Is there a stick insect expert on here?

Just found a 3 inch long one on the doorstep. I didn't even know they existed here. Is it an escapee and should we do something or let it wander off?

Are you sure it's not just a stick?

If I could link one, I would. After telling my wife it wouldn't climb up the doorstep, it moved off...and started climbing the wall...

Not as weird as I thought, they can exist here in the SW...

They don't exist here, if you release it, it will die.

It couldn't of come from far away, ask a few neighbors who have kids if they are missing one.

Other than that you have 2 options, keep it or give it to a pet shop who can rehome it.

They do survive in the wild in South West Ireland.

The greatest trick the stick insect ever pulled was convincing the world it doesn't exist(in Ireland).

In the interests of zoology I stuck a tape measure beside it. 10cm long.

By "it" I mean Sticky, actually not sure that's great either...

The very SW of Ireland grows plants that would not grow elsewhere as it does have a milder climate than the rest of the country.

Aha, bingo. Apparently introduced into West Cork and South Kerry in Australasian trees brought in from Cornwall in the 1960s...

Right. It is possible for somewhere to be both warmer and more humid/wet/precipitous?

I know I know...I lit that sucker and smoked it!

Actually, reported it to the British Phasmid Study Group which keeps a record of sightings.

I don't think I've had a Christmas Eve this exciting in 30 years. Mrs Poindexter was less interested.

It told your wife it wouldn't climb up and she believed it?

Milder doesn't suggest drier in any way.

I have seen many stick insects out in my garden. They just come and sit around on the patio for a few hours then disappear.
