I'm looking to purchase my first set tomorrow morning. For a beginner what is more suitable, a curl barbell or a straight barbell? Maybe someone can explain to me what the advantages and disadvantages are?

    Thanks

Since your a beginner I would go with the ez curl bar because it's easier on your wrists when say your doing a barbel curl for example. So the chances of getting injured with it are less likely than with a straight bar. I prefer the feel of it when I'm doing bent over rows too. Plus it's a bit shorter than a straight bar and easier to manage if your working out in a small space and easier to store too.

What do you intend to do with the bar?

    Is it just for curls?

Strengthen my back and arms, the model I am looking at comes with a set of weights.

I'd be more inclined to pick the straight bar because you can do more with it.

But for curls the ez bar would be more comfortable and possibly for tricep extensions as well and you can use it for rows with a slightly wider grip so you're gripping the straight bar.

I am guessing you are getting it in aldi?

From the picture I see an ezcurl bar which is split in the middle. I am not sure if the straight bar would also be split.

If they are both split I would go for the ezcurl one, since I would not want to put any serious weight on a split bar. So I would buy a straight solid bar too.

Aldi say the bar is 4.54kg, so it could be hollow or partially hollow. A hollow ezcurl bar is lighter than that but the splitting connections would add more weight.

In the second photo the straight bar looks to be split also.
For that reasons I'd agree with you. But the curl set, plus a separate one piece straight bar.

TBH The Argos stuff is better than Aldi's offering, they're pretty rubbish this year.

    Barbell set

    Barbell set

that is crappy vinyl weights and defintely a hollow bar.

these plates are a reasonable price
    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9003194/Trail/searchtext%3ECAST+IRON.htm

aldi were charging 20 for a single 10kg plate

This argos 50kg cast iron set is on offer
    http://www.argos.ie/static/Product/partNumber/9003204/Trail/searchtext%3E50KG.htm

so that is 50kg "of steel" for €90. The aldi set is 18.5kg "of steel" and €50 but also has no dumbells and the bar is split while that argos one is a solid bar.

Just used as an example to compare, it's bad when you see a dumbell set that has just the one bar.

It's just a barbell, no dumbells at all.

Al the sets posted would be pretty cheap in general.
best way to compare is KG/€, as it's the plates that are expensice. You always pick up spare bars
