I would fully expect the DPP to appeal the leniency of that sentence. And if they don't you'd wonder why the hell not.

I just saw that on FB, driver crashes and kills a LC student, he had something like 480 previous convictions, no license, no tax, no insurance, was drunk and speeding. 18 months + 3 months. Judge Martin Nolan strikes again.

Nolan is a ****ing disgrace, worst judge the state has ever seen. What can we do, shag all.

If he did that to my boy he would be dead

The judiciary are the only class of untouchables in this country. Every other profession and walk of life is accountable for their decisions. Sickening

The sooner we learn not to doff our caps to them the better for everyone

    What was he charged with?
What are the maximum sentences for each charge?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

    Wow just wow no words.

If I were the family I would be even more upset now.

What a scum bag he really needs to be dealt with.

How can a sh1t bag like that get up to near 500 convictions please tell me that's a record.

Awful thing to say but what would judge Martin Nolan do in a similar position if he was that in the same position as that family?

Hang on ... Hang on.... 483 previous convictions ?????

The full weight of the law would come down on the scumbag maximum sentence or more

The dead kid was outside the tent no powerful friends and gets no justice

Lets very generously estimate 1 conviction at €2k

You're talking at least €1m we've paid to let that fecker have his 500 days in court

Plus 500 convictions are only the ones he A) got caught for and B) were worthy enough of the DPP to prosecute

I'm sorry but sometimes you have to admit some people are beyond redemption. After the 400th time, had this garbage have been in solitary in the joy, maybe we would not be reading about such a tragedy for the victims family

    500 convictions

That must be a record in this country.

I really do hope the DPP appeals that sentence

There is absolutely no point in engaging in the usual whataboutery and trying to impeach the entire legal system or all judges. It does absolutely no one any good what so ever and make you look like a complete idiot and worse, it detracts from sensible people saying this is completely wrong, on it's own merits and we need legislation brought in dealing with stiffer penalties for death by dangerous driving. It's currently happening in the UK and should be happening here.

There is no way 18 months is a just sentence in this case, simply no justification for it whatsoever. I hate to say this but I completely agree with the poster above, this would make me take the law into my own hands as well.

Wish the thread title gave a bit more this is something which should be plastered all over the news and radio. But no trump and other sh1t from out of our small island is more important.

A month for every year of that poor kid's life

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

18 months doesn't even mean 18 probably do less then 12.

    I am actually very annoyed.

Hahah a guy that avoids some tax gets a 6 year sentence but a guy that kills an 18 year old while drunk driving with nearly 500 convictions gets 18 months!!!! What a great justice system we have.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,853 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

Why don't people in Ireland actually try do something about this? Why don't people go protest? These sort of decisions seem to be daily at this point and other than internet outrage there doesn't seem to be anything done to try change it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭CiarraiAbu2

I wonder if he was in the states would he still be around after 500.

If the ****er in this case had been locked up for avoiding his tax on his car or any of the other myriad of driving offences we might not be having this discussion.

3 strike rule would have him out of the pool many many moons ago.

The judiciary really are a law onto themselves - not all, but far too many are sheltered from normal daily Irish life , pampered up in the law library , with little real daily life experience , as seen from there palatial Dublin4 and 6 mansions.

The poor family. It must be an awful kick in the guts for them to hear this sentence. This is absolutely crazy what in the name of God is going on in our country. This judge should be disbarred.

I dunno, sounds legit to me. All the judiciary live beside each other in Dublin and drink lattes in the law library all day long. They hate people too. Especially the common people.

483? Thats ludicrous, I wonder when his first conviction was? Im guessing he's in about his mid fourties and started committing crimes since his teenage years. thats means he's been convicted of a crime approximately once every month since he was about 18, and probably more he wasnt even convicted for

Can't work out whether you're being sarcastic or not but as a general point, pop along and interact with some of these people. The law library has split to a certain extent because of the CCJ - you'll be amazed the backgrounds and ideological leanings on barristers - albeit a predominantly white middle class profession.

It's not a condescending attitude. A lad has been killed, the punishment, if the situation was not so tragic, is laughably inadequate and idiot posts like yours are whipping people up, not to get the legislation changed, not to perhaps review one judge's record, not to help the situation but to advance the chip on your shoulder.

I'm calling you out for talking about something you've absolutely no idea about. Go down to the CCJ, get on the law library site and email a few JC's who deal with criminal law and ask them if you can shadow them and see how the system works. What you're going to find is everyone from Ex-bus drivers to the 'landed gentry' and everyone inbetween.

Folks, whilst i'm not her biggest fan... Lucinda Creighton and Renua Party ran in the 2016 General Election with a campaign promise to bring a 3 strikes rule, which would have rid the country of scum like this.... but nobody voted for her! I'm sorry to say, but you missed your chance to reform the law for repeat offenders.

Its pushing it a bit all right. 400 seems like a reasonable number that would be fair to all, yet not let people get away with too much. I think a general "400 strikes and you're out" policy would be great for this country, but there will be probably be some who would feel that is just too harsh and doesnt give people a proper chance to mend their ways.

How does someone with that many convictions even be walking the streets or in this case driving.
