I have been saying for years that I must binge watch it because I know it's a show that I'd like but just haven't got round to it.

When i see pictures of James Gandolfini, he is not yet Tony Soprano in my mind. I think of Virgil from True Romance.

Soproanos was not even the best thing on HBO.

Truth told I'm not a nexflixer/ Boxsetter. But yes The Sopranos is defo the best bar none. (except maybe Frasier, says him who's about to watch sky-plussed The Wire)..

I just finished watching seasons 4,5,6.. and it's very very good.. but, the kids and Carmella are just too ****ing whiny, it really becomes a pain to have to watch their scenes which don't even go anywhere

Also Janice. She's great at making herself hated, but because she never really gets a comeuppance she just becomes annoying.

I'm conflicted between Sopranos and Breaking Bad as to which one is my own favourite.

it pales in comparison to the character depth and complex overarching narratives of Red Rock.

I haven't seen any of the shows mentioned so far bar Breaking Bad.
I'm on season 2 of that.

I find generally the shows that people tend to harp on about are overrated.

Enjoying Breaking Bad so far but not the masterpiece that people claim it to be.

The Larry Sanders show is one of the greatest of all time

How can you say it's not a masterpiece and you haven't finished watching it all yet?

IMO from season 3 it really takes off.

Reserve your judgement till you have finished and see do you change your mind. 😉

If I was a mafia kingpin with millions in illicit cash to hide away, the fcuking paperboy would come up my fcuking drive with the fcuking paper!
    Killed the show for me.

I can have an opinion on what I've seen so far.
It might change as time goes on but I can still have one.

The Sopranos was great but it also killed two other great shows that should have been given their third and final seasons, Deadwood and Carnivale. HBO robbed the budget for the other shows to pump into The Sopranos

the Soprano's is brilliant but I think The Wire and The Shield were better.

The Shield is massively underrated , Michael Chiklis performance is brilliant and the season with Forrest Whittaker is one of the great duels in television history.

Season 2 of The Wire is the greatest season in the history of television.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,058 ✭✭✭Unearthly

It was way ahead of anything else at its time. I'd probably hold The Wire ahead of it. That didn't get dragged down with family drama for the most part

Going through it all again for the god knows how many time. On season 2 at the minute. The simmering beef between these two in that season is brilliant

Yea for me the wire was better, though I did like the sopranos, wasn't to much gone on breaking bad, maybe my expectations went to high.

I love that show. If you haven't watched Justified yet, do. Walton Goggins is even better in that than in The Shield.

The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Band of Brothers.

I don't put too much thought into which of them I preferred, they were all fantastic. Choosing a favourite doesn't matter really.

Must give Justified a watch. It's based on an Elmore Leonard book and I love Elmore Leonard so, I'll put it on my list.

Goggins was brilliant in the Shield.Just such a complete asshole.

Surprised that no one has mentioned The West Wing yet - great writing from Aaron Sorkin, seasons 2 and 3 are some of the best TV ever made.

The Wire season 2 is top drawer stuff too. McNulty is one of all time favourite characters.

Started that on Friday. Im halfway through season 2. Very good show. Heard it gets better to

Sopranos follows by the wire. Breaking bad, I just don't understand the hype behind it. I don't think it features in the same breath of great tv shows

Justified is excellent, another really good show is Banshee - it can be very violent, but is also top drawer.

The Soprano's The Wire, brilliant shows, but for me, HBO's OZ is a masterpiece

If you havent seen it, I would highly reccomend it.

The Sopranos, Frasier. Seinfeld, Curby, Withnail and I, then maybe Breaking Bad. There are nine settings on my oven. I use one. Why use an apostrophe when quoting dates e.g. 1980's? (it should be the 1980s. and yes I'm bored).

    Fraser was class.

Anyhow GOT is better than sopranos and The Wire.

    Top five:

    The Wire
    The Sopranos
    Mad Men
    Rectify
    Band of Brothers

I think those five are the pinnacle, with The Wire being the absolute pinnacle.

    Honorable mentions:

Deadwood, Breaking Bad, Arrested Development, Game of Thrones, The Office (UK)

We are really lucky in that we are truly living in the Golden Age of TV, it's incredible the amount of brilliant content that's been churned out this century.

I have never watched the Sopranos because the lovable ole mobster type never appealed to me and never will.

You need to watch it so. There's so much of the series where I hated tony

Loved the Sops. Christopher was my favourite character. Loved Ralphie and Steve Buscemi's character too. Hated Janice, also hated AJ but he was good in the last series or two. I'm still upset that JG is gone, I don't really care when celebs die but that was and still is really sad. I watched the Sops as it was on TV over the years, before I knew how to watch online etc, and for an hour a week it was total escapism for me to a world of gangsters and strippers and cannoli. RIP James G.

I presume you have seen Breaking Bad? It's a slow burner. I think it will be one of those shows that gets better as it goes on

    Oh yes, very much so.

On the original question/ opinion - I'm a Wire fan, all the way. So far ahead of the rest it just isn't true. I enjoyed the Sopranos, but it's not as good as the Wire.
