I'm not normally one to be attracted to a race for bling but the medal hanger is definitely something unique and just so happens to be something I was thinking of buying.

More news from the Dunboyne 4 Mile: this year we have a new Strava Flying Mile competition! It excludes other prizewinners and gives everyone a chance to really fly for their last mile of the race.

What does everyone think? Bit of craic? A race within a race?

More info below from our club website:

New this year to the #dunboyne4mile is our Strava Flying Mile! Like the name suggests, it’s a mile in the race where you can put the foot down and see what time you can do! And what better mile to do this than the last mile of the race. Once you hit the last mile Marker it’s time to pull out all the stops and see how fast you can make it to the finish line.

    How it works:
Entrants have to use Strava to take part in this. We will set out a segment on Strava for the last mile of the Dunboyne 4 Mile. If you use Strava already, you will automatically be given a time on Strava for this segment after you traverse it. You will need to upload your race from your watch onto Garmin/Strava before 9pm on the 26th March (race day). Strava will automatically collate the segment time for anyone who traversed Mile 4 that day and calculate the fastest time. We will contact the winner with your prize the following day, and it will be announced on Facebook, Twitter and our website.

There will be prizes for both Male and Female, but prizewinners from other categories will be excluded.

Not on Strava? Easy – just download the app, set up a free account and start using it. Simply set up your Garmin so your watch uploads go automatically onto Strava. Every time you upload your watch runs they’ll appear on Strava. It’s a fun social media tool for runners: connect with your club and other running friends and you can see their runs as well as yours.

I saw that, but I think it's quite likely that the people with the fastest overall times will also have the fastest mile. :)

I could walk the first three miles and run the last, and still not be in the running :pac:

Thanks RayCun. Well we're hoping that someone unexpected will come out of the woodwork and put down a really fast mile, someone who wouldn't otherwise have won a prize. The other cool thing about it is that it's an opportunity for a lot of people to record a very fast mile time. If they want they could even treat miles 1-3 as a warmup! The Irish Runner Paced Miles are getting really popular, but there's probably a lot of people out there who've never really given it welly for a mile and don't know what they can do.

    We shall see!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭Annie get your Run

Also (I think) it will spur people on to keep pushing in the last mile of the race where often they might be tiring so it might help a lot to reach their PB's! And, whether you win the prize or not you can aim to beat your rival because it's a segment on strava. Not that there'd be any rivalry going on in here (fletch/AMK I'm looking at ye!) :D

Imagine the carnage if the flying mile was the first mile

Racism is now hiding behind the cloak of Community activism.

Donore had a midsummer 5k a few years back with a prize for the winner of the first mile (or something ) , but you also had to finish in the top ten

Its usually in the community hall. I usually drop the bag back into my car as the car park is beside it.

But where is the community hall? All I know so far is "outside the M50" :D

(and if I leave my bag in my car, I have to run with my car key)

Middle of the village, can't miss it, loads of signs going up. No problem leaving your bag there if you so wish but there are car parks all around it - primary and secondary school either side. The community centre is 1km from the start and 400m from the finish.

I don't think it's been mentioned here yet but if you're bringing your kids then read further.......

An hour before your main race starts there's 3 kids races: 600m u9, 800m u12 and 1 mile u15. Medals for all. Just €2 entry at the start line.

The Dunboyne 4 mile race has always had these kids races on, fantastic memories for the kids to have.

I signed up on the 16th March (along with a friend).

I love getting medals, shirts, etc. (I realise these are things that most experienced runners look at as a gimmick and probably bin after the race, but as I'm still getting into trying to be able to run a decent distance and build up my fitness, I love all these little accessories, as does the person I am signed up with).

She signed up before me though (11th March, I think). Would I be right in saying that neither of us will get medal hangers, and if so, are there any boardsies that would donate theirs or sell for a reasonable amount? :) (I only have 3 medals, but still think it'd be great to display them well on a hanger from an actual race I participated in). :)
