Skoda Octavia, buy now or wait for new model?

    Hi there,

    Looking for some advice please.

Thinking of buying a skoda octavia. Probably a petrol due to low mileage less that 8000 km per year. I am prob looking for the high spec model. Would be interested in your views.

Should i wait until the new model comes out during the year or buy now?
I am worried that the scrappage deal may not be on offer with the new model?

I do not need finance but will probably trade in. What kind of money would i be expected to have to pay after trading in a 2013 ford focus zetec with 28k miles on the clock in good condition?

If you do a factory order now it will be the new model unless you get something that is already in stock.

If the looks of the new model are to your liking then it is probably the better option.

I pity anyone who looks down on or makes a joke on what someone else is driving.

It's a sure sign of lack of maturity and class.

    Corgi or matchbox ?

Depends if you care about having that lat st model. You often get end of line models at a better price if that would tempt you to change now.

How does a scrappage deal come into play if you are trading in a 2013 Ford Focus unless they are giving you it on top of the trade in value of the Focus?

Sell your own private and approach dealer with cold hard cash.

Sell your own private and approach dealer with cold hard cash.

He will be selling it for years. That vintage car with that value is pretty much impossible to sell privately. No one will spend that kind of money on car with no warranty or comeback. The only option is trade in.

It's up to you op. I personally think that current model is way better looking that what's coming. Its a matter of taste. One thing for sure, you get better deal and discount on outgoing models then new.
Another thing to consider is that vrs is not coming out right away too. They do petrol versions of it. If you talking high spec, then vrs petrol is the one to go for.
On The other hand, new model moght bring some more petrol engine options. Right now it's better, but still very poor.

I think the biggest improvements to the facelift model will be the interior which gets the latest VAG infotainment system similar to what the facelifted Golf will get in a few months. I'd say standard equipment will probably increase too as the current Octavia is a bit mean with toys unless you start ticking the options list. Engines will probably get tweaked tooShame Skoda made an arse of the exterior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭wolfe

Thanks for advice. I think there are going to be 2 new petrol engines with more bhp that the current one. I think the difference in the exterior is quite subtle although a lot of ppl dont like the split headlights. That dosnt bother me.

I like the new look one myself and the older one. Its still the older one on Skoda's Irish website though, anyone know when is that likely to change?

Once the 171 rush is over/old stock is sold most likely.

Haven't driven the Skoda petrols but I have the Seat Leon and the Golf TSI in 1.2 litre. I have to say I was surprised with the power from them. When the rep rang me and said he was lending me a 1.2 Seat Leon I was pissed off but that changed a few mins after I started driving it.

New Octavia is coming April ish. With a price hike which they are going to realise through credit interest rates on PCP and credit as that's nearly all car sales.

An outright buy would be better protected.

Newer models are generally better specd which could be a factor plus resale values. However you could get a good deal on the older model but as people say it's really popular as is the range with demand very high so a deal may be possible but probably not massive unless they want to clear stock which will be later in the year. Hard to guage but I'd start talking to a dealer as high end models are to order unless they have a demo matching your spec so start investigating now and establish what you want.

Petrol engines are very good. I have a 1.2 and it's more powerful than my old 1.4 golf. Smooth and quiet and I can easily get 55 m/g driving smooth.

Hey. Bought a new 162 standard style (top of the range) last July. Was very pleased with the spec which is very very generous compared to VW. 1.6 110 bhp diesel. Very happy with value for money and got good deal for a trade in of a 10 Octavia. Few weeks later the car was written off.

So I was going buying another one with cash. Rang a few dealers to see what cash price would be and got very different prices. Must say difference was about 2000 from cheapest to dearest. My own dealer was the cheapest. 25600 for standard diesel style.

In the end I bought the vrs 171 which I always wanted.

If your buying straight give a ring around the dealers. They're mad for your business and chances are will deliver it to you for free.

What kind of straight cash deal roughly did you get for the vrs..

I've found the Mark III (2015) model to be considerably noisier inside than the Mark II (2005).
Is it just me or have they cut down on noise deadening materials, carpet etc, to save weight?

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

I'm looking to get a new vrs..currently drive a 142 estate version.. visited 2 dealers and one is offering 20000 euro and the other is offering 22000....I still think 22000 is not enough for my vrs..any thoughts please..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

3 year old car that was 34k new before extras? Seems decent to be honest. What were you expecting?

Maybe I'm expecting to much..16000 grand with my own for a 36000 scout ..another dealer 14000 grand for a 36000 vrs..it's a bit strange I feel..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

They'll retail it at maybe 25 way and have to service it, do whatever jobs need doing and warranty it. The 22k offer is no all that bad. Keep shopping around and play them off against each other where you can.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

22k trade in seems pretty good to me... That is over 60% of cost new... 50% depreciation over 3 years is 'normal'

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

Thanks..will keep playing one off the other..new vrs and scout prices not out until 20th march apparently..might wait till then.

They're on the configurator at the moment but the options prices aren't. Add 600 to the price to get the retail.

Don't be afraid to 'inflate' what one dealer offered when talking to the other...

3 years, 14.5k so just under 5k a year like for like. It's not bad at all. 14.5k is approx 1/3 of the new price so 33% depreciation over 3 years is good.

Numbers make sense to me if you want a new one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

    Ok thanks..and it's a dsg as well ..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭bmwguy

I abhor depreciation in a car I tend to buy cars i can't afford new that have their depreciation done (I just pay over the odds for fuel and motor tax!) but as far as new cars go, it's not bad what you are being offered. And the VRS is a nice car. If it's like for like spec-wise it's a good deal. Each new generation of car tends to be a small bit improved in the tech department.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

Thanks..i think it is a better spec..not sure how much a sun roof is and my 142 model doesn't have leather seats

14.5k to trade up 3 years to a higher spec and DSG is pretty ok in my books.

The demo should be bit cheaper with facelift out.. Will be worth a little bit less in few years maybe..

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

An import would work out alto cheaper and much better spec I think.

Aren't Irish ones specced better these days? What is the OP supposed to do with his trade in?

Yeah it's interesting with the octavia... The Irish spec style facelift gets the top spec columbus infotainment system.. They only get that on l and K in the UK.. It probably balances itself out.. They seem to have an extra model than the three specs over here.. One of them comes with leather as standard...

Not sure on the Octavia but I know for sure that Irish Superbs have a better spec per equivalent trim level. Sportline in the UK doesn't even get parking sensors as standard

I would have thought 1k is about as good as it gets buying straight versus a trade in.. Depends then if you went for an old model or new... Are you going pcp or loan or buying outright..

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

Straight cash..not sure what to do..import looks very attractive now..late 162 car saving 5000 euro on Irish price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭GustavoFring

My 152 is going next week. Initial dealer offer was 2.5k off a new one straight for a factory order with a lot of extras. 5k for a 162 isn't really great. And the Irish spec is better on them too if you were looking at importing.

If all goes to plan it's sold privately.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

What dealer is that..and is that for a vrs..2.5 k off is good

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭butrasgali

I would wait if I got a good deal on a top spec scout or vrs..

Galvins in Bandon, was on a petrol one. I'd imagine the diesel is similar.
