I know that if you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight. I know the food pyramid by heart. I know that it cant be done 'over night'. I know the gi diet. So why have i been trying to lose 2 stone for the past 5 years?:mad::(

What have you done to try and lose the 2 stone? Exercise is a component of managed weight loss.

Have you consulted your GP / gotten a bloodtest to see if you're lacking in any nutrients / minerals, or gotten the advice of a personal trainer to figure out a suitable workout regime (cardio / weights).

I was running nearly every day, sometimes for hour runs. The exercise made me binge eat as i was so hungry from the diet and exercise. I lost and gained weight quickly. It seemed like alot of effort for nothing

yes ive tried the gym and a trainer for years, i lost a tiny amount of weight; nothing compared to my efforts. I know skinny people who do no excersise and this puts me off

Bit of advice is to stop comparing. That gets you nowhere.

There could be a range of factors as to why, and you don't know what they're eating/doing unless you're around them 24/7.

They could be very active during the day. Rushing around the office, or on their feet all day.

Sorry but your lack of self control made you binge eat not the exercise. You won't get sympathy from me and there is no quick fix. Discipline seems to be your problem.

Youre right, I have had bad experiences with very strict disciplinarians in my life. I swore not to be like those people. It has pros, i have alot of fun :D I find weight loss, AND maintaining my weight when i get there....simply a nightmare

Until you feel that maintaining a certain weight is worth your while, it won't happen. It's easy to establish a routine. Go for a 3km run 4 times a week, don't eat after 7pm etc. Your choice, but as I said there is no quick fix.

OP, this seems like it would be more suited to the Health and Fitness forum than to Biology, let me know if you would like it moved to where more relevant eyes might see it.
    Thanks!

Exercise alone isn't a great way to loose weight. It makes you hungry, though some people drink water first rather than eat straight away.

Also there's the whole carbo loading thing which means that exercise may cause your body to be geared up to storing carbs in glycogen.

But the big reason is that to loose one pound of weight you'd need to burn 3,600 calories. That's a lot of exercise.

Have you been tracking your calories everyday? Do you know what your maintenance (TDEE) is?
If the answers to the above are no, then there's your problem.

no I get very upset if i eat even slightly more than intended! It makes me binge and hate myself

Sounds like you eat back the calories burned from the runs and then some.

Knowing the food pyramid is one thing but you'd be better off knowing about nutrition, understanding a bit about what you eat, the number of calories your body needs versus what you burn.

Try to focus less on trying to exercise your way to a deficit and focus on understanding how you fuel your body and how you can eat sensibly.

And take responsibility for your decisions. Knowing the food pyramid...knowing anything means nothing when it'd the actual putting into practice that matters.

I think you need to seek professional help. No offense intended but what you are experiencing seems to go deeper than lack of motivation to exercise or eat appropriately. Take care.

    Food isn't your problem.

There's something underlying that you need to address before everything else.

I've been there. It's not a massive deal...just a different way of addressing a problem.

Something like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy would help you get to the root of the issue, address it and deal with it.

No amount of running or dieting will get around the mental obstacle. That's you're starting point.

Knowing and doing aren't always the same. I know what I have to do to look like a Men Fitness cover model. But I don't look like that, ainec.

In your case it's clear the binge eating is the issue. Either as a reward for the exercise, or due to lack of prep once hunger kicks in.
Looking at CBT as suggested above feels like a smart option right now.

Also, the food pyramid is not particular conducive to weight loss. Athletes and people with very intense jobs would get away with the food pyramid but in general its not really a good option for everyone.

I am no expert in either nutrition or exercise even though I give lots of thought to both - just getting that out there first.

The answer to your question "why have I been trying to lose 2 stone for the past 5 years?" could have a complex answer but the simple version is that it is probably because your diet is wrong.

If I were you I would concentrate on getting that right. Exercise is grand and all that but is a relatively inefficient way of losing weight. (The health benefits of exercise is another matter) You have take far less out of yourself in making diet-related changes and achieve more.

The other issue with exercise is that it will be difficult when you are overweight/unfit, and can be draining leading to major challenges with diet such as binge eating. Very intense exercise regimes might be effective if adhered to but there is an element of the fad diet about them too - they can be effective in the short-term bur are they sustainable within the context of your normal lifestyle? There also can be a tendency to psychologically link gym attendance with diet if you are combining a serious exercise regime with strict diet with the result that often when gym attendance gets disrupted the inclination is to blow the diet as well and "get back on the horse" later.

You can be in a gym forever and not lose weight. It is unlikely that if you get your diet right the same situation will be the case.
