estate space for the family and good towing capacity. Scarse but worth considering. I test drove one and loved it, just couldn't strike a deal and Cavan men love a deal.

The volkswagens tiguan and passat seem to be the two best contenders. I wouldn't be towing 24/7 but when l do, l want to be above board. I said "vehicle" in title as don't particularly want a diesel gussling passenger jeep.

Pajeros and cruisers aren't jeeps  the dmf in the Passat won't take box work.

You know what I mean, 4x4. I've been borrowing the oul lads pajero but he's going back to a small car now that he's retired.
I wouldn't be on the road with the trailer all the time so it will more than do my needs.

New Tiguan 2.0 4motion is rated for 2500kg

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,203 ✭✭✭Jack the Stripper

Are they rated for Irish roads hilly conditions etc, farm yard lanes covered in cow **** where traction is an issue? Correct me if I'm wrong but it's road tyres on them new Tiguans?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 875 ✭✭✭f140

dont mind your Tiguan. Go away and pull out a Toureag passenger. Get the cheap tax and you will be sorted. Constant 4wd . Towing ability of 3.5 tonne. You wont know that 8x5 is behind you. Do it in luxury and forget about the rest. No point battling with a half arsed thing wondering if you will make it up that mucky passage or get stuck half way up.

I don't know if they have cow ****e in Germany, but that's what they're rated for.

Of course they wouldn't be as capable as a proper traditional off reader.

I wasn't knocking your suggestion Colm it's just this rated thing and real world don't stack up a lot of the time. Ford rangers and l200s come to mind but anyway different sceal.
It ticks the box anyway and wife be happy collecting kids from school as got the reg. this pcp has brought on a lot of competition.

Rav 4 boss. On our second one here 2.2 all wheel drive 570 tax. Wife loves it and i steal it for the Mart. Pulls 10x5 with 4 500kg cattle no bother. Plenty of comfort and extra bit of height to see what the neighbours got in the mart over the walls. Might be a bit on the old side 2012 and under. Not as impressed with new model.

Are you legal at that? What weight is the trailer?

I don't need a work horse. I can hardly get a pair of wellies up my field at times!! This will be on concreted yard and the road only.

I won't be getting bigger box. Have tractor trailer for that. Besides, I'd prefer the repayments on the tiguan over the toureag!

I'd have the same idea. This will be the wife's bus and l'll rob it when I need a hitch. I didn't think the rav4 was rated for towing like that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Yeah the 2.2 4x4 is rated at 2000kg.
Later models are 4x4 in petrol hybrid or 2.0 diesel in 2wd

Ara its probably not. But its able for that anyway. 3 x 500 would prob be the limit weight wise. Its just handy for trailer work when needed and a comfortable family car.

Often pull the 12 by 5 and 25 lambs here with our Rav 4, nice car, 2 litre no AWD

People shouldn't need guards to know to tax a jeep.
Lazy attitude blaming PS all the time, but wouldn't expect anything better at this stage.

The story I heard about the jeep was that was a farm jeep and the usual jeep for carrying the milk to the creamery wouldn't start so they chanced going to the creamery with that one.

Now, can we get back to discussing Muckits options on buying a vehicle for himself?

    Thanks!

Tis all fun and games until you have an insurance claim. Then you wont be long finding out if your legal.Very few of the mid size SUV type jeeps can tow 2000 kgs.

I know this going off topic, but do creameries still accept milk like that?

Have jeep here. Rarely use it for cattle anymore, is it just meal and hardware you want to move or an odd bullock? Just wondering could you do without? Or buy a tidy 10k car and the pajero off the old lad. I know lads say that they couldn't justify a second yoke but you can justify 20k on a 'car'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 436 ✭✭annubis

alot of pickups coming with smaller engines now, current hilux is 2.4, there is a 2.0L ford ranger available i think and the previous amarok is 2.0l and is very capable to tow but nice to drive. I changed from landcruiser to hilux because i wanted to be able carry kids etc, no probs towing and a good deal lighter on fuel than cruiser

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭Green farmer

A secondhand E class will be rated at 2 tonne. If you want 7 seater family car, current version vw Sharon / seat Alhambra are rated at between 2 tonne to 2.2 tonne.

That lad is a Lee Strand supplier, the majority of their milk is delivered each day like that and is in the shops next morning. Only a very few really big suppliers have milk collected for them.

Choice is limited when looking for a family vehicle that will legally tow 2 ton and still be fairly fuel efficient. You are nearly limited to SUV's with 4wd capability. The Toyota RAV is about the best the only other that is available with out going into fuel guzzlers is a Ford Kuga. Most of these are listed up near 40k. One issue with earlier kuga's is the independent suspension at the rear can wear tyres.

Looking at costing you buy a 9-10 year old 2.2d 4wd for less than 5k. You could convert it to a commercial fairly easy. This would open up the car market to you. Remember that this Jeep will be a once off cost other than tax, insurance fuel etc. Another choice in older vehicles is a mid sized van that are rated to pull over 2 ton. With the tightening up of towing law etc we are nearly at the stage where you may have to have a specific vehicle for towing even on smaller farms.

Muckit if going for new option the RAV is about your best choice.. A second hand older vehicles opens up options
