Fulfil Bar opinions

In the past I have found it quite difficult to get the required level of protein in to me (2g for every KG BW). I have started eating a fulfil bar a couple of times a week as a snack.

I feel that they help me increase the level of protein I get in and also help keep me away from eating cr**!

I was just wondering what are peopls opinions on them.

Do people think they are ok to eat as a snack? Any other protein snacks people could recommend and ideally ones that stop the cravings for "something nice" in the evening.

I really wouldn't see fulfill as a healthy option. Do you recognise any 'healthy' ingredients on the ingredients list?
white chocolate with fibers and sweeteners 25,5% (cocoa butter, whole milk powder, dextrin, sweetener (erythritol, steviol glycosides), inulin, oligofructose, whey protein (from milk), skimmed milk powder, emulsifier (soy lecithin), natural flavour, vanilla), caramel flavoured layer (bulking agent (polydextrose), cocoa butter, skimmed milk powder, xylitol, flavours, emulsifier (soy lecithin), salt), milk protein, gelatine hydrolysate, humectant (glycerol), soy crisps (soy protein, tapioca starch, salt), cocoa nibs, soy oil, low fat cocoa, flavours (contains milk), vitamins (vitamin C (ascorbic acid), nicotinamide, vitamin E (tocopheryl acetate), calcium pantothenate, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B1 (thiamin hydrochloride), folic acid, vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamine)), cream powder (contains milk), salt.

They have a very clever marketing strategy marketing themselves as some type of health food yet they are filled full of additives and sweeteners.

This is the problem with these types of bars...all fine after a good workout if you can't get your protein for what ever reason...but they shouldn't be considered a healthy snack...I have known people to have 2 or 3 of these a day and then be confused as to why the weight wasn't shifting...at 200 kcal a bar they are high enough calories wise...a couple of squares of 80% dark chocolate would be better choice or a tin spread of peanut or almond butter on a rice cake..
Try increase your protein by eating it and if needed add a scoop to your porridge in the mornings or an extra tin of tuna during the day..

Depends what it's compared to though really - compared to a kitkat chunky, they probably are the healthy option for similar calories? And additives by their very nature, unhealthy? Whey powders have additives, including sweetners too for the flavoured options.

My main issue would be the cost tbh. A whey shake with milk would be more protein for similar calories for a lot less money (and personally I find a shake with milk much more filling/ satisfying than one with just water).

I tend to have a fulfil at times I need a snack on the go, and a bit of a protein boost - times I might be otherwise tempted by a "normal" bar. In the scheme of protein bars, they taste nice and aren't too off the wall cost wise (say compared to a Quest bar). Applegreens often have them for 2 for €4 which isn't much more per bar than the prices online (I think €1.88 you can get them).

If you just need a slight boost in protein and/or something sweet, I make this http://www.healthyfitnessrecipe.com/strawberry-banana-protein-bread/ I blitz up the porridge in the nutrininja for the oat flour, and use whatever frozen berries I have. Keep it in the fridge. It's the one "protein" recipe I keep going back to. For protein bang for calorie buck, it compares well to most protein recipes I've looked at.

Just on the Rice Cakes - if you do go that route, watch for which rice cakes you get. Some are very high in calories if you actually look at them. My problem is I just don't like nut butters that much - they never seem like a treat, unfortunately.

A scoop of whey in porridge works well as mention (only when done on the hob in my experience). Overnight oats is one of my staples - Scoop of whey, equal quantities milk and yogurt, frozen/ fresh berries and chia seeds if I have them. That, and post work out shakes, on top of what I get from real food generally gets me over my protein totals for the day.

Tried this recently - well, just whey in protein without the other lah-de-day stuff ;) - and it's lovely even in the microwave. I usually let it sit overnight (sometimes after giving it a short blast in the microwave) - and it's really nice. I have vanilla protein so there's no need for me to add honey or yoghurt.

I've started to treat protein bars the same way as I would a bar of chocolate, ie once or twice a week for a chocolate fix. They're more or less the same calories as a double decker but don't start you on a sugar craving. I wouldn't eat them every day, they're more of a treat food (not to mention expensive)! Carb Killa bars are the best I've tasted so far, 3 for €5 in the Holland and Barrett sale

Fulfil bars are generally under 200 calories. Think only the peanut one is slightly over 200.

Coconut and chocolate is the highest at 209 kcals so yeah they're not a huge dent in your calories.

Are the low sugar nutritional figures a myth?

The Monster Energy drinks that claim zero sugar and zero calories are the same. Has to be something in there that's not healthy.

Depends on what's true about the impacts of the artificial sweeteners in there. There's a lot of scaremongering out there that you'd need to filter out.

I find them great as I don't have a work base and tend to be eating on the move in a van or a car. I used to bring food in lunch boxes for a cold lunch but I'd feel nauseous eating while moving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,247 ✭✭✭Tigger99

They aren't a health food.i might have 1 or 2 a week. I use them as a quick source of protein if Im in a rush. I also bring one with a small bag of popcorn to the cinema in lieu of a more sugary high calorie treat. But I use protein powder for breakfast and I'm conscious of sourcing the rest of my protein from unprocessed food where possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭marialouise

I love the taste of most of them, so I eat them as a treat instead of a bar of chocolate, but never because I'm down on protein. I work 2 different jobs and I'll always keep a bar handy in my bag in case I don't get time for one of my meals, but usually they end up going uneaten as I've met my protein goal and have gone for a 'whole food' which I find more filling. If I'm travelling, or really stuck for time, they're a great way of getting in a bit of protein for a reasonable calorie count (180-210 really isn't bad, I could even fit them in on a 1500kcal day). I personally don't find a shake that filling, I prefer having something to chew so if I didn't have access to 'real' food I'd choose a bar over a shake. I love the Fulfil bars and also yes CarbKilla! A lot of other protein bars have crazy high cals (350 in some of them) so do watch out, but there's nothing wrong with them once in a while as long as you're getting plenty of nutrition through real food throughout the week. If you're having trouble meeting protein you'd better address that instead of relying on bars to do it for you. What do you typically eat in a day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,430 ✭✭✭bladespin

I like them, don't have them very often mind, tbh they're great for a movie night or going to the cinema with the mrs, she can have her malteasers etc and I don't feel left out.

I find it difficult to get my protein in every day so if I can one of these within my cals and as a quick snack - I will. The white chocolate and cookie dough is so good! Mostly I use them as a filler between work and the gym...Id be starving otherwise!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,969 ✭✭✭laoch na mona

they're delicious but I wouldn't be relying on them to get my nutritional requirements

Just reading this thread. I've never tried the Fulfil bars..just didn't appeal to me as a rule if it has more than 6-7 ingredients that I don't know! it can't be that good for you?
So does anyone make there own protein bars from natural ingredients? I've been trying homemade flapjacks as a snack after a run from Dominic Munnelly, they are nice and I've tweaked them to my liking. I'd be interested if anyone has ideas on their own bars.

I've tried, but I've found it hard to match the stated protein levels in fulfil or quest bars for a similar calorie count to them.

I make the protein bars from this thread.

Ingredients are peanut butter, oats, flaxseed, almonds, water, maple syrup and chocolate protein powder (whey protein concentrate (Milk), emulsifier (soy lecithin), cocoa powder, flavouring, sweetener (sucralose)).

Are they made entirely from natural ingredients? No... but they have way less ingredients that Fulfil bars and are less processed.

To go the extra mile you could swap the chocolate protein powder for unflavoured whey and raw cacao powder (I tried this a few times and just couldn't get them to taste satisfactory).

Must try the boards recipe again. The problem I have with a lot of these recipes is that I'm not mad about peanut butter, but I think I have almond butter at home at the moment!

I make this most weeks to go with my afternoon brew. I just swap the fresh strawberries with whatever frozen berries I'm using that week!
http://www.healthyfitnessrecipe.com/strawberry-banana-protein-bread/ Not as high in protein as fulfil/ quest/ boards bars, but is normally enough of an extra to get me to my goal.

I alternate between almond and peant butter.

And I also alternate between using whole almonds and hazelnuts.

That looks like a great recipe, thanks for posting it. Just out of interest, when you say you use frozen berries that you have on hand, do you just stick them in the mixture still frozen, or let them defrost? Definitely going to make this bread in the next few days...

I just mix them in frozen. Normally i use aldi summer fruits, so that is raspberries, blackberries and currants.

I did it with frozen strawberries this week, but probably would've been better chopped to be honest, but raspberries have worked well for me before just put in frozen.

I just nutrininja porridge oats for the flour, about 130g is what I use.

Look for one with high protein content, ie 75+g protein per 100g.

Typical ones would be MyProtein, Bulk Powders, The Protein Works but not limited to those so look for higher protein content in any brand.

Currently in the freezer made with almond butter. Might try electric mixer with dough hooks, as probably a bar left on my hands from the mixing! Tastes lovely based on that surplus though.

By my calculations though they're coming out a good bit more than a fulfil if I make seven bars, but more protein. Planning on trying it to 9 bars, which would be similar calories and protein to a fulfil bar.

Yeah I use an electric mixer with dough hooks every time. I found it way too hard mixing everything by hand. Something like these:

I make 8 bars as that's the handiest way to cut them up :)

Yep, have them for the mixer already, just my hands were too messy at that stage to go rooting for them!

I will definitely be making them again, but I have to be honest, they're not as nice as fulfil (or quest bars) imo, and really need to be kept cool! But significantly cheaper obviously, and they are more filling. A lot of days I wouldn't need the extra protein of a full bar of either option, so I will probably go with splitting to 16's the next time, just as a tea break/ get me over the line option. Out of almond butter, so will be trying peanut butter the next time as well (also subbed the flax seed for chia seed).

Digging out the chocolate whey, I also came across vitafiber that I brought previously, and haven't got around to experimenting with!

If you're experimenting with Vitafibre protein treats, might I recommend a few recipes from the Beltsander!
    http://www.thebeltsander.org/vitafibre-protein-cookies/

Where did you get the vitafibre?

I make vitafiber cookies (20g vf powder - 3 teaspoons of water & 30g of whey) They work great!

You can also make them into a bar shape and freeze.

You can get vf powder on myprotein and bulkpowders etc.

Is VitaFiber the same stuff that are in Fulfil bars? (that give them the high fibre content?)

Anyone else think the new Myprotein carb crushers are made by Fulfil? If you compare the ingredients of Caramel nut with their peanut caramel etc. they are almost identical. Same macro and vitamin profiles too
