Favourite sitcom characters

Personal favourite is probably Alan Partridge but he has his own super thread. I thought the supporting character and what seemed to be Alan's only real friend Michael, was a great character too.

Another favourite of mine is Al Bundy and his overall general hatred for life. He was The King at delivering insults. Every now and then, he showed a nicer/softer side though!

"I should get a job on the bomb squad... then there will be hope."

"Threats don't work on me... I've already been to hell."

Peg: Al why don’t you have any pictures of me at your work.
Al: cause Peg that would defeat the purpose of going there.

Also David Brent and his complete lack of self awareness. "People see me, and they see the suit, and they go: "you're not fooling anyone", they know I'm rock and roll through and through. But you know that old thing, live fast, die young? Not my way. Live fast, sure, live too bloody fast sometimes, but die young? Die old."

Although Jim is considered the funny one, I really like Barbara Royle with her awful fashion sense and stories about work at the bakery. It seems that she does everything in the house, well unless Anthony gets stung to do it instead :)

Niles Crane, Frasier Crane, Cosmo Kramer and most of the characters in The Simpsons.

David Hyde Pierce and Michael Richards were brilliant at physical comedy and Kelsey Grammer is probably the greatest sitcom actor of all time.

Del Boy. Played brilliantly by David Jason, he's one of the greatest characters in fiction, let alone comedy.

I think everyone knows a real life Del Boy :)

Rodney was very good aswell! I loved his reaction to Del Boy's son, Damien!

Of course Grandad and Uncle Albert but also Trigger was very much a stand out, funny character :)

Phil Dunphy from Modern Family is excellent in a modern Sitcom, and a couple of classic Ronnie Barker characters Arkwright from Open All Hours and Fletcher from Porridge. I'd be happy watching any of those for hours.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Bob Newhart as Bob Hartley in The Bob Newhart show and later as Dick Loudon in Newhart.

    Gary Shandling as Larry Sanders.

The cast of MASH had to pick one out.

    Malcolm Tucker.

And the even more psychotically angry (I know it's hard to believe that's possible) Jamie.

Ross in Friends, so many classic scenes but my favorite would have to be the 'I'm fine' scene where he finds out about Joey and Rachel, 'FINE BY ME! when he breaks up with Rachel', the leather pants scene and the all-time classic, 'PIVOT!' while he's trying to get the couch up the stairs moments. He just plays the part perfectly, never fails to make me laugh even if I've seen the episode 10 times.

Other honorable mentions for me would have to be Red Foreman in That 70's Show and Phil in Modern Family - both play the 'dad' role in very different but equally brilliant ways.

Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory. Think he's hilarious 😂. Also a big fan of Del Boy and Rodney. Ronny Barker in Open All Hours.

Same actor but fairly similar characters too.

Gil Chesterton from frasier was underrated in a role that could be viewed badly now. Maris despite never physically existing was also so well done.
George Costanza & Newman from Seinfeld, Uncle Phil from fresh prince (definitely the glue of that show), Eddie from Grounded for Life, Mark from Peep Show, Robert from Everybody loves Raymond, Dr Cox from Scrubs.

    Trigger.

If it's a girl they're going to name her Sigourney, after the actress. And if it's a boy theyre going to name him Rodney, after Dave.

Dee also & especially Frank. Once Danny DeVito joined it turned an already really good sitcom into a great one.

Every main character is Only Fools and Horses (except Cassandra, she wrecks my head) had moments of brilliance. But David Jason as Del Boy has to be one of the best casting choices ever. Incidentally the lad that played Slater was very nearly cast as Del. He's a good actor but I just can't imagine it working nearly as well as as it eventually did.

Has to be George from Seinfeld, best character in a sitcom ever, Norm and Woody from Cheers close, as is Mark from Peep Show ( if Peep Show is a sitcom?)

The one with "Smitty" was a great episode.

King of Queens and Everybody loves Raymond had some cross over episodes. Frank Barone (Peter Boyle) was the cranky father in "Raymond", and he was in one king of queens episode, but it was a wasted opportunity, they should have had him & Arthur interacting in it but they never met.

I love all of the character in Frasier, I don't think you could have a better five core characters than Niles, Frasier, Marty, Daphne and Roz. I love many of the characters from Parks and Recreation including Ron and Leslie, particularly as they are diametrically opposed in terms of values and beliefs yet are so fond of each other.

A new favourite is the four main characters in You're the Worst, not so much individually but as an ensemble it works so well.

    David Brent
    Brian Potter
    Malcolm Tucker & Jamie
    Super Hans
    Jim Royle

Would happily watch them all night!

Dennis Reynolds, Niles Crane, George Costanza, Darren Lamb, David Brent and some others get honourable mentions but I don't think I've ever consistently laughed at a character as much as this guy:

Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell)- The Office (US). Come to think of it any of the characters from the US version i really enjoyed (except the final seasons without Steve Carell)

*After Chandler is molested when he goes to Joey's 'tailor'*

Joey - That's how they do pants! Tell him Ross.
Ross - Yes....yes it is......IN PRISON!!!!!!!! What's the matter with you!

For me, a great sitcom requires a central character who can play the straight forward every man (or woman) which allows for the crazier characters to feed off. It's not a role which get's all the plaudits from critics or who has the memorable moments for audiences that are used for clip shows but every sitcom needs that central character.

With that in mind, for US sitcoms it has to be Jerry Seinfeld. For this side of the atlantic, it's Dermot Morgan in Father Ted.

as a side kick character Berta in 2 and a half men. Main character Dr Cox in Scrubs (oh yeah and Al Bundy going back to 80's as overall lifetime)

A belief in gender identity involves a level of faith as there is nothing tangible to prove its existence which, as something divorced from the physical body, is similar to the idea of a soul. - Colette Colfer

Yes exactly that's why Seinfeld worked so well.
