What's it like as a place to live?

Yeah the people are nice. If course you have to do a bit of work on it yourself. Join a club or sports your interested in. Get out and about the first few months and meet people.

Small ( about 6000 popltn,) but we and Irish Times readers like it.

Scenic area, beaches, mountains etc

Good road to Dublin - takes me 3 and a quarter hours. Improvements to last bit C'bar to Westport designed, cpo'd and will start one of these years

Good bus and train service

Cycle and walking path along old railway line Westport to Achill, with spur near Newport to Turlough Castlebar

Some choice of Primary Schools in town and immediate area.

Boys and Girls secondary schools

Full range of sporting activities.

Strong tourist centre - about 11 hotels plus selfcatering, good range of restaurants,coffee shops, pubs, shops etc.

Tidy Towns winner at least thrice in last 15 years, and close other years

At least three good bookshops ( important cultural indicator imho )

Well organised County Library branch

Natives reputed to be friendly, but avoid jokes about losing All Irelands. Wearing thin after 65 years

Safe place to rear children. Doubly welcome if they are good at GAA, Soccer or Rugby

I'm holidaying in Westport at the moment. It's a great town. In a scenic, stunning setting, beautiful and well laid out and friendly and helpful denizens.

One of the best towns in Ireland IMO.:)
