I wonder will there be a Daytripper Festival in 2017 ???

heard rumblings that the festival is going to be partnered up with the Tramore Ska and Reggae Festival. That would make sense as theres a strong Ska following in Waterford and a lot of previous Daytripper acts were of the Ska/Reggae genre

Although us Waterford people give out about it each year (acts are crap, RSC is too far out etc) its a great thing for the City each summer

Still holding out for Tears For Fears to headline the festival

To be fair, most people love it including myself, always a small minority will give out and find some reason to complain, half of them I'd be surprised actually at it.
Roll on summer one in gas works, been to every one so far, madness not to be.(no pun intended)

Only year I didn't attend was last year due to other things but enjoyed seeing The Darkness, Kaiser Chiefs, Walking on cars and Madness the previous years

The realization is that the organizers can only afford has been/once famous acts (nicest way I could put it lol) but it sells as the acts that play have some good tunes and it's a day out

I'd say King Kong Company will definitely be there. After that, who knows?
I'd like to see an Irish night, Villagers, Jape, Lisa Hannigan, O Emperor, there is a ton of good Irish acts these days, the above is just an example.
And for the dance night, Underworld, Basement Jaxx, Grove Armada, Orbital or someone from that era.

Zero hope of Orbital or Underworld, as much as I'd love it! I just can't see them getting the gate to match their fees.

Was it JAMES that were in a bit of a huff when they played a few years ago because they thought they were headliners ???

I'd love to see Duran Duran play daytripper but there's no way in hell daytripper could afford them

2017 should be broke up into 3 nights like previous years

Fri- Dance night- Fatboy Slim, Underworld, king Kong kompany etc
Sat- 80's night with the likes of Tears For Fears, Human League and Bros etc
Sun- Alternative/rock with Sultans of ping, the Undertones, Tom Chaplin (guy from Keane) etc

Theres a rumour going around that this years daytripper will actually take place on the last weekend in August instead of the first weekend of July, if thats the case, then in my opinion, its a great move.

Is that clashing with Electric Picnic?

Is it true that this year's event will be held on the new Waterside car park?

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 9,079 Mod ✭✭✭✭Aquos76

Would assume it will be yeah

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,990 ✭✭✭longshanks

Having it the week before the picnic will affect numbers. It's a bad idea if you ask me.

Ireland is so full of music and arts festivals now-a-days, it's so tough to know what weekend would be in anyway better than another. There's also other events like if Waterford does well in the hurling, does that have an effect if they were playing on the weekend of the music festival.

Having it late August seems to be a good idea, promote it heavily in Waterford City when people are in around for Spraoi and other summer events.

Would having it as part of Spraoi not be a better idea ?. As using it as the highlight of it ?. Basically the VIP paid for part of music acts ?.

From what I heard, the headline act that they want this year can only do that weekend so thats why they are running with this weekend.

I think yer man jamiroquai would be a good headliner

He's bringing out a new album and is doing a summer tour around Europe

Was always a fan of him, great songs.

Really hope it's not someone like Jamiroquai, awful band, awful frontman. For the 90's night would love to see something like Richard Ashcroft being supported by someone like Cast or Kula Shaker but have no idea would that be within price range. I remember Paul Weller played in South years ago, wonder could they afford him for the 80's night, or if he is even doing anything this year.

Ah very unlikely the band's I'm into will ever play here, I'm lucky that some even consider to play in the country at all. Best of luck to the lads running daytripper though

Not many people big into ub40, ocean colour scene, madness, whatever..but they go along to support the festival and its a great night out.if we waiting for our favourite bands, they'd be no one at it.

Ah I'm very picky what I go to these days, not just for financial reasons, but I chose to do other things with my time and energy. You do make a good point though, it seems like this festival is still reasonably well supported, which is great, but I don't think it's for me. I won't write it off just yet though, but it's just not for me right now

Isn't there 2 ub40s and this is the other one (not the one that played in 2015)or did they all get back together ??

Edit it's same version that played in 2015 (UB40 reunited)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UB40 (that is the UB40 of today)

It will sell no doubt, sold well the last time these guys played

Didn't our own Gilbert O'Sullivan write a song about this?

    A Clone again, Naturally

    :)

Don't think they announced the dates for the bluegrass yet but it's normally that weekend in August

Seems like Daytripper could only be the one day dis year. Not sure how it's going to sell as UB40 only played here in 2015 and I think they played in Dublin last year too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,681 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

I remember In 2015 The Darkness played the day after UB40 and the singer looked so uninterested and was just going through the motions maybe they were told it's a car park

Christy Moore was offered the chance to headline one of the nights in 2013 but refused as he didn't want to play a car park in Waterford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,510 ✭✭✭Max Powers

How you know Christy Moore gave that reason, he's played Waterford numerous times, he might like the intimacy of smaller rooms but if the money was right I'd guess anyone would play day tripper.wouldn't be a fan of Christy or trad so my fingers are crossed for something a bit more upbeat.

Uninterested is the last way to describe that performance. He/They put on some show.

yeah it was a good show but from what i remember Justin Hawkins didnt interact with the crowd much. Grew up listening to the darkness and was amazing to see them on our own footsteps

The years before i enjoyed the Kasier Chiefs (walking on cars supported them) and Madness. Didnt go last year but heard it was good

Its a grand little festival for our city and the organisers are trying there best to get acts here as we dont attract many big names here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,681 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Groove festival (Aug 21/22- who always have similar lineups to Daytripper has announced UB40 and Primal Scream as there headliners

Be good to see Primal Scream play at Daytripper if there going to be other days

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭reni10

I think Primal Scream would be a big draw and would be great if they do play in Waterford...

    Love that, fingers crossed.

I was walking along the 'waterside' around lunch time today and noticed a large crane on the site placing what I assume are the sections for the new bridge.....so looks feasible that the gasworks will be capable of being the venue for this years 'day tripper'
