Interview with Eamon about the parking of The Stand.

It's all.positive really, and he's personality is still there.

Glad to see he's stepping backnand feeling positive doing it rather than saying he just doesn't have the energy anymore.

Really sad news. Like many of us, I grew up with Eamon on RTE doing the football coverage. He was always the heart and soul of those proceedings, usually injecting abit of divilment into a drab post match analysis and often the one to start a "big picture" debate about the state of the game etc..…

The Stand has been top of my podcast list for years. Initially I found it a great outlet to keep tuning into the RTE panel long after they left RTE but it soon became my No1 for current affairs analysis. A great bunch of contributers, my favourite probably being Chris Johns for the UK and Brexit coverage. Eamon always had that crucial skill shared by all top interviewers, he could adapt his list of topics and questions depending on what way the guest took the conversation. He was always 'on the ball' and sharp. He also always asked the most pertinent questions and wasn't afraid to admit when he hadn't a clue himself and needed the guest to spell it out for himself and the listener.

For me, it's going to be hard to find a pod to replace it for news and current affairs. The UK/US shows are ok for their own neck of the woods but there's no Irish angle to them. Plus with many of the others you know your getting an agenda, not any attempt to reveal unvarnished truth, as Eamon always tried to do.

A great pity, but by God, he had a good run. Like Charlie Haughey, he did the state some service! I look forward to his book and hope he might surprise us with a return of some kind in the future.

On days like this with the draft programme for government juat out you'd really miss Eamon. He would have someone on going through it along with the politics behind it. There really seems to be no real alternative.

YA agree, listen to Ivan & Matt but would not be big fan of Matt.

Some day in the US. And a raft of executive orders to come tomorrow. I'd love to hear what Stanage makes of it this week.

I listen to them too and generally enjoy their banter. But I get a real sense they only do it for the money and haven't much real passion for it unlike Eamon.

Wonder is he on any other pods across the water

Yeah, would love to hear their take on it all. Particularly Elon's 'gesture' this evening.

Stanage was the only one I really listened to after they discontinued the football pods

Definitely a gap in the market here. Yates plays the "shister" role well. I do find myself watching clips of Dunphy from the RTE days and Tonight with Vincent Browne - both at the top of their game. Political debate on radio and TV in Ireland in the main now is saturated with politicians deflecting until the allocated time slot has elapsed.

I miss Niall Stanage as well, and I hope somebody in Ireland or the UK will be able to hire him instead. The Stand was the only regular podcast he did. He was asked the question on Twitter after he posted about The Stand. His reply was "To answer a question asked by several, I do a lot of TV over here but no other regular podcast."

Dail suspended only an hour after coming back after the lengthy Xmas break. Dammit Eamon come back to us and give your take on this mess.

Nah, we need Vincent Browne for this one.

Sweet Lord but he might have passed out from the audacity that was being exhibited on all sides.

He would definitely have the full seething glare on his face when interviewing any TD.

As regards replacements - listened a bit to the Matt Cooper/ Ivan Yates one at the start... Initially found it good, but I eventually tired of Ivan: he's too obnoxious, trolling and calls things wrong all the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,522 ✭✭✭Westernview

Ivan is full of hot air alright, especially as he often makes out that he has the inside track. But I still enjoy them without taking them too seriously.

The Indo daily is ok bit the contributers may not be as interesting. Other than that I listen back to newstalk stuff.

Why did he stop doing the Stand?

He was a regular for a long time. But to be honest I grew tired of him anyway - trying to be a 'balanced' voice in the era of Trump. You can't 'balance' blatant criminality and facism.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭Seattle

I just read there that he parked the podcast. A little surprised at that - he could've just done irregular episodes. I suppose he's made enough money and doesn't need the commitment of it.

I have really enjoyed the Path To Power podcast. I think they have great chemistry and I quite like Yates insider shtick. I always have done.

It makes me harken back to the Last Word when Cooper had a decent amount of bite to him. His coverage of Trump and nearly everything since then has lack real substance. Yates with a nudge and a wink explicitly calls Cooper out a good bit when Cooper is towing the PC line.

Ivan's FG ear to the ground almost seems too overt. I'd say he has pints at the races with some leinster houser and gets all the gossip.

would love a podcast now on what is happening in Ukraine and Trump / Putin cosying up.

Why does he have to be so negative. I get criticism but some light must exist at the end of the tunnel!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭Lecter8319

Yah, I agree, it would be great to see what he and the majority of his contributors make of whats happened over the last month or so. I don't think Eamon or anyone thought it would be quiet as mad as this. Would gladly pay for it if he did return

He has left a huge void for sure. It's difficult to think of anyone who can cover the same range of topics and attract the same calibre of guests.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,411 ✭✭✭franglan

Even a weekly 30 min podcast with Stanage would fill this particular void. Which way are we walking to Ranelagh?😀

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭Lecter8319

Should start a protest outside his house😂😂

It truly is a sickener that he ended his podcast just as things started getting really crazy. Hopefully he finishes his book soon and considers giving it another go even if its on a part time basis.

    Be warned.

I know he was less regular but I would love to hear Tom Cloonan now also.

    Tom Cloonan (military tactics)

John Kampfner (German & UK viewpoint)

    Lara Marlow (France)

and of course Niall Stanage (Stateside).
