Meant to post them earlier but never got around to it.

    Top Brands

    1. Hyundai 1987 +.6%
    2. Toyota 1965 +3.6%
    3. Ford 1685 +5.5%
    4. Nissan 1218 +31.1%
    5. Renault 1176 +.8%
    6. VW 1086 -6.7%
    7. Kia 925 +41%
    8. Skoda 744 +8.6%
    9. MB 729 +80%
    10. Opel 680 +26%

    Top Models

    1. Hyundai Tucson 916 -17%
    2. Nissan Qashqai 584 +106%
    3. Toyota Corolla 556 -1%
    4. Ford Fiesta 536 +16%
    5. Ford Focus 515 -5%
    6. Toyota Yaris 447 +13%
    7. VW Golf 388 -7%
    8. Renault Megane 380 +955%
    9. Skoda Octavia 370 +8%
    10. Kia Sportage 366 +520%

Close at the top, big drops for VW and massive increase for Nissan, Kia and Mercedes. New E Class top selling premium model on market but surely new 5er will usurp it in March?

Tucson picked up where it left off last year. Big jump for the new Renault Megane though. Opel have nothing in the top 10 despite the Astra being a fairly fresh model. Large family cars seem to be becoming a bit redundant ~ no Passat, Mondeo, etc in the top 10 either. Crossovers seem to be replacing them. Mercedes knocking 10% off their models along with the current 5 Series and A6 being replaced soon surely helped the E Class.

10 day figures are always more reflective of what models were ready to go straight away. Be interesting to see what the rest of the month brings.

Not really. Their stuff is mainly sold from the plans unlike the likes of Hyundai or Toyota where you basically pick a colour from stock.

Opel aren't very popular here anyway and I suppose all the fire incidents didn't do them any favours. The astra, despite getting some good reviews on how it drives is a bit tacky in terms of design both inside and out imo

But wasn't the golf the most popular car on irish roads a few years back?

How much of these figures are driven by how easily financed certain brands are?

Kind of, but not really. They peaked around 2007. Even in that year, they were outsold by the Focus, Avensis and Corolla. A lot of the Golfs you'd see would be uk imports.
My point about buying to order is that dealers wouldn't have yards full of sold cars on the 1st January.
This happened when the Passat came out too, they got off to a slow start then got going.
That's not to take away from Hyundais effort. The scrap page surely helps.

Toyota would be in a much better position for 2017 if they hadn't preregged around 200 cars in December (a lot of them were CH-R's) so they could beat Hyundais figure by about 30 units just to say they were number 1.
They did a similar trick in 2005, made dealers reg a load of diesel Avensiss as demos on Christmas week

The Megane figures are bit misleading too. The figures now include the Megane grand coupe which replaces the fluence which remained a decent seller in Ireland even last year

I'm amazed there isn't a single mention of Audi or BMW in those lists.

Look at how many of the top 10 brands are offering 0% finance or scrappage and you'll have your answer.

Audi on 496 - down 9% on last year. New A5 and Q5 waiting in the wings.

BMW on 381 - down 50% on last year. All models (including 5 Series obviously) down significantly. Only 1 Series up - which is 6 cars. With all the money they've thrown at it you'd be expecting better surely?

Bmw figures are terrible especially as they seem to be pre regging cars already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,322 ✭✭✭MarkN

Pretty sure 50% of all BMW sales in Ireland are the 5 series. You can't register the new model if it isn't landed yet I suppose.

On the VW figures, I was in Frank Keane VW Sat, they had 14 sales staff on, the showroom was absolutely jammed.

Grand Coupe was only launched very late last year. Also the likes of traditional top sellers like the Focus and Astra would include hatchback, saloon and estate model figures too so their poor start are even more misleading so.

The Megane is a new model so you'd expect it to sell well for a while.

The figures are relative though and show a 7% drop since last year, no matter what way they were sold

Disappointed not to see any seat on list. They look like cracking cars and we're doing great deals this time around. I guess ateca came in a bit late.

They upped the equipment levels on them, you also have the scrappage scheme, pcp deals and availability probably helped.

I'm just saying that last year you had Megane and fluence figures so the jump is relative to both these sales from last year.

The Megane looks great in all guises especially the GT level

Seat have quite a few facelifts on the way soon, along with the Ateca. I'd guess themselves and Skoda (with Kodiak) will be up there on the figures in H2.

In January last year 366 of their 1307 was 5 Series so 28%.

All their models bar 1 Series (up 4) are behind last January. Awful performance given the money they have thrown at finance contribution.

Its possible the BMWs and Audis suffer more from imports than the Quashqais etc?

Very similar. The big difference is Nissan has a decent entry level petrol. With the Tucson they don't really stock petrols and discourage you from getting one. If Hyundai had a small turbo petrol they'd sell even more.
Wouldn't be surprised if they stuck the 1.0 turbo into it down the line.

Not surprised audi are hurting. Yes the quality of the car is very good but the standard specs are awful. You would have to spend a fortune to beef up a new A4

Total registrations were up 1.6% after 20 days (30,091 vs 29,613)

BMW (-47.5%), MINI (-55.92%), Honda (-43.81%), Landrover (-51.15%) the big losers.

Figures above include vans too. Car numbers below:

Hyundai registered 750 cars on the last day to take top spot but the top two still finished well down on last year. The big gainers were MB (10% pricing reduction and new E Class), Renault (new Megane) and Kia (no Sportage last year) Biggest losers by far BMW (no real 5 Series which accounted for 300 of their deficit) but with all the money they threw at deposit contribution its very surprising.

Market slightly down on last year by 800 but would expect it to be down by more in February/March.

I can see the same thing that happened to Smart coming for mini. Diluted brand, niche fillers with no niche, all while forgetting what made the core model popular in the first place.

Hyundai, the motoring equivalent of a fridge on wheels, souless, bland and boring.Except in the case of the coupe (if its still in production),that was just a copy of the Mustang style/looks wise.

Could also throw Kia in there, more of the same blandness. The i30 copys a lot from the Focus's styling, while the i40 from the Mondeo's.

Was in a BMW dealership last week and the showroom was very quiet, phones were ringing occasionally alright but there were no customers in looking at models. Found that a bit odd for the end of January. I've been pestered all week via email from BMW about going to the usual VIP sales events. Local Audi dealer showroom seems to be quiet enough too when I'm passing that way.
