    Can anyone tell me if someone who is hard of hearing, i,e has to wear hearing aids could claim disability allowance.

    This person has severe hearing loss and has recently been issued with hearing aids.

    Thanks

    Thanks but that information is very vague, it fails to really tell you what the department consider acceptable;

    It states;

    Have an injury, disease or physical or mental disability that has continued or may be expected to continue for at least one year

    As a result of this disability be substantially restricted in undertaking work that would otherwise be suitable for a person of your age, experience and qualifications

    Naturally someone with severe hearing loss has a Physical disability that will continue for more than one year, as for the 2nd part its hard to say what they consider restrictive considerations. Someone with severe hearing loss would ultimately find it hard to hear people or noises, thus there options for work would be severely effected, but I am not sure if this would be accepted by the department.

    Looking for clarity or anyone who can confirm of similar cases and acceptance or refusal.

    Nobody can answer for sure , chance's are the application will be turned down on the first ,in saying that I know a person with 90% hearing loss and still got through college and on to full time employment after getting hearing aids

    It's not the disability that decides the claim its the individuals ability to work. The only way to find out is to apply.

    If the person can continue to work while using hearing aids then I doubt they would be considered unable to work and probably wouldn't be accepted.

    Do the hearing aids not improve their ability to hear and therefore the likelihood of them getting a job?

    Applicants make this mistake all the time, assuming that a diagnosis of a condition is the criteria for eligibility for DA.
    It's not.
    DA is , as already mentioned, a payment for a person who

    To qualify for Disability Allowance (DA) you must:

    Have an injury, disease or physical or mental disability that has continued or may be expected to continue for at least one year
    As a result of this disability be substantially restricted in undertaking work that would otherwise be suitable for a person of your age, experience and qualifications
    Be aged between 16 and 66. When you reach 66 years of age you no longer qualify for DA, but you are assessed for a State pension.
    Satisfy a means test
    Satisfy the habitual residence condition.
    The emphasis is on the substantially restricted from work.

    Does it actually say free travel or is it a public service card? Everyone will eventually have a public service card.

    Yeah I know that's why I was asking him/her which it was as it seems a bit odd they got a travel pass before the da was awarded.

    My Da started about 2 weeks after the letter but your travel pass is valid now.

    Go and enjoy visiting all the old friends that used to live too far away :)

    When the letter comes you will need to apply separately for household benefits (Fuel and TV licence)

    + living alone increase, if you live alone.

    Also fuel allowance is separate to household benefits, make sure to apply for both!

    No like your Jobseekers will end the week before your DA starts. You won't get both in the same week.

    Go and get your Jobseekers as usual on the Monday.
    If you've had a letter telling you to collect your DA on the Friday of the same week then just go and collect it and don't worry.
    You won't get any more then 188 for the week.
    The department will sort it out for you. Try not to worry

    JSA is paid a week in arrears. DA is paid in advance.

    I got both in the same week for one week only, in the first week of DA payment.

    You’ll only get DA if you can prove your hearing loss prevents you being suitable for any kind of work.
