I'm here looking at 5 bottles of red wine that I'm never going to drink.

All gifts from people who know I don't drink wine.

    2002 chateau franc-perat
    2010 casillero del diablo
    2005 cotes du rhone
    2013 la virile capitelle
    2003 chateau des roques vacueyras

It's a tragedy. Beer or Havana club 7 would have been much more acceptable

    First world problems

I like your wine glass. :)

Bring it to the Offy and exchange it.
You could probably get a lot of Dutch Gold for that lot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,043 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

I'll give ya a fiver for the lot (or 20 quid to a charity of your choice!)

I wouldn't trust any off licence that takes in and resells wine when it doesn't know how it has been stored.

OP just them as gifts to people who would enjoy a glass of wine.

    2002 chateau franc-perat……too deceptive
2010 casillero del diablo……tastes like a slapped arse looks
2005 cotes du rhone …… minxy but coarse
2013 la virile capitelle …… too headstrong, naïve & defiant
2003 chateau des roques vacueyras…smooth but indecent

But I’m willing to take them off your hands, as an Xmas favour.

Did they bring them to your house expecting you to open them then and there? A sort of 'gift for you/for me' deal?

Actually if anyone fancies a swap for something white, some beer or Havana 7 I'd probably be up for it. Otherwise I'll end up cooking with it or something

So you really need to drink wine from a wine glass? Does it make a difference or is it just people being pretentious?

Pretending to be more important or knowledgeable than they really are.

How do you know how important or knowledgeable they are?

Apparently the shape does make a difference though. The purpose of the stem is so that you use it to hold the glass without your hand heating the wine. The shape of the glass is also meant to direct the wine to a certain part of your mouth.

    Pro tip

Don't panic if you've run out of wine. Simply tear the box open and squeeze a bit more out of the bag.

Really? I thought the stem was so that if I didn't like the wine at least I could dip my finger in and make the glass whine through resonance.

What statement did I make that suggested what they knew, whoever they are? I don't know. That's why I asked! If a person insisted on a wine glass but it served no real benefit, they would be pretentious.

They could always drink it straight out of the bottle like a respectable individual.

Is that not a shocking waste of good wine? (assuming it IS good wine - have to say I'd be a bit dubious about the ages of some of it, esp the Cassillero del Diablo!)

Thought for cooking purposes the ruffer the wine the better, no?

I'd donate them to an senior citizens home or such like if they are not good enough for you.
Some old people love a small glass of wine, and it's good for the ticker.
You could also use them in cooking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,823 ✭✭✭✭First Up

I'd guess they all fall into the €15 or so price bracket - some maybe a bit dearer. But they are not rubbish and deserve to be drunk.

I'd be slightly nervous of the '02, '03 and '05 bottles as I don't think they are wines of enough quality for 10 - 15 year aging.

Don't you know anyone who would appreciate them, even as a job lot?

A friend of mine would always use whisky to flambe meat. He would use 18 year old Glenfiddich!

What a waste. I'd offer him some cheaper whisky for the cooking, but he always said he could taste the difference.

You shouldn't cook with something you wouldn't drink, or so I've been told.

I don't like any wines so I don't know where that leaves me in the culinary department.

my wife used Jameson 18 for the christmas cake last year and was a little annoyed when she told me but the cake was spectacular.
