Brand new route for the Waterford Viking Marathon 2017 (plus half and quarter races) - it's on Saturday 24th June, and will take in Rice Bridge, the Suir Bridge and the Deise Greenway. A very different marathon route from the previous years :)http://www.waterfordvikingmarathon.com

That's a tough enough route Rubyk

It sounds like a nice change from the Tramore Road though imo :D

I'm dreading the two climbs out of Mount Congrieve already!! But the Greenway and bridges will be good!

Yes, the Bridges and Greenway will be a great addition, and will make up for that drag up Mount Congrieve. I'll probably just do the half though - but if I'm feeling well recovered from London, you never know, the full might call.

Lets just hope that they measured it correctly.

Ran the second half of the course last weekend - it is interesting to say the least!! Miles 13 -15 are tough up the old road across from the mart heading up to Gracedieu by the water tower and Roanmore GAA. Greenway and down Summerhill are to follow though so evens out!

The new route is looking tempting. What sort of elevation gain is on the 2017 course?

The second half elevation gain was 460 feet so I would estimate overall around 900ft but also the same in decent but a lot of the downhill will be sharp ie down Summertime. The website has a graph showing the route in terms of altitude gains but it is condensed.

Are the hills really bad? What be compared to in Dublin? Just thinking about it... Thanks!

It will be grand Kabuxa not the fastest course ever but enjoyable nonetheless :P. Generally the pacers are spot on and there will be a bit of banter along the way.

I'm hoping to get to Waterford once or twice before the race for a run on the route. Would I be correct in assuming that there is no pedestrian access across the toll bridge? Parking at carriganore and doing the remainder of the route from there is probably my best option (doing the half)

would be very narrow on the greenway, what sort of numbers will do this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭MacSwifty

    Yes Kabuxa To a Fault!!
There are 200-300 runners over from Wales across the 3 events so that will add to the event further

JonnyF  - The Greenway will be grand as the numbers will be dispersed  by then the the previous marathons were held out and back to Tramore without Road closures. The walkway on the Tramore road was used with out any hassle previously

JulyJane - The Saturday Road Runners and WAC will generally run the half route a couple of times prior to the race so keep an eye out for them on Facebook - The pacers will be there also!

There's Plenty of space on the section of greenway being used to accommodate more double the numbers that will be running on the day!

It certainly is an interesting course, some fast sections, a lot of slow sections and a new finish area in carriganore (same as WAC December half)

Run this Sat morning 15 miles @ 08.00 12 miles @ 08.30 meeting at Harvey Norman Car Park. This run will take in the second half of the marathon route, but will cover a lot of the 1st half by doing so. All welcome, all levels catered for!

Gonna do this as a focus for my "get less fat" training. Just amble along, and stay down there for the night [on my own it seems, so clearly jump in with that bucket of welsh folks!!].

Only running a few times a week these days, and doing that running slowly, but have two 2 1/2 hour runs done - so will get around at least :-)

Is there a profile view for the half anywhere?, I found the Limerick one quite helpful when planning pace a few weeks back.

    Hi SC
Profile is in following link. Some of the course is covered twice so at mile 7.5 and 20 you will exit of the Greenway back on to the Waterford - Kilmeaden road, This little bugger is a real pipe opener especially the second time round. Just after mile 12 as the halfers head for home there is a good tough drag of over a mile up by the new Roanmore GAA pitches, but there is swift payback downhill via Summerhill. There are few drags early on heading out Sallypark to the new bridge.
    Hope this is of benefit
    MacSwifty
Opps sorry disregard most of the above. The profile for the half is identical to mile 12. From 12 it downhill and flat and you can take it as the last mile of the full. There is potentially an up hill finish depending on the position of the finishing line in WIT Carriganore

Thanks for that MacSwifty, looks a lot more hilly than Limerick with a potentially tough finish, will definitely hold something back for the last few miles.

Going to give this another chance this year, I'm in for the half and just copped how close it actually is:eek: Hope it's a good one.

This is my first time doing a half (previously only done up to 10k). I live about 30 minutes away so I'll probably leave the house around 7.30 to get parked and down to the start line.

When should I eat breakfast and what is the best thing to have, can anyone advise? And what's good to have the day/night before?

Anyone receive their bib's yet if registering by post, haven't received mine here and was wondering if they have started posting out yet?

Everyone enjoy some kinda long[ish] run in the crazy heat over the weekend :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 437 ✭✭dintbo

Yup. Although enjoy and long are not really the right words. Went out to do 12 but realised at 8 that it needed to be cut short. Manages just under 10 and I was wrecked. And that was at 8 in the morning! Roll on Saturday!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭julyjane

I did 12 on Thursday just before the mercury rose so that's my last long one down. Haven't got out since due to circumstances beyond my control but I'll try and do 3 or 4 miles this evening if I get the chance. 3 children and a spouse who works mainly evenings and weekends don't make it easy, as it is I'm having to farm them out to relatives for the weekend just so I can turn up on Saturday morning but I'll have the weekend and the house to myself then so a nice relaxing recovery is in store.

Really looking forward to it now

Anyone know what the frequency of the shuttle busses is likely to be from the finish line back to the retail park ?

Are there shuttle buses afterwards? I had envisaged myself walking from carriganore to Harvey Norman, when driving it doesn't seem far at all and will be facing people who are still running.

It'll be great if there are shuttle buses, they had a lot of info on Facebook earlier and were very responsive to comments

    .

Its 4k from the stadium to the retail park according to google maps if I'm looking at the right places, pretty far after a half (or full) race on tired legs. I could be looking a the wrong place - am not familiar with the area, if its only 1 or 2k that would be great!

I'd say it's about 4k from the RSC that's where the finish was last year. I'll be in WIT tomorrow collecting my number so I'll see then but if you're on Facebook check out their page they put up an aerial photo today showing where the car park is

Aha, thanks for that, its only about a km or even less looking at that, grand stuff, perfect, thanks very much!

From WIT Carriganore to Retail Park is a little more than a half a mile so no need for Shuttle bus. A nice walk to loosen out the limbs:D

Entry available if anyone is looking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,090 ✭✭✭julyjane

I'm getting way ahead of myself here but what are the arrangements for driving out of butlerstown retail park after the race if the roads are still closed? I'm hoping to do the half in about 2.20 so if I'm back at the car by 12, turning left out of the retail park will the cork road be closed to traffic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,008 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

Is the finishing line in the RSC or WIT for the full?

WIT is the finish for all the races. The arena in carrignore not the main college on the cork road.

Great race!, thanks to the organisers. Found it quite undulating course, a bit tougher than the Limerick one a few weeks ago, with a particularly tough climb between mile 7 and 8, many were reduced to walking. Set a PB all the same for the half (1:41:50) so happy enough. Will enjoy a few cold beers tonight :)

Well done supercell! I found the course tough as well, seemed to drag all the way up to 9 miles with that country road at 7 being the toughest, gritting teeth going up there. Wouldn't let that turn me off coming back again though. The organisation was spot on today and all is forgiven for me anyway. A big thank you to the 1.30 pacers as well especially the guy who kept dropping back when I fell off pace a few times throughout the race and even slowed the main bunch down to get me back in. I got to within 10 metres but just couldn't bridge the final gap at 10 miles. Didn't manage the 1.30 but he pulled me a lot farther than I would've otherwise made it.

I grinded to a halt over the last 5k and finished in 1.33.02. Big fade but off of just easy mileage. My muscles probably weren't ready for an all out half, good starting point though and no doubt it stood to me.
