As a hurling man I absolutely love the Fitzgibbon, it is a really classy competition and if you look through the 16 panels in it, nearly all of them have some really good hurlers, both present and future county stars. I do however have a problem with the blatant financial doping that some colleges are doing to get ahead.

The scholarship system is designed to give talented players help through education, both financially and their welfare also, it's brilliant and has undoubtedly helped hundreds of young men and women to further themselves and make the best of their academic potential. However, on the flip side of this, their are a number of colleges who totally and utterly abuse the system. I'm sure anyone who is clued into the competition can pick out a large number of players who are working full time and not in education either full or part time, the colleges throw a couple of grand their way, register them on a course and come January time they tog out and play championship. It devalues the competition in my opinion as there is simply not a level playing field, many colleges just can't compete with the big money their rivals are flashing and this is what is leading to an ever growing gulf between the top 8 or so colleges in the country, and the rest. I want to emphasise that not all the top tier colleges are at this, many of them are genuinely using the scholarship system as it should be, but the few that use it as a de facto Transfer Market needed to be stopped as it is fast becoming a joke.

UCC have a serious panel there in the Fitz. I also admire them for the fact that they've never been ones to bring in players etc.
I think the rules have got tighter the last couple of years. The likes of LIT had made a joke of it a few years ago with the players they had signed up who hardly saw the inside of the place

Great post. Completely goes against the spirit of the competition. It's becoming more and more common among certain college teams where they are paying serious amounts of money to "stars" some of whom have nothing substantial won in the game. As stated these players have no connection with the college other than they are falsely registered on a course and turn out for all Fitzgibbon games.

I know one particular college not far from Kilkenny that activity seeks and recruits big players to come to play with their college. They failed at last minute last September time to secure the "services" of a high profile Wexford senior inter-county player who pulled out of the deal last minute.

Completely demeans the value of this wonderful competition in my opinion.

100% correct and everyone knows it is happening.

I'd suggest a "Seanie Johnston type rule" where you must have played for the college the year before in a competition to be eligible for Sigerson/Fitzgibbon.

Most guys would play Freshers the first year but any guy switching colleges would have to play intermediate or junior the first year to be eligible for the Sigerson/Fitzgibbon the year after.

It would immediately cut out all these bullsh1t pay for play deals

It will very quickly turn into a cancer spread across the colleges competitions if it already hasn't done so by now.

I admire the small pool of college teams that avoid this terrible practice and field 100% legitimate teams without this awful practice of paying sums of money to outside high-profile players to play in pursuit of success.

Fitzgibbon Cup is a sacred competition that we absolutely love and the spirit and integrity of the competition is being demeaned by this scandalous, underhanded and abuse of the system behaviour.

You're correct, effective action to stamp it out needs to be taken by the GAA Higher Education authority.

It's is already destroyed,Just look at the panels for the Fitzgibbon/Sigerson and see the amount of household names in "Year one" of a masters.I'd bet any man,any amount of money not one of them players will finish the semester

I see the likes of Tadhg De Burca and DJ Foran have gone from UCC to UCD this year to do masters. Aidan Walsh tried similar in the sigerson when he was CIT and went to DCU to do a "masters". He couldnt play with DCU as he had already played too many years with CIT. Needless to say he didnt complete that DCU masters...

DJ Foran and Tadhg de Burca have completed their undergraduates in UCC. Many students go on to complete a masters after their undergraduate.
Walsh's case was complicated as a rule had been introduced stipulating that if a student had been in college for more than 6 years they were ineligible, or if they were completing a third college course (or a higher number obviously).
De Burca and Foran have done 3 years in UCC I believe and are now onto their second course. Therefore they are perfectly eligible for FitzGibbon.

There are far too many teams at Sigerson Level,Currently there are 19 teams,It should be reduced to 12.

Same with Fitzgibbon there are 16 teams entered and the early rounds are awash with landslides

Yeah but surely for Collages its about participation and there is no real harm in a team getting a bad beating every few years, both IT Sligo and DCU have had very strong teams in recent years

I wasnt inferring they werent eligible. Just wondering what went on behind the scenes for such a move and what incentives if any were given

I think it's relatively common that students move college when moving onto a masters. It's possible incentives were offered but I would imagine it probably just suited the masters they were looking to do. I think if this particular college were going headhunting guys for their team DJ Foran wouldn't have been at the very top of their list.

Third Level colleges player qualification is always a puzzle to me

I have no problem with players doing a masters etc

But when players don't even attend the college and play when they are registered on a nominal course that's when you have to ask questions about the ethics of these in charge of teams in these bastions of our education system.

DIT lined out a prominent Wexford player last year who did not attend the college

Likewise WIT this year have a major player who works in a financial institution playing.

You have to query what else goes on and the extent of these practices

It's far from "dead in the water" but this sh*t is a bit ridiculous alright. The Higher Education board only ruled on players the night before UUJ played the Guards I read, which is farcical carry on. They'd want to get their act together and check the declared players well before each team plays. Colleges and theur management would want to be slapped on the wrist for this stuff when needed on top of that. All the colleges have a full-time GAA administrator so there's no excuse for not knowing if a player is eligible or not. UUJ are particularly guilty of skirting the rules a bit in recent years.

The issue mentioned from last year wasn't quite as bad as it may appear. The IT Sligo player WAS a genuine student, 100%..but when you get elected to the student union you get most if not all your course off for that academic year and therefore, technically, are not a fulltime student.
The issue of Queens/Stranmillis is a replica of DCU/St Pats and UL/Mary I issues that are administrative in nature. I would blame Comhairle Ardoideachais more for those things for not clarifying the rules.

These are great competitions with fantastic games involving genuine students that get sometimes tarnished by the unethical actions of a few people and colleges.

Very sad to see some colleges acting like this and giving the other colleges bad names.

Surely the rules can't be that complicated and too hard to follow. Time for colleges to be fined big time if not banned. And unsurprisingly it's the same colleges all the time.

    Independent.ie Sigerson Cup Semi-Final

    St Mary’s, Belfast 2-7 UCC 2-6

By Cian O'Connell at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence

Ciaran Corrigan’s 52nd minute goal proved to be the key score as St Mary’s, Belfast advanced to their first Sigerson Cup Final since 1993.

Despite conceding two goals at the start of the game Paddy Tally’s hard working team responded impressively to secure victory.

Corrigan’s goal was followed by a splendid point from substitute Corey Quinn which edged the Ranch two in front.

A Brian O’Driscoll free narrowed the deficit, but UCC squandered several decent chances to force extra-time.

In the closing stages Adrian Spillane and Alan O’Donovan were both sent off for UCC, who had enjoyed such a productive opening.

UCC ruthlessly punished some early lapses in St Mary's concentration to bag two goals. Ian Maguire fisted a fifth minute goal and from the restart fed Cathal Bambury, who expertly bagged a second.

Mary's, though, came thundering back with points from Kieran McGeary (2) and Oisin O'Neill before netting a levelling goal.

Matthew Fitzpatrick reacted smartly to score after an O'Neill shot struck the woodwork. By the time the interval rolled around Mary's had edged 1-6 to 2-2 ahead.

When the action recommenced it remained keenly contested with three UCC points from Killian Spillane and O’Driscoll guiding them two points ahead.

Tally’s well organised Mary’s outfit remained calm with Corrigan’s major the important blow as UCC exited the competition.
