Seriously, it's "mam or ma", NOT fucking mum or mom. You are NOT American and you are NOT British. To a certain extent, I can understand mum being uttered ... but mom .....?? fuck right off you transatlantic **** bag.

If you're American or British living in Ireland, then fine, otherwise say MAM or MA!

    This is Ireland.

Most of how Irish people speak is British English tinged with some Americanisms. And a tiny bit of hiberno English.

    Why concentrate on this?

It is usually homophobia or racism that causes such passionate statements. On an issue like this it boggles the mind.

    Mammy
My brother and sister both say "Maaa" and it gets more pronounced when they have a few drinks in them.
However I have discovered that if I reveal to others in our company that the "Maaaa" will get worse as they have a few, the company will start taking the p**s out of them so they stop saying it!:D
Now how to stop the everyday use of it? :(

Of all the possible prejudices to hold this is bizarre, kind of like hating people for a having different coloured socks. Just won't have it, just won't.

My 5 year old son has autism and speech delay so when he talks he sounds very proper and calls me mummy...its cute

My 3 year old says "mam"

    I have 2 complete opposites

I would rather be called mummy than mam.

    Each to their own

    Mum
    Egyptians say Mummy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 255 ✭✭foxatron

Ive been giving this some thought. I personally only say Mam, it would never feel right to say mom or mum. The furthest variant of this would be when I need to communicate with her but she is not in close proximity, it then changes to "Maaaaaaaaaaaam"

my sister in law has four teenage sons, none of whom are even capable of wiping their own arses let alone making themselves something to eat or drink.

It sounds like the Welsh valleys in their house at times.

We live where the accent is quite flat. Cork biy.

So you can see why I prefer mummy.
My youngest talks like his daddy
My eldest has my posher tone

We weren't allowed to call her anything else other than Mum. She'd smack you if you did.

    Mum
I say 'mammy'. This would probably also displease the OP.

Lots of Irish say 'mum' and always did. Lots of Irish people have an English parent too.
