Sink Stopper

    Hi all.

I bought a house last spring and I am slowly trying to fix all the little things that need sorting.

All the sinks in the house have (a rubbish) stopper system that I have only seen in hotels. See pic below.

The problem is that NONE of them are water tight anymore. I'm presuming that the rubber seals need replacing.

What I want to know is:

    1. Can the rubber seals be replaced?

    2. Is there a name for this this style of stopper system so I know what to ask for?

    3. Are they widely available?

    4. Is it possible to get them replaced with a traditional stopper sysytem? (When my bank account recovers!!)

    Thanks for your help!

If you know the make of the tap & drain you might have some hope. Failing that I'd replace with a GOOD quality click clack drain:

    Thanks for the reply.

I haven't a clue what make it is. I was hoping they were a standard size.

I was hopeing I would get away with a cheap fix, rather than pulling the sinks apart.

Unfortunately there is no standard size and without a name nigh on impossible to match exactly.
You could pop into a hardware store and try match up O rings, or, as a very temp fix, try to fit one or two small rubber bands into the grove.

Would there be anywhere on the taps where there might be some sort of manufacturers mark to help identify them?

A garage mechanic or hose repair guy would have a box selection of O Rings.
The measure of an O ring is its Internal Diameter (ID) and its thickness.
    Something like 35 X 2 but that's a guess.

Good idea. I didn't think of that.

Bring the stopper in the second picture to a half decent plumbing supplier Smallman on Sallymount Avenue Ranelagh, Plumb Centre Stillorgan, Chadwicks... [if you are in Dublin Sth1]
    They will have what's needed!

U could tighten the threaded part into stopper and it may seat down better

Thanks for the suggestion but the rubber is badly perished and cracked in places.

Just change the waste itself. Those pop up ones are a feckin nightmare anyway. The click clack ones are more common these days. Although a lovely idea at the start they soon seize up from soap scum, dirt and moreso limescale. Get the waste that has a disc built into it that flips around. They give no trouble

I'm beginning to think that changing for the click clack ones are the way to go.

I don't really understand what you mean by the highlighted bit. Is this something that is built into some click clacks?

I have those click clack ones and they are a pain in the arse. 2 of them won't come up after being pushed down.

It's great the way the old style on a chain worked perfectly well but the new modern ones are rubbish.

I agree. Talk about fixing something that wasn't broken!

No. theclick type are lovely in a showroom but in reality they stick after time.
There's a different type, with a revolving disc that flips around. This type is much more reliable
