Isn't this talk of fist size portions a bit simplistic. You need to know the calories.

Its trying to give an idea of the size of a portion. Anyone should have an idea of the size of a fistful of anything and the quality of food being suggested means there isn't going to be a huge variance in the calorie content of what you eat if you're a little out on the serving size.

If someone tries to convince themselves that what they've put on their plate is a fist-sized portion when it's clearly larger, then it doesn't matter what way they measure it. They're going to want to find a reason to eat it all anyway

It's a good indication of a portion alright.

I still think people should be conscious of the calories, at least quantify a typical days food.

If your trying to lose weight then you don't want to cut calories too much or you'll lose muscle, plus protein needs to be high to avoid muscle loss too.

If your trying to gain muscle then you need to be in a slight surplus, so you need to know the calories. Unless you want to just eat loads and gain more fat than is necessary.

I'm not disagreeing but there is more than one way to skin a cat. The method should work and the scales is the other way of assessing if you're eating enough. If you're on a surplus for building muscle, you need to be aiming for ~1kg/month gain, for example.

It's not entirely foolproof but it should work if you want it to. It's a short guide as well so it's not covering all angles. Just a breakdown of whats involved in eating a proper balanced meal.

It's a 3min video so it's obviously going to be simplistic.

It's also aimed at people who know little about proper nutrition and have trouble sustaining a proper diet. I think this target group will be much more responsive to someone telling them they need a palm sized portion of this or a fist sized portion of that, than someone telling them they need to weigh their food with a scale and track everything on myfitnesspal.

The method is obviously less accurate than counting everything, but for people starting out it's a stepping stone towards proper diet accountability, it won't confuse the **** out of everyone and will yield far better results than what they were doing before anyway.
