General attitude of an Irish Team with a Non Irish Boss

Greetings all u leprechaun lovers , I am a citizen of India and I have been offered a position in Ireland (wont reveal the name of the company since my identity may be figured out in a public forum) it a senior tech role. The thing is I have experience teams, and have the experience and creds to prove it. And an Irish startup firm has hired me , i intend to take up the job , but here is my concern.
I have never actually lead a team with foreigners in my own country, but now I have been hired for a position in which the team I will be leading are all Irish Nationals, in our interviews I have had brief discussions with them, but as you are all aware the behavior we have in an office environment doesnt reflect our true nature.
Anyway getting to the point, I want to know to the good irish people, what is your thoughts of having a non irish boss ? I mean your honest opinions , would you feel at some level some resentment ? Generally speaking what is your opinion of working with an asian ?
I dont want to come off as being racist, Im just curious since the Europe is known to have ultra nationalistic ideals due to ongoing catastrophic migrant crisis there.
Oh and as a side note , what the protocol in hitting on Irish girls ?
    Thanks, DasBikq

People mostly don't care as long as you're not a jerk. (Like, obviously, we have racist people, same as everywhere) but that ultra-nationalist feeling isn't as rife in Ireland.
I mean, if we didn't hire foreign people, we'd have no tech economy.

(Same goes for the women with extra "don't be a jerk".)

I think you are right on that point: I find that irish people on average are somewhat passive-aggressive. First thing to learn is that "grand" means"ok, strictly ok".

Also how will you feel about having women in your team, and as colleagues and as higher level managers than you? Because on average I've found that some Indian men struggle with this.

Some of my best managers have been from overseas. If you're fair and reasonable you should be fine.

I've had mixed experiences of working with Indians, while they are usually very nice people they can sometimes be passive and servile, poor communicators and try to save face if something goes wrong until the last minute. I've also noticed problems with Indian men working with and taking direction from women.

Just be normal . Be professional fair and respect everyone on team equally and respects their opinion . Compliment them on good work and provide general constructive feedback. Never put them down and most definitely not in front of others.

I 'heard' Indias love Hierachy and demanding respect ( not sure how true this is ) but do not enter the position thinking your run the show ! Meet with the team as a whole then individually introduce yourself give a brief background history of your work experiences and then ask about theirs listen to them and ask questions about their skill set and their goals for their company and themselves

You are a team so act like it

I work with indias on a daily basis and I treat them the same as everyone else I respect them for good work and highlight bad work and how to improve (same as I would with Irish work people )

Best of luck and bring positively to the new role and enjoy the team effort

They will respect you more if you respect them

Sorry, there is no way you are Indian.

The colloquialism that you've used and phrases and general attitude presented here mean you are Irish .

    Thread fail.

Just talk to them as people, not Irish people, and you will be fine. No need to make a big thing out of the cultural differences. There are many non Irish working here, it's not a big deal, just do your job and you will be fine.

Having worked with Indian people in Australia id say you'll be fine. Give it a bit of time and go in with an open mind, you'll find its a lot more relaxed than what your used to.

Irish people tend to speak there mind more and wouldn't be short in questioning a decision they don't agree with. But sarcasm is huge here so get used to that too

Thanks man , your right it actually an asian thing , the higher up you are in the pecking order certain type of servile behavior is expected from the subordinates , that doesnt apply to the western culture which I am very aware of ,

this is how NOT to treat irish women or any other woman for that matter. women are not honeys! they are human beings that deserve respect all the time.

some good advice on this thread and best of look in the job. be aware, you may struggle with our weather

    ah you'll be grand dasbigdick

just take it easy with the oul gang rape at the xmas party ok, it's a real social faux pas, I know. who knew right.... let the quickie mart jokes just run off your back like Nile water and again you'll blend in.

don't be surprised if we ask you to ship a few kilos of pure uncut turmeric in from the motherland, we hate that powdered Tesco crap, it really gives our downward dog the trots. just be yourself and you'll be part of the cast in no time..that's casT with a T not and E!! we'll iron out those high societal notions for you in no time, you'll be carrying our luggage and driving a nightlink before you can say "2 rohypnol please"or as you educated Indians like to say Flunitrazepam!!!

    Probably

Not usually, I've worked with some "brahmin" high society-ish Indians that adapted pretty well. And other classes, better. Easier to get away with than a Ballsbridge accent in Offaly.

That would make you appear pathetically desperate looking for approval. And that you're stereotyping your team before you talk to them.

The Irish equivalent is making jokes about yourself, and laughing if others make jokes at your expense. But not everyone has the personality that works for taking and giving soft insults. Much better to wait until you know who has a thick skin or who's sensitive.

If you're insisting on stereotypes, then buying pizza or indian takeaway would work better.

You're going to be a team leader at a startup?
If the other team members have good prior work experience, then they'll probably have worked with plenty of nationalities, will treat you as the colleague that's volunteered to be the poor fool explaining this weeks f***ups and purchases to the purple-faced financial controller.

If your bosses are cheap and hiring mostly inexperienced members, they're going to be way more concerned about learning the basics of their craft.

    Try to explain and diagram why you're doing what you're doing;

and that when they are out of their depth and things are going wrong that they've got a windows of some time (X hours) to figure it out for themselves (or talking to their neighbour), and beyond that to look for advice and help from the team leader.
And that you are patient with the newbies; even minor speaking differences between people from Irish midlands and Ireland south can result in misunderstandings that will have you mentally faceplanting the keyboard.
