With all the county plate snobbery out there does your cars plate match the county you live in? Thought a poll would be interesting.

This is genuinely the first I've heard of this.

You should get out more, this has been around since 1987.

I've never got where it's coming from nor what plates are the ones to have... couldn't care less in fairness.

However I bought a used W reg car in Dublin for less than the exact same car with more mileage that had a D reg, I was so stunned at the time I thought there was something mechanically wrong with the car, but no it was 200 euros cheaper than the other one simply because the dealer knew he couldn't shift it as quickly as the other.... and that's on a 1500 (or thereabouts) euros piece of metal.

Anyway that very car still serves the missus well, 3 years later.

Yes it does actually even though I bought the car off a lad in Dublin.

I think the non-Dublin reg can let me get away with doing cheeky lane changes in around town.

Bought a second hand d reg in Dublin. At the time, the other contender was a c reg. Plate letter didn't factor into the price or choice.

It's always existed; at one time Tipperary was the most expensive plate.

My TF looks to be Glasgow - took a bit of digging to find that.
I live the opposite end of the Island so, no not the same county.

Also had a raised eyebrow at the reason for getting rid of SN07
In 2007 the Edinburgh DVLA office exceptionally issued TN07 prefixed registrations for some vehicles, instead of the expected 'SN07'. This was stated to be because of potential offence caused by interpreting SN07 as 'snot'.[21] This is the first known use of the 'T' code as the first letter, as it was not allocated to a region in the 2001 system. Also, TF07, TH07 and TJ07 registrations have been issued in Glasgow, most probably because the SA07–SJ07 allocations were exhausted. Similarly, along with TN07, TK07 has also been issued by Edinburgh, probably for the same oversubscription reason as in Glasgow.

As for county plate snobbery, it certainly does exist! Have heard of people in Kilkenny refusing to buy a car with Waterford plates, and have heard many many people saying they wouldn't buy a car with a D plate, "as the clutch will be nearly burned out in it"

Yes, L reg living in Limerick but that's down to it being an import and I am the first registered Irish owner. In the past I've owned cars with C, CE, TN, TS, WX, D, LK, etc regs so for the most part it makes feck all difference to me.

Feck... try having a KY plate in Cork! I had a D plate in Cork...

I live in Dublin and so far I've only had MH, MO and C plates :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,797 ✭✭✭✭For Forks Sake

Yes purely due to having imported it. I've had various regs previous last one having been C. I've no bias against any plate bar MO, I refuse to be associated with them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,186 ✭✭✭boardsuser1

Most of my 20 odd cars have been C reg'd.

Have also had D,L,LS,MO,TN,G, & a KK registered Bike.

Living in Meath, daily drive a C reg car because I'm a cun....ning individual who bought a cracking car not based on it's reg :D the rarely driven classic (??!!!) car is also a C reg

To balance things out I have a 95 MH taxi/farm spec Merc and 76 MH tractor

This gets me thinking me thinking about how dealers get customers living outside the pale to register new high end cars as ' D' reg . I wonder what they say to customer - if you get it ' d ' reg. I will have no trouble selling it on when you trade in again and will give you better trade in ??

think they are just trying to make there job easier .

I never heard of it either.
I think we should stay in more if this is what's outside.

Which are the more desirable county plates? I never even imagined this could be a thing but it might mean being able to squeeze a few extra bob from the credulous, so it's worth knowing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,528 ✭✭✭✭Alun

I live in Wicklow and by virtue of just having bought my first new car, have the first WW plate now in 15 years of living here, always D before that. Not surprising in any of the counties bordering on Dublin given the sheer volume of D reg cars on the second-hand market in the area though.

Having said that, the dealer did offer a D reg 'option' when I bought it. Probably easy for them to do as despite them being in Bray, they're in the small part of it that is in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, so presumably they'd just register it in their name first and then transfer it to me.

From Westmeath but live in Dublin, have only ever had D reg cars.

Imported the current one and floated the idea of putting a WH reg on it, but was shot down by the wife (a Dub) :)

I have IIG which in the north is Fermanagh. Makes no odds as most people here haven't a clue what the codes are

Driving a W reg but living in cork.

Before that bought a car in Tipp Town that was a C reg and the salesman asked was it a factor in buying the car i said no just saw and liked the car reg was not important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 451 ✭✭bd2012

Yup, but the same as others here, its a UK import.

D reg, I live in Tipp.

The only time I have ever had a TN reg is when I imported them myself ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

    Carlow with a D reg.

    Facts about county reg plates:

DL - shíte druv out of it, likely an ex rally car.
D - Little wear and tear, probably genuine low miler, clutch will DEFINITELY explode as you drive home from the seller's place.

The only reg plate I wouldn't like is KY. It would only drive home how much we are shafted.

Black and amber county and I've had LK, D and currently on LS plates but the wheels are black and her colour is amberish. ;)

Bought a few new cars when living outside where I'm from, all had a Cork reg as I used the home address. All of them were rarely in Cork. Back living in Cork now and the car is only there 2 or maybe 3 days a week as I work in Dublin.

The county reg isn't really accurate a lot of the time. It wouldn't put me off a car in the least as long as I was happy with the condition/history/spec but given a choice I'd reg it wherever I'd realistically be selling it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,280 ✭✭✭✭Autosport

My first car was a WX reg but all the others have been KK reg's. I wouldn't buy a car if it had any other county reg on it. Definitely wouldnt drive a T or a WD reg car. So yeah I'm a county snob :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,969 ✭✭✭✭alchemist33

Living in DL with a DL car. Even though I'm a blow-in here, it would feel odd to have a different county reg, as if I'm pretending to live somewhere else. If I had to choose between two cars with all else being equal, I'd definitely go for the one with the reg of the county I live in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭rizzodun

Living in Sligo, one car is MH, the other is SO, which is the first and only SO car I've owned out of 6 cars.

Used to have a DL reg civic, and call me paranoid but whenever I headed further north than Donegal town I used to get odd looks, perhaps it was because it wasn't a northern reg car, but I'm convinced they can smell anyone not local up there, like I was some sort of spy....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,219 ✭✭✭pablo128

Living in Dublin, mine and her cars are both d reg but both UK imports.

I'll be bringing a car down from the north next year for herself, but I might register it in Wexford purely so it doesn't have the poxy 12**** reg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,845 ✭✭✭Noccy_Mondy

Live in Mayo, both cars are MO reg's, but both were imported. Must get the Irish MO plates onto one of the cars at the weekend!
