True, but, credit to them, they are actually trying to do something worthwhile - do most people now have the English channels? or ahem , streaming? Do they all have access to Racing UK and ATR? (well real horse racing fans do)

I remember a few years ago TG4 did the Dubai races - brilliant feat for that channel. What was good about it though was they also use to occasionally do a magazine programme dedicated to interviews of the connections of the horses due to run. I think they did one episode for last year's Irish Champions Weekend (or was it RTE?) It was good

One thing that I liked about RTE's coverage of the GAA was when they use to do a very good and entertaining magazine programme called Breaking Ball. Anyone remember that? Loads of interviews from players from the past and present and a review of the games at the weekend. Why did they get rid of it.?

Surely, an occasional magazine programme in the style of Breaking ball could be done for horse racing?

I can only assume Gleeson will get a gig (do not mind him so long as he cuts out the McCarrick gimmick) and Tom Lee (who always gets a lot of stick, he is alright)

With itv securing the rights in the UK many Irish people would have no legal way of watching the races

Unless they have either ATR or Racing UK - and not everyone does

I think ,for once, TV3 are doing something right. But, how many Irish viewers still sit down on a Saturday to watch the horses? I am delighted to hear about it anyway - I assume they will just pipe through the ITV coverage (and then I will go meh, and go back to my usual sources lol)

That's it in a nutshell. Also, I Sky+ the racing on C4 on Saturday when I'm in work. Even though on Sky you can add ITV as an additional channel, there is no way to record or pause it. Will be grand having it on TV3.

It will also be on Saorview if its on TV3. Would increase the number of viewers with access to racing. Hopefully it will happen.

Hope it works out well for them. Free Racing on TV is something very positive in that it will showcase racing to a bigger audience.

I hope TV 3 put on a midweek , late night magazine programme, ala Breaking Ball from RTE GAA haydays , during the big Saturday racing, covering the connections etc. Would be great. Fat chance of something like that happening of course, considering Channel 4 never felt the need for it

Brian Gleeson used to present a racing magazine-type programme on TV3 a few years ago, which was entertaining enough. I have a feeling it was funded by HRI. Can't see TV3 doing it off their own bat.

Most likely TV3 will just broadcast ITV coverage so highly unlikely they'll employ any Irish racing personalities themselves.

Exactly, that is what I was referring to earlier (I thought it was TG4 who did that show). I saw one for the 2014 or 2015 Irish Champions Stakes weekend, really enjoyable. Surprised that it was not on RTE. Get Gleeson on the job. Would not cost too much, sending him to Newmarket or Newbury and other main UK training centers or over here in Ireland. He is pleasant and professional and does a decent job getting people to talk to him.

I could be wrong, but Gleeson is part of the ITV team. The magazine programme could be aired on both Irish and ITV channel. Surely someone like Scott Borough would think it is a good idea. Might beat the idea of a similar Morning Line programme ala Channel 4 where it is all about betting . The magazine programme that we were referring to only needs to cover the major festivals like Ascot, Cheltenham, Aintree, Goodwood, York and British Champions Day. HRI should continue to do another set for the Irish channels.

Is there not some Saturday morning programme planned that Oli Bellend is hosting.

TV3 won't be doing anything off their own bat, they'll just show what ITV are showing, the same as they do with Corrie and all the reality muck ITV show.

Btw does Scott Borough = Brough Scott? :D

ye, sorry Brough Scott. You are right , KF

Remains to be seen what Bellend does. Hope it is good though. Even Racing UK use to have Armchair Jockey with Positive Discrimination and busty Lydia Hislop . Decent stuff

Funny enough, surprised Horrible Lydia has not got a gig. If they want women involved she is pretty damn competent

I actually think she is clueless and seems to think she is being clever with a lot of her selections. I'd say she rarely backs a winner.

Just put two plus two together, ITV and TV3 are owned by the same crowd (Liberty Global) which gives an idea of why this has happened now with the move from C4 to ITV.

Good it will be in hd also. I wonder though will TV3 sometimes choose to not air the racing when its on itv?

Saw another tweet last night, don't know how true it is but apparently TV3 do plan on having their own presenters in studio & a magazine show further down the line, I'm glad to be proved wrong if they do. Any guesses as to who they'll employ. Cronin? McLean?

The longer that takes to happen, the better.

For the moment its just the British racing show, handy to access on a HD channel. No big deal but good to know everyone can see it easily if they want now

No law preventing Irish viewers tuning in ITV via Terrestrial TV or Satellite. ITV happens not to be on pay TV EPGs.

must be wrong so! Very surprising.

Not everyone can access through an aerial or have access to a sky dish
And I think on cable you can't have ITV ? It's just UTV Ireland which didn't have the rights to the racing

No law preventing them trying to get a signal or even just getting a satellite dish (doesn't have to be Sky).

But will the racing be on ITV 1HD or ITV 4 HD? If the latter, a subscription will be required.

TV3 HD and UTV Ireland HD are only available on pay TV TV3's 2 HD channels while it's seems the majority the racing will be on 3e which has yet to launch in HD.

Yes only seems to be 50, not every week as will be on ITV1/4.

Not if it clashes with 'I'm a celebrity get me out of here' or any of the other vacuous rubbish they show. TV3's previous forays into sports coverage (GAA, their ongoing champions league coverage etc) do not bode well for how this will go. Unless they're just going to piggyback off the ITV coverage. That would be fine. God forbid they're allowed to have input into it themselves.

For the moment they just plan to take ITV coverage.

Again unless 3e is going HD almost all will be in SD.

Interesting that TV3 are showing the Kempton Christmas meeting, meeting they will be going up against RTE. Probably a few more cases of this.

And I presume they have taken the rights to Cheltenham and Aintree off RTE. IMO this is a good thing as RTE use the Racing UK coverage as opposed to C4. It will be much better camera and audio coverage, although in SD

TV3 now have exclusivity on terrestrial rights in Ireland from January 1st, so RTÉ's and eir's deals end.

I look forward to the complaints about the TV3 player when Cheltenham is on :pac:

For me it's good in general. I only have the regular Saorview channels and rely on my android device for UK TV. RTE don't really bother with flat racing bar the Irish Derby and Champions Stakes, so more Flat Racing on Irish TV is good by me.

Bit of a shocker of a start on their 3e feed?. Just about 1-2 minutes of nothingness from the stands after the intro clip!.
Was it like that on ITV i wonder!?

Production is far too busy at the moment, going from segment to segment to segment with too many hosts/pundits and very little substance and far too much Matt Chapman.
Tipping a non runner doesn't help either.

Early days and having AP is positive

    Jesus, the interactions are cringeworthy!!

The captions are tiny! They just had the pre race odds for the 1.40 on and you would need to stand in front of the tv for a decent reading. And I have good eyesight!

Just look at the caption above the "__ to jump" at the moment! I assume it reads 1.40 Musselborough but what is the point of it if you cant see it properly

Agree. Ive turned over to RUK already. With all the time they had before they came on air(a year or so in advance) runner&riders and results graphics at the very least should be spot on. I really dislike in race graphics but yeah they were tiny. If they really need to do in race graphics them just 3 to jump, 2-1 to jump is all thats needed.
