Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone know what reg they are giving out for 87+ classic cars? I know south Tipperary is 87TS800x but can't find any info on Waterford county and city.

Slightly, or actually totally off topic,  but I'm going to ask nevertheless, anyone any idea as to why Waterford and Limerick have a seperate letter for the city and rest of the county. It's not that these cities are so large, that they require a seperate number batch. Why not Cork, Wexford and Galway? And the other odd one out is Tipperary, I mean, how many people live in Tip for it to be needing Tip North and South!!!??

    It's a good question Paul!

Afaik, it's historically-based on the relevant cities/counties having separate county council (and electoral?) areas.

As you are probably aware, Tipperary now uses one letter 'T' for the whole county (this only applies to new vehicles registered since 1-1-14).

Likewise, Limerick now only uses 'L' and Waterford only uses 'W'.

As said by Silvera, it's nothing to do with numbers. It's to do with local government. Here's the longer version...

Cork County Borough & Cork County merged their car registration offices in 1974, and use C for the whole lot
Galway City became a County Borough and combined 1985 so use G
Dublin (Dublin Corporation & Dublin County Council) - D for the whole lot as they were unified.
    Limerick City - L
    Waterford City - W

Those five are single letter because they were County Boroughs.

Local government changes in 2014 resulted in:

Limerick City Council (L) and Limerick County Council (LK) merged to become Limerick City and County Council - L
North Tipperary County Council (TN) and South Tipperary County Council (TS) merged to become Tipperary County Council - T
Waterford City Council (W) and Waterford County Council (WD) merged to become Waterford City and County Council - W

L, LK, TN, TS, W, WD still get issued for pre-141 plates as per old arrangements.

That roughly makes sense of it, with the following anomalies:

When Dublin got divvied up in 1994 into Dublin City Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council. They never in the end allocated new codes for each administrative area. (something they should have done to avoid telephone number length serials)

Combining TN and TS should result in a two-letter TY, because Tipperary isn't a County Borough.

If you live in County Waterford you have the choice of W or WD
