im sick of hearing about it and it hasnt even started yet.
its a total waste of time . the subject is so strong that people have their opinions on it and are very unlikely to change them.

why cant we just have one week of facts and then a referendum.

Because that would be the sensible thing to do but the public and politicians are largely doltish.

We'll have months and months of "facts" before the week of facts.

I'm sure it won't be long before I'm fed up hearing from the extreme wing of the Catholic Church, pretending that they care about children.

The only one that truly matters is the fire brigade. Those PC brigade folks wouldn't put out a fire in a fit.

A total waste of time!? If you're pregnant you de facto become a ward of the state because you cannot make your own decisions regarding what goes on in your own body. Hardly a waste of time unless you want to permit a regime of forced labour.

Wrt people "unlikely to change opinions": the whole point of politics is to win arguments and change people's opinions ie. over to your side.

The facts are well known: abortions in places where abortion is available are overwhelmingly performed early on and often where someone has already had children. Also, laws do not and have not prevented abortions as people travel or procure medical abortions ie. abortifacients through unofficial channels.

A referendum on the 8th amendment is long overdue.

We wouldn't have to be bored about it if we just let women make their own choices. It's none of anybody's business what a woman does with her body. It's nobody's business whatsoever except her own.

Look we are doing what any sensible country would do. We had a long running subtle campaign through the media. Then we had a general election to elect representatives to sort out these kind of issues. They have compiled a citizens assembly to discuss the issues and make a recomendation on whether the law should be changed. Then the politicians will go back and decide if they can make the change via legislation or whether we need a referendum. Then the people may or may not have their say.

    It's a perfectly straightforward approach.

Let's just have the ****ing referendum and be done with it.

But if it doesn't pass, can the Repeal crowd then just STFU?

Canadian judge sorted the anti-choice filth who just love putting up the graphic posters

    We need this here

    http://fus.in/2isskZK

A Canadian judge says an anti-abortion group cannot put their ads up on public buses in the city of Grande Prairie, Alberta because they might cause “psychological harm to women who have had an abortion.” The offending ad contains pictures of fetuses and reads, “Abortion kills children. End the killing.”

Women need to be able to go out in public without being confronted and criticised for the choices they make about their reproductive health

if you want abortion to be legal then you are pro abortion.

But if you were satisfied when you arranged and had the abortion that all you did was remove a clump of cells then why would a picture of a clump of cells bother you?
If I had a tooth pulled and left the dentists and saw toothpaste ads showing rows of gleaming teeth, I wouldn't feel bad about my tooth?

Much the same could be said if you were waving around pictures of heart transplants in front of them for some reason

no need to debate just let the people decide

Indeed.. the problem is both sides are terrified that the decision won't go their way. Although you'd have to think that it'd pass, if the older more conservative groups turned out in their droves (as they normally do for elections) while the younger group figured "ah it'll be grand! Sure Twitter said so!" it mightn't be so clear cut.

The issues and ramifications either way are well known by anyone with a stake/interest in the question. Debating it however allows the powers that be to kick an actual referendum down the road a bit more while presenting the illusion of democracy (which really jut turns into a slanging match by extremer views on both sides - you can already see it in this thread!).

As you say, what SHOULD be done is that a date is set and the referendum held within the next 3-6 months say, but unfortunately we'll all have to suffer the pro/against "arguments" for a while longer than that I'd say.
